Chapter 2: the timid whisper continue

I asked in a worried tone. "I've never seen a black card before… carry it around on your person, it'll get you into exclusive events, allow you to challenge people if you so chose, and if you look at others cards you'll be able to tell their strength and hold back if you see fit. One more thing, you'll need a weapon. There should be a forge somewhere on campus so when you feel up to it go make a commission and they'll make it for you. Make sure it's unique so people don't immediately know what you can do. But also make sure it's something you can use so nothing impractical like a gun scythe or anything like that"

I already had an idea of what I wanted, I nodded. By the time the conversation ended we had made it to my dorm room. Out of the blue, I felt something grab my hands. She turned me around and looked me in the eyes. She spoke under her breath, "I swear that I will protect you if you get in over your head."

a voice rang in my head "don't lose the trust of this one"  The next day, the bullies were back, they showed me their cards. I remembered what the elf had told me yesterday about the colors of the cards.

The men in front of me shouted "we fighting or what!?" their cards were yellow. I let out a sigh. "No effort needed." "I guess we are" they got their weapons out, to which I raised an eyebrow, I didn't have my weapon yet but it was good to know that you could pull it out in situations like this. They charged me and I simply stood still, I knew exactly what to do in this situation. I focused and turned my skin from the papiery human flesh to scales. The first one to hit me was a sword, which didn't just bounce off, it shattered. I chuckled, then slipped into a psychotic cackle. "Come on! I thought you said we were fighting!" I pulled the one who hit me and kneed him in the chest and dropped him onto the floor with his air knocked out of his lungs. The other two ran in terror, dragging the one who was knocked out.

I walked back to my dorm, breathing slowly to calm down, I made some food, took a shower and ate a sandwich. After about an hour I made my way to the smithy. I walked in and the shop was warm and quite welcoming. The woman behind the counter spoke with a hearty irish accent, a sign on the counter said Grechtin, but seemed to be able to read my situation. "What will you be having lass?" Her voice was very soft and motherly. Tears tugging at my heart as I remembered how alone I really was in this place. I started to cry at how kind the woman was and how much she reminded me of my mother. She was killed when I was five and it wasn't an accident, and yet the court let him go with a warning. She walked over and slowly put a hand on my shoulder.

"What's wrong, lass..? Something bubbling up inside..? Suppressed emotions, or reaction to something?" she wiped away my tears.

"You remind me of my late mother. She was… burned at the stake… My father left me. I've got no one left… so I came to this school to escape and now I learn that there's no escaping fights…"

She sighed and started to tenderly stroke my back. "Sadly violence is not something easily avoided, no matter how hard you try to live a peaceful life. The way I see it violence is like a constrictor, no matter how hard you try to get away, no matter how hard you struggle, it continues to squeeze the life out of you until you can't fight back. Then it consumes you until there's nothing left."

"You have beautifully abnormal eyes… It's not everyday you meet someone with two different one's such as yourself. Blue and orange. The arcane must favor you very much. Do you have any training?" she asked in an interested tone, as if she was genuinely curious. "N-no ma'am, I've read the books but I haven't put the teachings into practice"  She smiled "I've always wanted to try this, hold out your hand." as I did she placed a rock in my hand "output a small amount of magic into the rock in your hand." As I did I felt a rush of something hard to describe, it was like getting shocked by an electrical socket, a jolt hit my nerves as I channelled aura. The rock glowed like freshly heated metal and then turned to dust, burning away. My skin became warm and I felt a sense of ease and comfort. I felt all my muscles relax as the warmth cloaked me. "It seems like elemental magic might be your forte, though it could be specialist, I'll need to see." she pauses and remembers what I came here for "we seem to have gotten off track, back to business" I described the weapon and she got to work.
