Chapter 2: The Horde

Sol rode through a desolated that led to the inner city. The city was designed as two separate parts: the circle which is the inner city and the outer city which is a ring that encircles the inner city. For some reason, the designer of the city placed a large gap in between the two parts. The gap is barren. No plants. No animals. Not even a sign of life. Except for a few hundred monsters. Occasionally, the monsters group up killing every living thing in their territory. This is one of those days.

While Sol was riding, he could hear a shrill scream in the distance. Sol stopped his bike and looked around. The land around him was a beige coloured and there distortions in the air due to the extreme heat. Then appeared a small dot. It was unrecognizable but then a few moments it started to look like a human figure. Then appeared a hazy black horde behind him. Sol hesitated for a moment and then sharply turned his motorbike and kicked up dust as he rushed towards the person.

Sol pulled out his sword and held it out to his right. He skidded in an arc killing a few monsters. The monsters hesitated as few of their kin were killed. Then their savage behaviour returned as they realized that the weakest were killed. Sol shouted at the person to climb on. He scrambled on to the bike and Sol revved the engine and sped off leaving a trail of dust.

Sol could feel the intensity of the hundred gazes from the monsters increased by tenfold. He increased the power of his bike. Sol shouted over the noise of his bike," Do you have anything that may help?" He turned around and the first thing he saw was the tier above the person he just saved. "12-B! What the hell are you doing out here?"

The rescued person passed a crude and thick gun, "Its useless in my hands but I hope it becomes more powerful in yours. I found it buried somewhere nearby." Sol grabbed it and the gun started to evolve. The nozzle became thinner and the entire gun became lighter and more elegant. "Wow! But, it didn't evolve in my hands?", the owner exclaimed.

"Perhaps, your tier is not high enough.", Sol pointed towards the monsters and pulled the trigger. A small object flew out at a high speed. It embedded itself into a monster, severing its windpipe. Then hell broke out. The monster erupted with enormous energy killing the others around it. Sol was lucky that the monsters were crowded so closely. The monsters stopped looking at Sol and started to ravage the corpses of the dead monsters. This gave Sol a chance to gun the bike and reach the inner city wall which was around 10 kilometres away.

When they reached the gate, a soldier blocked their way and asked for their IDs. Sol was going to reply but the person behind him stopped him.

"Let us in."

The solider's eyes moved to him and respectfully said."Sorry, Master Oliver." and opened the gate. Sol looked at Oliver at raised his eyebrows in surprise. Sol then rode the bike to the place where Oliver directed. A man in his forties ran up to the bike and exclaimed, "Thank god you're safe!"

"Dad, meet uh…"

"Sol"

"Yes, Sol. He saved my life."

"Thank you, Sol. Please come in.", Oliver's father said. Sol got down his bike and Oliver tried to gun the engine for fun. Nothing happened. Sol laughed, " You need to be at least 5-C to ride it." Oliver's expression change from one of happiness to a frown. They walked inside the mansion. The mansion was made of a silvery metal. The air inside was colder than the warm humid air outside. Sol marvelled at the luxury that Oliver lived in since he was born. When he compared it to his childhood the only luxury he had enjoyed was time with his father. But that was taken away from him too.

Oliver's father led them to a dining room. He motioned them to sit down and then sat at the head of the chair. Sol took his seat and heard Oliver's father say, "So, how may we repay you?" As Sol was about to answer, he heard a voice say, "Dad, I'm home." a burly man walked inside the room. Then Sol's eye met his. The same voice then yelled at him, "You!"
