RECURRING TERMS:

Reverse Boundary of the World: A mysterious, esoteric realm shunned by magi, understood to be the birthplace of Eidolons and countless other unfathomable entities. It's also from where the Flow of Mana originates. Called Imnun in Cimmerian.

Periphery: The conceptual space separating the Physical Realm and the Reverse Boundary of the World.

Physical Realm: The name of the physical world where the story currently takes place.

Flow of Mana (or Atmospheric Mana): Also known as Vile Ichor, Sea of Malice, and Flow of Corruption, it's a malicious force that seeps from the Reverse Boundary of the World into the Physical Realm.

Inner Mana: A filtered version of the Atmospheric Mana that resides within every magus after undergoing an Insight Ritual. It allows them to use magecraft and is a self-replenishing resource.

Insight Ritual: A highly complex rite used by humans to acquire magecraft. It consists of limited exposure to the Reverse Boundary of the World to gain knowledge and the ability to use Sorceries.

Magus: Someone who has undergone an Insight Ritual to gain occult knowledge and the ability to wield their Inner Mana. There are no records of naturally-born human magi.

Stigmata: Marks etched on the skin of a magus due to the circulation of high volumes of Mana through their nerves and veins, forming permanent scars with varying patterns.

Magecraft: The art of wielding one's Inner Mana to use spells. It has several brands called Sorceries, each with unique aptitudes, strengths, and weaknesses.

Spellcraft: A lesser version of Magecraft that commands the Flow of Mana through specific rituals or mediums. Although the results are crude spells, they hold the advantage of not revealing the user's imprint to other magi and not requiring an Insight Ritual to be used.

Imprint: A magus' unique signature in the Flow of Mana. It can be partially replicated, though only its owner can reach a 100% match.

Theurgic Field: A highly advanced construct of barrier magecraft that has been imbued with spells and/or special effects.

Fine-control: An advanced technique that serves as a basis for complex Magecraft and High Thaumaturgy.

High Thaumaturgy: The pinnacle of Magecraft as well as the crystallization of a magus' potential and strength. Only Thaumaturges and above have the required volume of Mana to develop it.

Low Thaumaturgy: A weaker yet still potent version of High Thaumaturgy, used by those who lack the required talent to become Thaumaturges. It involves sharing the burden of the Vile Ichor with a unique, compatible Relic.

Relic: An artifact specially crafted to conduit Mana and replicate Magecraft. Effects can vary according to its occult inscriptions, form, and materials used.

Apocryphon: An incredibly dangerous fragment of an entity from the Reverse Boundary of the World, consolidated into a dense bundle of Mana that acts as a variant of a Divine Relic. It's the core of the Mysteries and the holy medium that links them to their object of worship.

Obscure Numina (singular: Numen): A type of entities mentioned to inhabit the Reverse Boundary of the World.

Primeval Gods: A type of entities mentioned to inhabit the Reverse Boundary of the World.

Eidolons: Sentient bundles of Mana birthed within the Reverse Boundary of the World. They often crawl their way through the Periphery to enter the Physical Realm and are known to be highly aggressive towards all living creatures, humans in particular.

Gods Beyond: The main pantheon of deities currently worshipped by the Seven Nations, though they have no depictions, names, or titles. The Hallowed Sovereigns act as their representatives in the Physical Realm.

Hallowed Sovereigns: Deities in the flesh sanctioned by the Gods Beyond to rule the Seven Nations and, by extension, humans in their stead.

Heavens: The mentioned abode of the Gods Beyond in the Reverse Boundary of the World.

Seven-pointed star: A celestial body of unknown origins that appears in the sky a few days before the Sacrificial Ceremony.

Sacrificial Ceremony: A once-in-a-century holy rite where the Celestial Offering is butchered at an altar to honor the Gods Beyond and receive their blessings.

Celestial Offering: A sacrifice born once every centurial to be slaughtered in the Sacrificial Ceremony when they come of age. According to the Tale of Sacrifice, every one of them is a spiritual descendent of the Nameless Saint.

Tale of Sacrifice: A fable that narrates the first Sacrificial Ceremony, the reason for its existence, and the Hallowed Sovereigns' descent into the Physical Realm.

Nameless Saint: A mythical and sacred figure mentioned in the Tale of Sacrifice, as well as the first Celestial Offering. There are no depictions of his face.

Thilykos Rites: A secret festival held by women to worship the Hallowed Sovereign of Hierapetra. It takes place on the first day of December.

Adonal Virgins: Hierapetran girls and women who have temporarily or permanently taken purity oaths. They serve the Hallowed Sovereign of Hierapetra in the Caphygae Palace atop Mount Eurymedon.

Five Graces: The eternal, mythical companions of Hierapetra's Hallowed Sovereign and important cultural as well as religious figures within the Kingdom of Stars and Astrologers. They are worshipped as secondary deities in its Western Province.

Sidereal Revelations: The sacred scriptures bestowed on Hierapetra and its people by the Goddess Adonaios.

The Netherworld: A separate realm from the Physical and Reverse Boundary of the World that acts as a final resting place for the souls of the dead.

Dead Spirit: A mortal soul shackled to the Physical Realm due to its lingering emotions in the Flow of Mana, exposing it to its corruption. This results in a maddened, roaming mystical creature that can wield Magecraft.

Awakened Shadow: A corrupted figment of a living being's persona and memories, refracted through the Reverse Boundary of the World and into the Realm of Shades.

Realm of Shades: A particular realm in the Reverse Boundary of the World that's deeply connected to the magi of the Night Sorceries.

Profane Lands: Independent territories within the Three Continents and the Western Isles that refuse any affiliation with the Seven Nations. Their inhabitants are called Profaners. They have cultures, rites, and religions that differ and sometimes contradict the teachings of the orthodox temples and the Gods Beyond.

Ancient Language: An esoteric tongue unique to each nation that has been publicly supplanted by the widespread use of the Hallowed Language. Foreigners are prohibited from learning an Ancient Language other than that of their respective land, which is often used for religious and ceremonial purposes, as well as incantations for magi.

Homunculus: An artificially-made soul housed in a body of flesh and blood. They hold all information, memories, and skills acquired in their core, which they can release to birth a new Segment of themselves.

Golem: An elemental, solid construct created with the use of Magecraft. It can obey simple commands and is eternally bound to its creator's wishes.

Half-Dead Spirit: A magus-engineered abomination that forcibly ties a Dead Spirit and a deceased soul in the same body, mimicking a perfectly functional human. Their essences are ground together from the inside to serve as a sacrifice for the Bearer of Maladies' spell.

Pale Malady: A plague that sprouts pale-white feathers from its victim's flesh, smothering their organs and slowly killing them. It reacts to the Inner Mana and spreads faster in magi as a result, sporting a much higher death rate.

Pale Egg: A byproduct of a Half-Dead Spirit, condensing the Pale Malady into hand-sized orbs that can explode and infect its surroundings with the feather-sprouting disease.

Oath: A verbal contract between two magi that's inscribed in the Flow of Mana, capable of producing terrible consequences if not strictly abided.

Orthodox Temples: The religious bodies governed by the Hallowed Sovereigns and affiliated to the cult of the Gods Beyond. They act as the core identity that differentiates the Seven Nations from the Profane Lands.

The Mallacht: An accursed, circular body of water that marks the edges of the known world. It cannot be traversed.

Flickering Sea: Large body of water separating the Boreal and Central Continents.

Zurvan Sea: Large body of water separating the Central and Austral Continents.

Hollow Sea: Large body of water occupying the eastern part of the encircled world, where a string of mysterious islands is known to float aimlessly. It is shunned by sailors and magi alike.

Erstblüter: The name of Lichtenhimmel's ruling class, marked by their platinum-blonde hair and golden eyes.

Heilswaage: An intricate stave attached to a pair of scales, often serving as a religious symbol in Lichtenhimmel.

Cimmerian: An accursed language of unknown origins. It's said to plunge anyone who tries to decipher it into madness, and its mere use is answered by immediate execution in most of the Seven Nations.

Nuntius (plural: Nuntii): Sethian magi who possess a High Thaumaturgy or specific spells that allow them to transmit messages over long distances.

Siol: Short for an ni a siol aich am Mallacht, or That which the Mallacht has spawned. It's a derogatory designation for people who became magi through a botched Insight Ritual or dangerous exposition to the flow of Mana.

Lost Isles: A string of mythical, drifting islands in the Hollow Sea. They are called Erinnu Maatu by their inhabitants, roughly translating to Cedar Halls in the Hallowed Language.

Status imminens: A foreign magus allowed to roam within a particular area of the Sethian Empire. Criteria differ for each territory, and it's only valid for the region where it was bestowed.

Status aspexit: A foreign magus given the same citizenship rights as a Sethian non-magus, allowing him to live in the Empire but with heavy restrictions in magecraft practices.

Status magicis: A magus sponsored by a member of the Sethian Ennead to attempt the Iudicium and become an Imperial Magus.

Imperial Magus: A magus affiliated to the Sethian Ennead and officialized by the Magus Societas.

Iudicium: A selection organized by the Magus Societas to designate imperial magi.

Electus Major: A pre-selection that takes place in Prima Victoria. It allows foreign magi to compete for the sponsorship of the Sethian Ennead's occult orders.

Electus Minor: A pre-selection organized locally by the less prestigious members of the Sethian Ennead, giving outcasts and peculiar magi a chance to gain sponsorship for the Iudicium.

Novem Dona: The nine Sethian principles and core of the Empire's beliefs, comprising Fortitude, Cruelty, Kindness, Sagacity, Guile, Salacity, Boldness, Pride, and Greed.

Maxims of Might: The sacred texts of the Sethian Empire, bestowed upon them by the God of Guile and Conquest.

Nazaaru: The holy scripture of the Lost Isles' inhabitants.

Magimachy: The name attributed to a brutal series of conflicts and civil wars that ensued Sethia's Hallowed Sovereign's retreat from mortal affairs.

Infames: A vestigial caste of ancient Sethia marking those shunned by society due to unsavory yet necessary practices, such as corpse handling and executions.

Burial Collegium: A rootless organization that seeks to maintain the sanctity of death across the Seven Nations. They will volunteer to execute the last rites of anyone for free whilst respecting the dead's traditions and customs.

Dark Exodus: A disastrous event brought about by the Goddess of Secrets' decision to prohibit heretic practices in Qeharmenod for one year. This caused a massive emigration of dangerous magi across the Profane Lands and the Seven Nations, birthing many Mysteries and causing countless catastrophes.

Wyrms: Ancient creatures of flesh and Mana, as well as close kin to the Dragons. Their scales are thick and enchanted, capable of dissipating regular magecraft, withstand the corruption of the Sea of Malice, and swim freely through the bare rock.
