Chapter 2: Enough Blood For Everyone

Morana

I arrived at our cabin in the woods, and I open my eyes to see the lights are on inside. Ms. Brinham must have started dinner for us. The smell lingered in the air, and now that I fed, I could once again stomach regular food.

I feel the remnants of the human's life fade from my eyes. Her soul finally manifests in front of me, then fades, and I turn to Uncle Wes. "You are my favorite uncle now." Ms. Brinham cooked my favorite mermaid tale soup. It was a delicacy that most couldn't afford.

It was rare because most mermaids take at least fifteen years to shed their tails. So only a select few got the chance to taste it. I had it every other Tuesday, all thanks to Serene. She was our supplier.

Uncle Wes snorts at my comment and pats my back. Instinctively my fangs lengthen even though I know he isn't a threat. He moves ahead of me towards the door, ready to greet his wife.

"Please, I am your only uncle." Yes, he was, even if he wasn't my biological uncle. I follow him inside the warm cabin, ready to eat.

"Honey, please set the tables." Ms. Brimham's husky voice rang throughout the living room. I make my way pass Uncle Wes when I hear someone clearing their throat.

"Ana, what did we tell you?" I knew werewolves couldn't be trusted.

"He told you, didn't he?" I knew the answer but still. "I know, I know, but the fresher kills are always better." They didn't say it, but I sometimes knew my lack of empathy concerned them. I couldn't help it, though. It was not in my nature to be empathetic. If there was fresh meat, I wanted to eat it. Simple.

"If you want to go to school, you need to control your impulses. We won't be there to stop you when you lose control."

Here we go again. My fangs are itching to come out due to my mild annoyance. However, I know if I claw at Maria again, it'll prove her point.

"I get it, more control," I say this with a slight smirk since I am thinking of how her blood would taste.

"Stop it." With that, she went back to the kitchen. I hated that she knew me so well.

I managed to reach my room on the third floor without being stopped again. The decoy I made was removed from the tangle of sheets and thrown out on the floor. I honestly thought they would glance in and leave, but of course, they didn't.

I pick up the decoy made of wood and coarse fabric and read a post-it note attached to the front.

Nice Try, clean up your room when you get back.

It was a nice try, too bad I couldn't get another kill before I came back home. If I ate again, I would have been full for another six months. The human essence was not mandatory, but if I didn't get some every once in a while, I became even less empathetic, and I try to kill those around me.

It is that way until I either get a mate or turn two hundred. Whichever comes first, I want to enjoy the bloodlust till then. There was nothing quite like the bloodlust.

With quickened speed, I clean my room then head downstairs, sitting in my seat. My cutlery is already in my hand, and I am reaching for the soup.

Ms. Brinham and Uncle Wes slightly sway with how fast I was going but are otherwise unfazed. Before the spoonful reaches my lips, I am stopped by Ms. Brinham with the words Grace.

We all close our eyes, and I begin.

"Dear Gods and Goddess, bless this food. Also if you can send another unsuspecting human my way after this that would be-"

"Dig in!" The couple cuts me off before I finish, and we enjoy the meal.

Dinner was over, and I was preparing to go to bed. The day was short, but I didn't mind. In our realm, the days were shorter. The night was what I lived for anyways.

I settle in bed and listen to the bustling couple on the second floor, get ready for bed. I didn't need as much sleep as the couple. The couple knew this and always worried about what I am doing when night came.

They knew they could only do so much to keep me in check. I no longer hear the shuffling, and the couple's breathing started to even out shortly after. I decided to wait another five minutes to make sure they are asleep.

After their breathing is slowed and consistent, I rise from the bed staring into the dark. I loved going on nightly strolls to see what I could find.

I quickly made my way through the window and jumped down, landing gracefully. The thick blood-red pine trees surrounded me, and the various sounds of little creatures echo throughout the night, creating a beautiful yet eery atmosphere.

The glow of the weeper bushes enhances the crimson leaves of the pine trees as I make my way down the winding path disappearing into the forest.

I lived in the supernatural realm, and the cabin was on the edge of two worlds: the Human World and Chaos kingdom, the home of all things paranormal. Fledglings like myself usually can't go between the two worlds easily hence the reason why Uncle Wes moved out here.

Although he wasn't my real uncle, I still liked the guy. He and his wife were the only two people I didn't want to kill all the time. The only other exception was Serene, but she barely visited me.

She wasn't allowed on land often until she was ready to go to school. I was going to be seeing more of her in the upcoming months, so I wasn't bothered. She and her two sisters were getting ready for school, so it occupied her time.

Anyways, Uncle Wes found me on the edge of the two worlds with a black card from Death himself.

Find Her a Home; her name is Morana Atheirios.

I didn't mind where my birthplace was. I hated people anyway, so I wasn't killing anyone to get answers about my parents anytime soon.

I almost stop as I hear light footsteps approaching me. I smile widely at the thought of new prey. All I wanted to do was visit Serene at the Mermaid Opening, but hey, free food.

As the person picks up speed, I pick up their heartbeat. I lick my bottom lip at how fast it is pounding. The sound of a knife drawn reaches my ears. I now know this person is here to kill me.

I wonder who wanted me dead. Other than the three people mentioned, I don't know anyone else, so the answer was clear.

It's for the little scooter I stole ten years ago, along with the kid who rode it.

Ah, Memories. He was a cute kid.

In my defense, the kid was supposed to die by a dump truck.

Just as I feel the person's presence, I ducked as they slide past, then turned right on time to grab their thigh. I sink my claws into the meaty leg, and a yell could be heard loud and clear.

Getting a bit too excited, I let out a sound of delight at its pain as blood gushes down my hand. It was a woman.

Another yelp escapes the prey's mouth, and I shiver, sinking my other hand into the other thigh. I let instinct take over as I slither my hands up the thing's legs and then grip its waist.

"What do we have here?" My voice now had a raw edge to it, and it became a haunting whisper, echoing throughout the forest.

The woman I had my grip on struggled, but it was futile. I stand to my full height and turn the thing around. I lick my lips in anticipation of the kill.

I was now facing a woman. She looked at me in fright, and I wondered how I was going to kill her. I smiled at the woman as I say my next words.

"Why are you wandering into my forest? From the looks of it, you are a Chimon. From my knowledge, your species are assassins." the smile slips from my faces as a more sinister, murderous smile takes place. "Pray tell, why is an assassin here for me?"

I did not try another supernatural creature before. Since I am not in school yet, rules do not apply.

The woman before me stiffened, most likely from the shock of being exposed.

Bah!

She was not a fun one.

"You are an abomination. You were never supposed to be born. You can't take the throne."

Throne? Did she mean the toilet? Because no one goes in after Uncle Wes finishes.

I purse my lips at the chit since I don't know what nonsense she was spouting.

"I don't know about this whole throne business, but I do know I have never tasted another supernatural creature. I hear the plus side about eating one of you guys is that you don't have a soul."

The woman quivered before me, and I just couldn't help my self. I licked her face then scraped it with my fangs.

"You know what they say, easy digestion with no soul to question."

Bon Appetit.

Let's just say, when wrapped up, there was enough blood for everyone.
