Chapter 1: The Good, The Bad, and The Dirty

"Nevaeh got an A." Everyone either ignores Ms. North or complains. She lists off the rest of the students who got A's. I don't listen, though. The list is depressingly short anyway. As I go over my test I smile to myself. Good job, you did it, Nevy! I blush as I put my test away. Mom will probably want to see it.

"Ugh, it's not fair! Nevaeh always gets an A." Someone in the back pouts. Ms. North sighs.

"Maybe you would too if you paid attention in class." My classmates snicker as the person huffs a whatever.

They are right, though. I do get good grades. I don't know why, but I always have to mentally pat myself on the back. Like I didn't know if I was going to pass or not. It's not as if I don't study or the test is hard. I just... kinda prepare for the worse. It's a mentality of mine. That's how my life went in the past so my pessimistic ways stuck, I guess.

I look up as the bell rings. Since I sit in the front I'm the first one to leave. As soon as passing period begins the halls come to life. Chatting, laughing and flirting of the adolescent bounces off the lockers. I grip my things firmly to my chest.

"Man, I was really hoping to get a good grade on Ms. North's test. Nevaeh's so lucky." I few people bump into my body as they never acknowledge it.

"And be a goody two shoes that's never even missed a day of school? Dude, I'm fine."

My pointer finger saves my glasses before they jump off the bridge of my nose. Maybe if I got the right frame my glasses wouldn't be so suicidal. I release a short breath to try to get my hair from out of my face.

"Yeah, you're right. Probably never even seen a dick." I wish people didn't talk about others when the person is within earshot. If they were a little bit farther or quieter I would've never heard them.

The hallways are unbelievably loud during this time. I look up then skillfully dodge a flying body as it slams against a group of girls. At first, they get all rude then they see who ran into them.

"Sorry ladies." He catches the football as it passes his head.

"Just having a little fun." They gush and giggle.

"That's all right!" I stop in front of my locker to open it. Let's see I have.. Accounting next.

"Well, I'm off. Again, I'm sorry." More giggling.

"Bye, Kahlil!" I close my locker then head to accounting. I don't see how people can play ball in such a crowded place. High school, I'll never understand it. I feel my phone buzz and already know who it is before I even check it. Looks like I have plans tonight.

Sweat coats my skin as the taste of metal lines my mouth. The lights highlighting every swift move my body takes. My arms flying through the air as my fists meet taut, rough skin. A growl sounds off before my opponent tries to go for one last hit but my toes keep me from staying in one place. I make one final 360 as my leg swings around to kick the back of his head. Another groan comes from him before he hits the floor, officially out cold. There's a short pause then there's nothing but sound rumbling through my body.

"And the winner is... Nico Grim!" The arena trembles under the screams of the spectators as the referee holds my arm up in the air. I stare down at my unconscious opponent as my chest rises and falls. Damn, that was one hell of a fight. Once my breathing calms down I watch the flailing arms and multitudinous of chants. I smirk, putting my hand to my ear. This causes the people to get louder. I wave and laugh as I'm taken out the fighting cage.

I pass by multiple people who congrats me before I get to my room. I then notice just how sweaty I am. Wiping my forehead, I spray water down my dehydrated throat.

"You were amazing out there kid." Coach pats my back as I wipe my mouth. I chuckle.

"Don't know, pretty sure I was 'bout to die." He laughs along with me.

"Had anything to do with that, old man?" I put my hood down and take off my sleeveless hoodie.

"Nevy, you needed more of a challenge. The matches started to get boring." I stare at the contusion which licks my shoulder then smirk.

"Plus, you can't deny," we make eye contact.

"That rush." We erupt with laughter after saying the same thing. Coach is the first one to sober up.

"Now, you change, they'll give you your money on your way out." I nod, a smirk painting its way on my face. I can already tell it's going to be way more than usual. I could get used to this. I glance at my phone to look at the time.

It's not that late, I think it's about that time I give myself a well-deserved reward.

I put all my stuff in the backseat of my car then get comfortable in the front. I start it up with a cocky smile as I think about the type of fun I plan to have.

As soon as my eyes greet the bland ceiling, I groan.

"Fuck! My head." I roll over then groan again.

"Fuck! My vagina." I feel a low vibration then glare up at the cause of the sound.

"When did you wake up?" The handsome stranger assaults my tumbleweed-like hair. He chuckles again.

"Was I too rough?" I playfully roll my eyes.

"I don't think I'll ever be able to walk again!" I deadpan as I roll into his embrace.

"Oh no, whatever will I do!" He responds in the same manner. I giggle then slowly sit up, taking the sheets with me.

I analyze the room.

"What the hell did we do that caused my panties to hang from the ceiling fan?" He shrugs, sitting up also.

"You're one wild child." I cover my smile as I playfully slap his chest.

"Oh, stop! I'm blushing." He grabs my hand, pushing us down. I bite my lip when his connect with my collarbone.

"I prefer you screaming." I squirm under him.

I should really get going... I need to take care of the kids.

A blissful sound escapes my throat when he nibbles on my earlobe. He stops, chuckling at me.

"You're lucky you're cute." I wrap my arms around his neck and capture his lips, devouring them. I'll leave after we're down.

What's one more round?

When I open the front door, I peek into our house. I sigh after silence drifts through the air. Sam probably put the kids to sleep. I close the door then ruffle my hair. I shouldn't have stayed that long. One more round, my ass.

"Nevy?" I look up and smile softly.

"Hey, Sammy." He gives me a concerned expression.

"You were out longer than usual, are you okay?" I go up to him, ruffling his hair.

"Did Nico and the girls get to bed okay without me?" He stares then nods slowly. I smile and pinch his cheek. He pouts, swatting my hand away. I giggle at his cuteness.

"Is mom home?" I subconsciously run my fingers through his hair as he nods.

"She just got off her shift," He frowns but relaxes when I smooth down his edges.

"She was so tired. She's sleeping right now." I nod then kiss his forehead, bringing him into a hug.

"Thanks, you did well." He returns the hug. After a while, I let go and smile at him.

"Alright, now you get to bed. We have school tomorrow." He smiles softly then heads to his room.

"Night, Nevy." I sigh once I hear his door shut.

I'm never going another round again.

I head into the kitchen and prepare everyone's lunch for tomorrow. Sammy's in the 6th grade and likes his sandwiches with chips in them. Nico's a 3rd grader with an adorable obsession. His food has to be in the shape of circles. I shake my head. That boy. Then there's Victoria, a 1st grader; and Gina, a baby kindergartener; who love Cuties. I smile as I pick up one. These baby oranges are absolutely delicious. After I have everyone's lunch in their boxes and put away in the fridge, I look at the clock, the digital red digits glow softly under the kitchen lights.

Okay, not too bad. Turning off the lights, I head to my mother's room. Her door is open slightly. I creep in at the sound of her hushed snores. She left her lamp and shoes on. I carefully take off her shoes then tuck her into bed. I smile sweetly then rub the discomfort from her eyebrow.

"Don't worry, Mom. I got everything under control." I kiss her temple then turn off her lamp. After I close her door, I make my way to my room.

"I need a shower and now."

When I go to my bathroom and strip I stare at my reflection. It's decorated in cuts, bruises and bitemarks. I chuckle to myself. If anyone ever saw my body they'd think I'm an abuse victim. I shrug.

Good thing I don't have any friends at school. I don't know how I could keep this up if I was popular. I crack my neck.

"Now, where's that nice warm shower."
