Chapter 1: Here she is at last
[RECAP]
Mia arrives at a camp ready to take her place as Queen Bee, but she's challenged by mysterious new arrival Amber. Their instant rivalry causes tension and things take a sinister turn.
MIDGE'S POV
Here they are, on their way to what they call holiday of a lifetime. Spend one summer on Peregrine Island, make memories that will stay with you forever. I've seen this girl before, we all have, right? There's always one like her, the star that has to shine the brightest. And now the queen surveys her subjects looking out for this year's holiday diamonds. And deciding who gets the honor of being her summer BFF. She's Mia, last Summer's Queen Bee.

"I don't have any signal either." Kayleigh approaches Mia clad in shades who has her cell phone raised in the air probably looking for a signal.
"And lemme guess, no WIFI in this island." She rolls her eyes and takes off her shades.
"I don't think so, even though it's like a human right or something." Kayleigh shrugs her shoulders.
"Perfect." Mia mutters
Kayleigh pries on Mia's magnificent style of dressing and notices her white boots and marvelling, she says, " I like your boots, I have the same ones."
"Not quite." Mia squints her eyes.
"My mum said they're perfect for running around an Island and I said, I might not be able to run but at least I'll look good while standing still." She smiles broadly while shaking her shoulders. "I'm Kayleigh." She waves her hand excitedly.
"Mia." She responds putting back her shades. Kayleigh walks to her luggage and Mia turns around to peek at the hot guys who are among them. She takes several shots of them as one named Dev spots her. The group of teens move with their luggage from the bridge as Dave and Mags, the Camp counselors show up.
"Welcome to Peregrine Island." Comes Dave's deep voice.
"Welcome Danny, welcome guys, welcome..." Mags checks out on everyone as they follow Dave.
"You should have carried a backpack." Mags says to Mia who has a hard time wheeling her suitcase on the rocky grass.
"I don't carry things." She complains and so she's left behind. She looks up to the hill and sees a dark silhouette but then looking up again, nothing seems to be there.
Dave leads the teens to the camp and having arrived, he says, "Hello guys! Home is here, don't worry, you'll get used to it." He laughs.
"Here we are, base camps, sweet base camps." He jested as he instructed all the girls to follow Mags. He further gives directions to shower blocks, toilets and the mess.
Kayleigh is excited to be with Mia in the same cabin and so she runs towards her to inform her of the same.
"We're in the same cabin."
"OMG slumber party." She picks up her luggage and goes to their cabin.
"That's my bank." Mia tells Alex, one girl in a bobble hat.
"Our bank." Kayleigh gangs up with her. The girl removes her luggage and moves to another bank. Kayleigh climbs up to the upper bed and is mesmerized to see a beautiful view through the window.
"I hope this place is not infested. I'm gonna have to put my hair up so that it doesn't get bugs in it." Mia mutters.
"What! I never wear my hair up. I brush it hundred times ever night and every morning. That should be okay, right?" Kayleigh asks her.
"Yeah." Mia responds as Mags comes in.
"Shake you leg kiddos, dump your bags, it's game time." She said excitedly.
"Shake your leg, who talks like that?" Mia wonders and they left the Cabin.
Right outside the Camp, the teens makes a circle as Dave gets to the centre of it.
"The objective of this game is to get to know each other. You say something by yourself and then throw the bag to the next person. I'll start. I'm Dave and I invented this game."
"I'm Mags and this is my first summer on Peregrine Island."
"I'm Kayleigh and I have biscuits." She smiles fondly and a guy named Zac notices her.
"Mia, and I hate this game!" She says sternly throwing the bag to Dev.
"I'm Dev and you'll have to be quick to catch the bag." He says throwing the bag to Alex, a loner.
"Alex, and I don't know I dropped it and now I'm out." She drops the bag and leaves. Dev picks it up and aims it at a black guy by the name Brendan.
"I'm Brendan and I can punch a person a hundred kilos." He then gives the small bag to Zac, his best friend.
"I'm Zac, me and Brendan go to the same gym." He says jokingly and passes the bag to a guy in glasses by the name Harry who lets it fall down on his feet.
"I'm Harry and I hurt my hand closing my suitcase." He mutters softly and being the last guy, the others begin playing with it while throwing it to one another.
Mia tries her luck with Dev who has eyes on her.
"I used to live in Tokyo." She says.
"I really like SuChi." Dev catches the bag.
"Seattle. I learned a lot while I was there so watch out how I throw this one...."
Mia throws the yellow sponge and a white blonde catches it.
"I'm Amber and I missed the first ferry. Sorry. She says confidently and throws the sponge deliberately on the sand. Everything about her seems quite unusual and the first person she stares at so hard is Mia.
"Welcome Amber, you're just in time for Dinner." Dave ends the game urging everyone to make their way to the canteen.

MIDGE'S POV
Here she is at last, Amber, the golden girl. She's been looking forward to this and now, it begins.

"That's right, stay in your lane. Have seen it before. Done it before. A big entrance so that everybody notices you. That girl is gonna be drama." Mia feels threatened by Amber, the last lass to arrives in the camp. She peeks at her intently while in company of Kayleigh.
Getting back to their Cabin, Kayleigh and Mia find Amber on their bank.
"What are you doing in my bank?" Mia glares at the golden girl sitting comfortably on her bed.
"Oh, was this yours? I moved your case because I prefer sleeping by the window. The bed I've moved you to is much less drafty." Amber brags.
"I don't want the other bank, I want my one." Mia complains and she chuckles.
"It's just a bed. What difference does it make? They are all the same."
"Whatever, you're gonna cry about it. Just take it." Mia hisses and leaves her feeling greatly conflicted and intimidated by her.
At night, Mia turns and tosses on the bed without getting proper sleep. She opens her eyes and sees Amber sitting on her knees while facing the window.
At dawn, Dave rings the morning alarm and everyone wakes up. Mia bumps her head on the wood and Amber looks down at her and mutters, ' Morning?" Mia grumbles.
The group gathers for their morning activity as per instructed by the camp counselors. Their first activity was to explore the Peregrine Island with two flags and so they split into two teams competing to hunt each other's flags down. Whoever caught the opponent's flag was to bring it back to the camp and place it on a flag post so as to be declared the winner.
As expected, the two leaders to lead the two teams are Mia and Amber. Amber is asked to pick her partner and surprisingly, she picks Dev who Mia has eyes on. Mia ends up picking Kayleigh who dares to bring Amber's team down.
Mia and her team saunter to a big fallen tree and she slouches lazily on the broad stem while holding their flag.
"What about getting to the hills with the flag Captain?" Brendan asks her.
"Do whatever you want. I'm gonna lie on the sun till this stupid game is over." She says.
Suddenly, Dev shows up and Brendan shouts out, 'Intruder!'
"I just came to say hi, I'm not trying to catch your flag." He surrenders.
"Because, you captured something much better anyway, an invitation to my party tonight." Mia sits up straight when Dev appears.
"What party?" Kayleigh asks.
"It's picnic in the woods but don't tell anyone. It's very exclusive." She adds.
"That's okay, so am I." Dev smiles fondly at her as she blushes hard. "I better get back. I'm not supposed to hang with the 'enemy'.
"I won't tell Amber if you don't." Mia promises as she watches him leave.
"I can come to the party too, right? Can I invite Zac?" Kayleigh asks her.
"I guess. Which means Brendan too. Tell him to keep quiet, secret to a good party isn't who gets invited, it's who doesn't."
"We got the flag!" Brendan comes back with Amber team's flag which forces them to run after her for their flag.
Amber and Mia compete to get to the finishing line by crossing a net bridge. Mia gets there first while Amber gets stuck midway.
"Help me!" She cries out.
"Mia! Save her!" The teams urge her. Mia reaches out her hand to help her out and in the struggle, Amber lets go and plunges into the river.
"Oh my god." Amber whimpers as she tries to get up.
"Mia! Apologize right now!" Dave gets angry and so does everyone. They think it's Mia's fault that Amber ended up falling into the river.
"I didn't do anything. Tell them it wasn't my fault." Mia runs to Amber.
"I'm sorry it was an accident." Amber says.
''You let go," Mia insists.
"It's not always about winning, Mia." Mags gets disappointed.
"Lets get you warm." Dave takes Amber away and the rest also leave while murmuring about the whole incident feeling sorry for the blonde.
Mia walks back to the camp and everyone stares at her including Alex.
"What are you looking at?" She reprimands her as she strides back to the cabin where she finds Amber and Kayleigh chitchatting happily.
"You're on her bed as well as now?" Mia wonders.
"My shampoo leaked all of my stuff. Mags told me you can lend me one of your outfits.You know, as a gesture." Amber informs the latter.
"Fine!" She agrees at impulse and ransacks her suitcase.
"Here, it's all have got to spare." She hands her a white jamsuit.
"Thanks. Don't worry, I can pull this off." She says and walks out after soiling Mia's sheets.
"Mia, I'm totally on your side but Amber seems really cool and when you're mean to her kinda seems like you ignore her." Kayleigh sighs deeply and walks out leaving Mia completely stunned.
"Sorry about what happened earlier." Brendan sympathizes with Amber who comes to their table during lunchtime.
"Amber, I wanted to let you know me and some of the others are having a thing after lights out. Picnic in the woods, it's kind of a secret but I want to invite you." Mia approaches Amber.
"Why? So you can push her in the woods again." Brendan resents Mia.
"Sorry? Who asked you?" Mia questions him.
"And where's Kayleigh?" She asks.
"I don't know. Where are you gonna find her 'cause her seat is taken." Amber responds.
"You know what, forget it. Party officially cancelled." Mia resolves to leave since no one cares about her party.
Later in the evening as Mia gets out of the shower, she finds Kayleigh cutting her long hair short in the mirror.
"Kayleigh, what are you doing?"
"I'm cutting my hair." She mutters.
"We have been talking about her trying a new style, it's gonna look amazing." Amber appears behind Kayleigh.
"Talking when? Kayleigh you love your hair. What happened to your one hundred brushes?"
"It's not your hair. Kayleigh can do whatever she likes with it. See, beautiful." Amber rolls her eyes at Mia who pops her eyes in disbelief. Kayleigh then follows Amber out of the shower block.
Mia returns back to the cabin fully dressed in pajamas and finds Alex the loner studying astronomy.
"Where's everyone?" She asks her.
"I don't know. There are probably at a top secret party the rest of us aren't supposed to know. The one you organized." Alex gives her view.
"I cancelled that one."
"And so? To some it's uncanceled."
"They can't do that."
"Apparently they can. See you're a social outcast now, do you wanna have a look?"
"Do you think I'm gonna sit here and watch some flying rocks while everyone else is at the party?"
"You were not invited.''
"I don't need an invitation. It's my party." Mia walks out of the cabin and runs deep into the woods. She sees everyone having a moment of their life and decides to confront Amber.
"What is this!"
"Hey Mia, do you wanna join?"
"You think I don't see what you're doing."
"Testing marshmallows?"
"Are you in pajamas?" Kayleigh laughs.
"Yes I'm in pajamas because someone stole my idea of a party and made it her own party and then she didn't even invite me."
"Mia, it's not my party just a bunch of friends hanging out." Amber corrects her.
"Stop pretending, you're having your way with people. You made Kayleigh cut her own hair."
"Kayleigh has a mind of her own."
"Yeah! I have a mind of my own."
"I'm sorry no one told you about tonight." Dev comes to Amber's rescue.
"Please, it wasn't accidental." She moves closer to Kayleigh. "You are totally on my side, you just forgot to mention it. Amber planned this."
"Mia, it's okay. If you way to join us, we'll be happy to have you." Amber offers.
"You'll be better if you go and lie down first." Kayleigh comes forward and mocks her. "You're acting kind of luppy." She whispers and turns away from her. Mia feeling dejected, walks further ahead to a cliff.

MIDGE'S POV
Ever seen to queen bees in the same hive? Me neither. On Peregrine Island, there's only ever room for one queen.

"Mia!" Amber calls out for her.
"Leave me alone."
"It's beautiful out here, isn't it?"
"So you're following me now?"
"Maybe I want to be friends."
"It's just the two of us Amber, you can drop the hymes of sweet act."
"You really don't like me, do you? You're not good at this. You'll never win if you let the other person see how weak you are."
"I'm not weak."
"I can prove it." Amber nears the edge of the cliff.
"Amber stop! This isn't funny, it's dangerous."
"This is the difference between you and me. Even when I'm on the edge, I'm not scared, you are."
"Stop it! I'm not afraid of you okay! Fall off the cliff and see if I care." She challenges her and so she falls.
"Amber!! Help!!" She runs back to the rest. "Help! It's Amber, we were just talking and then she fell off the cliff."
"You're not making sense." Dev responds.
"We have to get her. Amber jumped off the cliff."
"Amber did what?"
Mia turns to see Amber who appears perfectly fine.
"Are you okay? You don't seem like you have seen a ghost."
Mia dilates her pupils in a split second while trying to decipher how Amber is still alive after jumping off the cliff.
