Chapter 5: The Day I Died (1)

Before this chapter starts I should mention that this chapter and the next one are mainly for world-building, as such you don't have to read it in order to keep up with the plot. If you would like, you can simply skip to chapter 8 for the main plot.

-----------------------------------

My name is Shiro Tsukasa, and I am a member of the Demon Corps, well... sort of.

I am part of the Kakushi, which is a subdivision within the Demon Corps that handles the aftermath of any battles between the Demon Slayers and those abominations.

Those heartless freaks would even eat their own mothers if given the opportunity. The fact that they were once human is enough to make me nauseous.

The Demon corp is unfortunately not recognized by any government, but that's only because they don't know how monstrous those demons are. If only they knew what they were capable of. If only they knew what they had done in the dark, they would support us in full, and maybe we could finally end this war.

Until that day, this battle will continue to last. I only pray that it is not too late by the time those fat pigs open their eyes and see reality for what it is.

Today, I and some other members of the kakushi were called up to deal with the aftermath of a big battle. From what the kasugai crows tell us, it seems that we sustained heavy casualties. A total of four demon hunters died.

I don't mind suturing wounds or bandaging broken bones, but having to bury the dead bodies of my comrades is the most difficult task I've ever done. Thankfully I've only ever had to do it twice before.

It's dark and cold outside. Sometimes I wish those demons would fight during the day, but even I know that's impossible. Those freaks will turn to ashes if they come out during the day. If it wasn't for this weakness we might not even have a need for the Demon Corp, because everyone would've been livestock instead.

Regrettably, this also means that we have to work during the night, and oftentimes we don't get to sleep until the morning, not to mention that the night is also very unsettling. Who knows how many of those demons are lurking about.

The other members and I are riding on a wagon until we reach the town. By the looks of it, the battle took place nearby, in some random noble's mansion. Five demon slayers participated in the raid but only one survived, the battle must've been brutal.

I feel sorry for the demon slayers.

They are the ones risking their lives, while I am just picking up their scraps like a loser. I want to fight with them too. I want to take my sword and hack at their heads until there are no more demons in this world. If I could, I would even hack their heads in the next, but that's impossible.

The truth is... I am a coward.

This katana at my hip is nothing more than a decoration when I wield it. The Demon Corp wouldn't even have taken me if it wasn't because I was willing to work for free, and they needed help with their chores.

Even so, I never regretted my choice. In my eyes, if the demon slayers don't have to waste their time washing their clothes or cooking, then they can spend more time training and slaying demons.

Truthfully I know it's lame. The reality is that I'm just too scared to do it myself, and so I hope that someone else does it for me.

Before I could continue to self-deprecate myself, a voice calls out to me from the back of the carriage.

"Oyyy, Tsukasa. We're here. Pack your things, we have to quickly. I just got word that if we don't move quickly, there's going to be five graves tonight instead of four."

I nodded a the masked man.

Members of the Kakushi have their identities always protected as a safety precaution. While the demons may not be interested in planting spies within our organization, not that they could, they won't have any problems torturing some of the weak-willed members for information.

It has happened in the past, and we lost over a dozen members because of that. Ever since then, members of the Kakushi are always required to keep their identities a secret, not only to protect themselves but also to protect their families.

I envy those lucky ones that still have a family.

The guy that called out to be is called Konuma, and he is my superior. He is responsible for coordinating all of us and making sure that we don't slack off.

Whether that's his real name or not, I'm not too sure myself. Although I gave them my real name, I didn't tell them it was my real name out of respect for all of the other members who died.

I picked up my bag, which had nothing more than some bandages, needles, some thread, ointment, and a saw, although I hope I don't have to use it. It might seem weird for me to say this, but I don't like the sight of blood. Maybe that's why I can't bring myself to fight, maybe.

Jumping, out of the carriage, I along with Konuma and three other members of the Kakushi hurried along a narrow forest path that leads towards a dimly lit and grim-looking mansion.

The narrow path combined with the low visibility made the bare trees look haunting.

Sometimes I think about retiring, but there's no other place I could go, or rather there's no other place that will accept me.

We didn't have to walk long before coming upon a dimly lit two-storied mansion. As if to tell of the gruesome battle that happened here, there were gashes upon the wooden walls and the floors. Bloodstains here and there with no real order or pattern to them. In the corner of my eye, I could already see the dead body of one of the demon slayers.

How would I know he's dead?

Well, I've yet to see or even heard of anyone's neck being able to twist that far, unless they were a demon. However, since he is wearing the Demon Corp's uniform, I highly doubt that person is a demon.

It seemed that Konuma also noticed the body.

"We will tend to him later. For now, our first priority is to tend to the wounded demon slayer. Eyes up front, while the demon slayer and the kasugai crows have already cleared the area, there's no telling what dangers lie ahead."

And sure enough, There was something dangerous lying for all of us ahead. Unfortunately, we wouldn't know about it until later.

A little bit for the first-person perspective to get you guys invested in the story.

How did I do?

Hopefully I did well because the next chapter is also from the perspective of Shiro. Look forward to it tomorrow, and don't worry this is just the groundwork. Our MC will come in soon.
