Chapter 2: Life Of Sye...(See What I Did There?)

Sye, of the Yidden, is a large, but not huge man. not particularly large in the sense of height, for he is not the tallest in his clan. nor weight or width of shoulder or breadth of chest for though he is strong, yet still not the strongest. Rather, Sye is large in a different, often unappreciated way. Sye is large in his capacity to love those both close to him and those he has just met, and his need to protect them. So let's go see how Sye is doing, shall we?

In a small library, sits a boy, hunched over a different kind of magic, the magic of literature. as he - I - sit, enrapt in stories of heros and heartbreaks, and other wonderfull H's, my life doesn't wait for me. while others play with friends or study so they can do well, I am trapped in this trap you know all to well. it's not that I dont wish to do these things too, it's just that I can't help myself. I love the books almost as much as I love family and friends and learning, which is why I do make time for those things, it's just that books are so much EAISER. anyways, as I sit there, and leave, and come back, and leave, and repeat this process for years on end, I suddenly discover, too late, I have missed the best years of my life. now, this being the case, I have 2 options. A. I can give up and be depressed, or B. I can realize that just because im older now doesn't mean these years can't be better than those ones could have been. I chooses the second option. whats gone is gone and lost opportunities are lost, dont waste the ones you have now crying over what could have been. so, for the first time in years, I straightens my back, with many cracks. close my beloved book with a finalized thump. stand from my old wooden chair with an age old squeek, and rise to greet the day, no longer beholden to fantasy and spells of paper and ink, wanting to start a new book, this one called life.

"Sye?" comes the questioning call " you know it's only 2, and you dont usually close your book for your bathroom and eating break until about 10. is everything alright?" I look up and see a face that I know I knows, but only vaguely recognize. "..." I stare at her, trying to recall how I knows her and what her name is. "have you forgotten again? you're only 30, you shouldn't have such bad memory at your age. look at me, I'm in my 70's and I still remember your name. i swear, it's because you never take your head out of those books. sure, books can be good for you, but not if that's all you do! you've been coming here nonstop everyday all day since you left school, dont you think it's time you took a break from books?" I look at her with mild amusement, and reply "that's exactly what I got up to do, Ms...?" "call me Grammy. nice to meet you. Again. now were you serious about what you just told me, because If so, that is the best thing I've heard all day!". "its true, Grammy," I say "I'm gonna go out and start living". Grammy starts tearing up a little, gently closed the book in front of her, and clasped her hands together, "you have no idea how happy it makes me to here you say that. as much as I love you like a grandson, and love your passion for books, I want you to live a real life, not a fantasy". so saying she waved one of her frail little hands in the air with a flourish, and all the books from my table, which I had used for years, started flying back to their original spaces on the shelves, which had sat unoccupied for so long that dust had settled there in quite significant amounts. "now get, I dont want to see you back here later, begging to be let back in. but know that if you are ever in need, you can always find sanctuary here". feeling touched, I go in for a hug, but am swept out the door by that very same magic, the door closed behind me with a solid THUMP! I jump slightly at the sound, still trying to figure out what just happened, when a little girl I'm fairly certain I know runs by, looking behind her and all around, trying to be as stealthy as possible. curious as to why she is running in such a inconspicuous manner that's so obvious it's cute, I call out to her, "little one, why are you running? and dont you know you have to be careful to look where you're going?" coming to a sudden skidding stop, she turns to look at me, first in adorable haughtiness, with her little nose in the air, then in awe when she sees who spoke to her. "uncle Sye, is that you?"
