Chapter 1: First Encounter

It was past midnight when Cheng Yan finally left his office building, because of his company's urgency to make progress on a project; his boss has arranged consecutive nights of overtime work for him. Tonight he has worked much later than the previous nights, and though they've achieved good progress, he felt mentally drained.

The cold night was eerily quiet aside from the whistling sounds of the occasional breeze, the luminance of the moon that shone on the pathways and alleys reflected a decidedly sinister glow. There was a creepy kind of vibe in the atmosphere giving off a melancholy gloominess.

The chill from the wind sent shivers down Cheng Yan's spine and gave him a bout of goosebumps.

Out of a sudden, a beam of bright light cracked through the ominous dark skies, similar to that of a lightning strike and something seemingly fell from it. It happened in the blink of an eye, that Cheng Yan doubted his eyesight. It was so fast.

"Oh, I must be overworked!! Now I am seeing things…"

Cheng Yan mumbled to himself distractedly.

To prove that it was not a figment of his imagination and to satisfy his itching curiosity, he decided to give it a check. Due to its close proximity, he could roughly gauge the area of the drop.

Rounding a bend near the corner, by the sidewalk in the shadows shrouded by the tree branches, he spotted something indistinguishable on the ground. He couldn't really quite discern what it was from where he was standing but his instincts filled him with a sense of foreboding.

So with rising apprehension, he slowly tread nearer but instantly stopped in his tracks when he was struck with the unnerving realization that the thing lying there distinctly resembled that of a human figure.

At this point, Cheng Yan was having second thoughts and regretted stumbling on the shocking discovery. He did not even want to believe it was real.

"That must be an illusion. I guess I really am too tired", Cheng Yan thought, trying to convince himself his eyes must be playing tricks on him.

However, no matter how many times he rubbed and blinked his eyes hoping his eyes were mistaken somehow, it could not dispel the dread that seeped into him as he was forced to accept the reality that he's definitely not imagining the body lying there.

He tensed up with beads of cold sweat on his forehead and a look of horror across his face. His blood ran cold sending shivers down his spine that has nothing to do with the chilling wind. Naturally, his first instinct was to flee the scene.

Cheng Yan's overactive imagination was running wild :

"Is that a dead body? A murder? What should I do?"

"Should I leave? What if that person is still alive? I could have saved him/her."

While he was fighting an inner battle with himself over what he should do, conscience and righteousness prevailed and before he knew it, his feet had taken him there.

On closer look, he noticed the rhythmic rise and fall of natural breathing of the figure though it was very subtle and weak. At this sign of life, Cheng Yan unconsciously heaved a sigh of relief and let out the breath he was not even aware he was holding.

Cheng Yan slowly approached with caution but relaxed when he realized it was just a girl. it appeared to be a tiny wisp of a girl though not really petite in stature but apparently a tad too slim. She looked to be unconscious and most definitely harmless. Her attire was very peculiar that seemed nothing like the norm and look slightly out of place.

A hooded black cloak covered her head and the left side of her body. Beneath her cloak, she was garbed in a plain black dress over a white collared shirt akin to those cosplay maid uniform straight out of an anime. Though not really an ordinary wear you would normally come across every day but not as strange either. Nowadays, these are all the trend and mostly common among youngsters, the city was practically littered with all these maid cafes with sweet girls dressed in such cute maid uniforms.

Reflexively, Cheng Yan's thoughts then shifted to wonder about the girl's looks and involuntarily glanced towards her face.

Her hair hid part of her face and only half was visible but apparently it was a face not of oriental origins. A set of striking features though not attractive in a conventional way but obviously has its own unique charms. The light dusting of freckles on the bridge of her nose stood out against the fair skin of her face but instead of detracting from its beauty, it highlighted the youthful recklessness and innocence. Long sooty lashes fanned her delicate cheekbones.

Cheng Yan then noticed on her forehead bordering her hairline, there were traces of blood and a slight swelling was visible. The reddening bump would most likely be a mild concussion.

He attempted to wake her by calling out to her and giving her a light shake but his efforts were futile and in vain.

Cheng Yan then debated whether to bring her straight to the hospital, but in the end, decided to bring her home.
