Chapter 16: Companion

"I would like to take Hye-eun, the hotel receptionist, with me."

*

"Why would you want to do that?"

"She is useful, and I think having a North Korean citizen working under me would be good for your country's morale."

Sung-ho was trying to appeal to Kim's emotions. He knew that if Kim told his people that North Korea would be supporting him constantly, then the citizens of North Korea would have higher morale and respect for both parties.

"You are correct. But I have one condition!"

"What is it?"

"She must work under you until you retire as a raider.!"

Sung-ho was okay with the agreement but still needed to talk with Hye-eun about it.

"Can I speak with her for a while first?"

Kim Jong-un nods his head and Sung-ho gets up from his seat and walks away.

**

Hye-eun was waiting for him outside the capitol building.

"How did it go!?"

"He has one condition, you have to work under me until I retire."

Hye-eun is elated about the idea of going to South Korea. She is also ecstatic to already have a job lined up for herself, once she arrives.

**

"She accepts the conditions you mentioned."

"Excellent!"

Sung-ho and Kim Jong-un had come to a mutual agreement. A North Korean citizen was now the first and only employee working under Sung-ho.

*Knock*

*Knock*

*Knock*

"Excuse my interruption, my great and merciful leader!"

A shaky voice is pleading to Kim Jong-un.

"What is it?"

"Mr. Sung-ho's ride has arrived at the DMZ!"

Kim stands up from his seat and stretches his hand towards Sung-ho.

"It seems I must wish you goodbye..."

****

*Vroom*

*Click*

*Slam*

Sung-ho steps out of the car, slamming the door behind him.

The drive back to Seoul wasn't as long as he thought it would be. He slept the entire ride to North Korea because he was tired, but this time he was completely awake.

Sung-ho and Hye-eun were driven to the Blue House, to meet the President.

**

"Thank you for coming, Mr. Sung-ho. Who is that girl with you?"

Sung-ho motions his hand to Hye-eun, telling her to speak.

"I'm Hye-eun. I woke for Mr. Sung-ho, as of now."

The President looks 0ver at Sung-ho.

"She works for you?"

"I pleaded with Kim Jong-un to let her leave North Korea and come here, his only rule was that she had to work for me."

"So you want me to give her citizenship and keep her origins hidden?"

Sung-ho nods to the President. A sigh of relief escapes his mouth.

"Please."

The President nods as he reaches into his desk drawer and pulls out a binder full of papers. The binder is black and unmarked.

*Shick*

*Click*

"This binder holds the affairs of raiders who go to North Korea from South Korea."

The binder has very little pages in it.

"As you can probably see, it's relatively empty compared to other files you might find. There have only been three of our raiders that have gone to North Korea. You, Tae Min-seok, and Tae Woo-bin, his sister."

The President opens the binder and reaches into his pocket to retrieve a pen.

"First things first, were you attacked in any way?"

"No."

Sung-ho chose to lie, he didn't want to let the President know about him being attacked by other raiders, he was lazy and didn't want to have to do anything more.

"Were you treated fairly, given adequate food and shelter?"

"Yes. I was fine."

"Were you-"

"Can we just end this please! I want to go home."

The President was caught off guard by the abruptness of his words. He didn't expect to be treated so rudely.

"Ah- eh- S-sure!"

The President's voice was shaking from nervousness. He didn't want to anger Sung-ho by saying something he wouldn't like.

"You can go but I need to speak with your comrade in private."

Sung-ho gets up from his seat and stops next to the door before exiting.

"Meet me outside."

*

Sung-ho left the room, leaving Hye-eun and the President alone.

"Why are you working under him? Are you trying to spy for North Korea!?"

"No! I would never do such a thing!"

The President adjusts his posture to create a more sinister aura.

"If your goal is to harm my country's citizens or to gather information for your country, I suggest leaving now!"

"Heuk!"

"Because if I catch you, I can promise you, you'll wish you were dead! Do you understand me!?"

Hye-eun's fright knows no bounds. She has never felt fear like this before. The President was an awakened, granted he wasn't strong, only being a D Rank, but he could still release killing intent.

"I understand!"

She spoke in a trembling voice, shaking out of the fright.

***

"Are you sure this is okay, Mr. Sung-ho?"

Sung-ho brought Hye-eun back to his home.

"Until you can get your own place... you're staying here."

*Knock*

*Knock*

*Knock*

"Coming!"

Ha-yeon answers the door with a smile.

"Hi oppa!"

She embraces Sung-ho with a tight hug.

"I'm back."

"Mom! Oppa's back!"

The sounds of stomping and creaking stairs echoes throughout the house.

"Hey mom!"

She leaps towards him and embraces him in a comforting hug. She looks behind him to see Hye-eun.

"Ahh! Who's that!"

Sung-ho frees himself from his mom and sister's clutches and motions to Hye-eun with the plan of his hand.

"This is Hye-eun. She works for me now."

Ha-yeon walks past her brother and stands right in front of Hye-eun.

She looked over her, inspecting her like she was trying to read her mind.

"Hmmmm..."

She starts to rub her chin.

"Okay! Hello, I'm Ha-yeon!"

Hye-eun feels a weight lift off her chest. She was relieved to not be yelled at.

She introduces herself to Ha-yeon and Chae-yun.

She is welcomed inside where the story of North Korea is told.
