He took a small sip from the cup in hand as his eyes searched the room. He still wore his usual passive expression, smiling now and then at the guests. But from the way he fidgeted with his wedding ring, anyone could tell he was anxious.
A sudden tap on the shoulder broke his train of thought. Turning around, he immediately stiffened.
"Mrs. Belle", he greeted, the same feigned smile plastered on his lips.
"Thomas! How dashing you are looking tonight", the lady spoke in her usual calm tone.
"You look very beautiful yourself", he said , smile widening. This was usual. Thomas was now accustomed to the flattery and small talk. He had adapted rather quickly.
"Where is your wife though?"
"She went to see the bride I suppose."
She didn't miss the way her son-in-law's eyes glinted at the mention of the bride.
"So, I heard you know her pretty well?"
"Yes I do indeed.We used to be neighbours. We were... good friends."
"Oh", her expression changed slightly .
"That was all in the past though", Thomas was quick to cover up. The last thing he wanted to do was give the lady unnecessary suspicions. Her calculated smile returned as a commotion began in the hall.
