Chapter 2: Failed Test

Central Labs, Black Lock City, New York, the year 2070. 10:47am

__________

Chaos rampaged the room. Doctors and scientists scattered throughout all in some rush.

Dr. Wilson had just arrived. He could smell the sweetness of the vanilla coffee he'd ordered from the local cafe not too far from the lab.

The elevator music soothes his ears as he carries his suitcase with him.

Behind him, a large view of the distant Black Lock City amazes him each and every time. The buildings are high, the holograms advertising skincare products, and new gadgets. He could see what seemed to be floating trains transporting civilians to their destinations and the flying taxis used to transport high classed officials.

Dr. Wilson was nervous today. He could feel his hands sweating as the elevator came closer to its stop.

The elevator stopped. Dr. Wilson's neck got hot. His eyes began to water as he looks around the general area.

Sunlight rushes through the larger tinted windows.

Doctors and everyone taking notes and cameramen taking pictures of the cyborg who was being recorded live on the big screens of this room.

The sound of muttering and keyboard tapping filled the silence of this room to where it seemed no one had time to talk. Wilson walks out.

His picture in the small right corner of the big screen the cyborg was being recorded on.

"Morning Wilson!" Addison smiles.

Wilson nods and heads over to his part of the room. His desk is still a mess as he left it yesterday.

"Ready for today? For that check?" Addison rubs her hands together with a cheeky smile. Wilson settles in. Taking another sip of his coffee before setting it down on the metal desk.

"I'll like to check on her breathing and internal functions before we begin the testing. If started up wrong she could die in a matter of seconds. We want to make sure not only are her cyborg parts correct but her human parts are functioning well with the other half," Wilson informs.

Addison crosses her arms.

"So what? Call off the test for another hour? Scorpion is watching this live and if we hold them back... we could become big trouble. They gave us a deadline for this project. We've been working on this for over 3 years," Addison informs.

Wilson was looking at papers while she spoke.

He sighs.

Putting a finger up to his lip and scratching he sets the papers on his desk and looks Addison in the face.

"I've been working on this project. You just get paid. Remember that." He takes a sip of his coffee.

"Call the testing off for another hour. I want to run another test on her internal functions as I've said before. And I won't say it again," Wilson demands. They stare intensely at each other for nearly six seconds.

Addison raises her arms before dropping them to her side.

"Fine. Whatever you say, Doctor," she agrees.

Wilson reaches into his pocket keeping an eye on Addison who was now informing other coworkers of the orders Wilson had set upon them. He then pulls out a microchip he has yet to place inside of this cyborg.

So small, so powerful. This chip stored data and other things required to be placed in all projects this doctor works on.

Like that, Wilson drops the microchip into the trash. Balling up some papers he throws it on top of the chip in case anyone ever decided to look in the trash.

_________

Another and thirty minutes had passed.

Everyone was in position. Wilson sat there with his arms crossed and pen in the other. A pair of goggles on. On the ground was a red strip of tape 13 feet away from this cyborg letting doctors and other scientist know not to cross this line.

She was strapped to a chair. Cords running from the ceiling and into the back of this cyborg's neck.

Her arms were strapped down and her head leaning forward as if she were a human asleep or being restrained. The longer Wilson looks at her the more amazed he was about this project.

She looked so amazing. So astonishing. Photos were being snapped and the flashes of the camera excited Wilson.

"Prototype 1 being tested in 3... 2... 1..." a doctor pulled a lever.

A spark of electricity jolted through the cords that lead to her neck. Her body began shaking uncontrollably. Wilson's heart began racing faster and faster. His eyes widen as he watches this cyborg come to life.

But Wilson's life flashed before his eyes.

Two of the 10 cords detached from her neck. Her arms raised into the air breaking the restraints they had around her wrist like a hot knife through butter.

She lifted her head showing off the dark blue halo circles she had for pupils. Her head began shaking before she kicked one of her legs from the restraints around her ankles. She went on with the other leg.

"SHUT IT OFF!" Wilson couldn't help but scream.

Everyone began panicking. This cyborg's arms are still raised in the air and her body shaking.

Wilson dropped his pen and papers before rushing over to the lever. He lifted it up but it stopped nothing.

"SHUT THIS FUCKIN THING OFF! YOU'RE GOING TO KILL HER!" Wilson yells. Six doctors began unplugging each and every plug connected to this cyborg.

Sparks of electricity began causing panic around the room. People began running and backing away from this cyborg trying to walk but couldn't.

The lights went out. All systems in the room shut off before the machine powering the electricity exploded inside the roof above them all. The room went dark before this cyborg began falling apart.

Screws began falling from her legs. Her arms fell apart. Each of her fingers landed on the ground before scattering all over the place. She fell face first. Wilson pushed past everyone.

Dropping to his knees he put his ear to her mouth.

His palm resting on her soft face and silky hair as he listened out for her breathing. A sigh of relief washed upon him as he heard her breathing ever so softly.

"Why do you care so deeply about this thing?" Addison raised her voice.

Wilson stands and used both of his hands to lift this project from the ground. She was so light and fragile. Her arm detached from her body as he laid her on the table. the lights began shutting on.

"Backup emergency power-up." an AI voice came through the intercom. The room was bright again and everyone looked around at each other in amazement yet fear.

Scorpion was no longer watching this live anymore and seemed to hang up.

"I need a few more weeks. We should be ready by October 23. She ha-" Wilson didn't finish.

"No, Wilson. The project is done. We failed. Forget about it. It was crazy for me to think you could actually make a cyborg. We're better off with real robots. Come tell the clean-up crew to fix this place up," Addison demands.

Wilson didn't look her way. His fist balled up as he looks down on the failed test subject. He didn't even blink.

But he wasn't going to stop. He placed his hand on her cheek and moved his thumb slowly across her smooth skin and italic white jaw.
