Chapter 26: A Dhampyr

DR. EVELYN wanted to rush to the Gregory Estate once she received the command. She was always afraid of the callings from the estate because her precious people lived there. But her clinic was busy as always, and she only could leave for the estate as soon after her last patient went home. It was hectic. Working as a doctor was difficult. It was both demanding and tiring, but Evelyn was proud of her profession. She could save and help people in need. She was the only doctor available in this town, anyway. Evelyn wanted to go to the second manor by horse. However, the sudden, incessant rain forced her to take a carriage instead. She reached the estate later at night.

As the dark clouds covered the moon, Evelyn could see a streak of lightning flashed across the dark sky. It was so clear. And she overheard the thunder rumbled in the distance. The strong wind howled through the trees, making the leaves rustled noisily. She could hear the neigh of the horses as the coachman talking to the horses and whipping sounds along her journey to the estate. Working all day without a proper rest exhausted her extremely. And Evelyn did not realize when she reached the second manor because she unconsciously took a brief nap in the carriage.

Evelyn taught her patient was Little Lady Grace. Thus, it surprised Evelyn when the maid assisted her to the third floor once she reached the second manor. The maid brought her to a guest room.

She saw Damien, Grace, and Ryan were waiting eagerly for her outside of the room. And none of them were injured, and Grace looked perfectly fine.

"What happened?" asked Evelyn. She had anxiety in her hazel-colored eyes. "You guys looked alright."

"No. Not us. The patient is in the room." Ryan opened the door of the guest room. He told Evelyn to go inside.

The maids were also in that same room, circling the bed. The minute the doctor arrived, Damien ordered the servants to leave the room and wait outside. Let the doctor do her job.

Evelyn saw her new patient in an unconscious state. "Who is this?" asked Evelyn. That was her first time meeting this young woman. Damien's recent scandal?

"A vampire."

"A guest."

"My savior."

Three of them answered at the same time. It was an awkward situation.

"Okay… can someone please explain this to me?"

"She is a vampire that saved me in the slave house, and now she is our guest." Grace explained.

The answer did not quite satisfy Evelyn. "That explained everything. But this woman does not look like a vampire." Evelyn was sharp. By the way, she used to live in the Southern Republic when she was an apprentice doctor.

Damien, Grace, and Ryan were astounded at hearing that statement. Evelyn looked like she figured out something.

To verify her doubt, Evelyn hurriedly opened her medical bag and took out a stethoscope. Before she did auscultation, she checked her stethoscope by tapping on the diaphragm and used the earpieces to listen for sounds to make sure there was no leak. She was too rushed before that she brought her old stethoscope instead of her new one. And to make her patient feel more comfortable, Evelyn warmed up her stethoscope by rubbing it on her sleeve. Then she held the diaphragm over the patient's heart. She checked on her time watch and listened to the patient's heart for a full minute. And it sounded normal! "She is not a vampire! She has heartbeats!"

Evelyn frightened others! How the hell could she guess it so fast?!

"I think she is a Dhampyr," said Evelyn. Her conclusion made them sighed out of relief.

A dhampyr is a human-vampire hybrid, also known as half-human and half-vampire. A dhampyr is a half-immortal and an offspring of a female human and a male vampire. A dhampyr exists. However, it is an extremely rare occurrence to meet one. They lived outside the vampire circles and mixed in the other creatures.

A long time ago, humans used to leave in the Underworld Realm. But when their existence is in danger, God created the Human Realm. But the dhampyres stayed in the underworld because they considered themselves as monster creations. However, they do not consume blood, because they can eat normal food. And they are not as dangerous as vampires, but they are much stronger than them. A dhampyr can control its lust for blood and walk under the sun openly.

"You met her in the slave house, Grace?" asked Evelyn again. She was excited to know more.

"Yeah. Is she alright?" Grace looked worried.

Evelyn put her stethoscope inside her medical bag and nodded. "Yes, she is. She's just sleeping. It looks like she does not have a good rest and she is a little thin for an adult. You guys don't feed her?"

Grace sighed softly after listening to the doctor. Then she gave a death glare to her brother.

"And what the hell is this?" Evelyn touched the bandaged wound on her patient's neck.

"Brother Damien almost cut her neck and kill her alive!" Grace responded.

"Okay! Can we stop talking about that?!" Damien tried to defend himself. Yet everyone hooked their eyes on him and made him feel more troubled. A sense of guilt hit Damien!

"You did what, Damien?" Evelyn could not believe her ears. Her eyes blinking in shock. "Who swings a sword to a savior?"

"Well, he DOES!" Grace crossed her arms frustratingly and rolled her eyes in irritation.

Evelyn shook her head, as she was also disappointed in Damien. "You are no longer on the battlefield, my friend. And she is a woman! You need to learn to be gentle to the ladies other than your little sister. You are so barbaric, Damien!"

"And I was hoping before for Sister Yuki to attend the ceremony," said Grace in regret.

"Have you gone mad? She cannot be there. People will see her!" angered Damien.

Grace spoke without looking directly at her brother. "Well, thanks to you now she cannot go, anyway."

"Masters… please calm down." Ryan to the rescue!

And they kept silent afterward. The heated argument between these two loving siblings was a rare sight to behold. It was Evelyn's first time seeing them fought with each other. She realized Grace truly cherished the dhampyr. So much that she preferred her savior to her brother.

"Are you going to attend the ceremony tomorrow, Sister Evelyn?" Grace tried to change the topic. She could not continue the argument anymore. She was soft to her brother. Once Yuki healed completely, Grace would start talking nicely to Damien. Well, maybe.

"Of course, I will! I closed my clinic for tomorrow just to attend the ball!" replied Evelyn in delight.

"You can stay here overnight," said Damien. He permitted Evelyn to spend the night in the second manor.

"Yeah, I am planning for that." Evelyn looked at Ryan and smiled.
