Chapter 1: Arrival (Part 1)

A lone carriage made its way down the road. Its destination? Teckleville. A small town, with no real importance in the grand scheme of things. But it was important to Morgantus who had been calling the town for home, since the day he was born.

Unfortunately for Morgantus, the carriage was still half a day's travel away from Teckleville.

The carriage was silent save for the sound of horses galloping along the road.

Morgantus' eyes were fixed upon the window as he thought about what was going to happen at Teckleville.

After pondering about it for a bit longer, Morgantus reached into his backpack and pulled out a small lute as he started playing a tune.

His fingers danced around the strings as they moved up and down in quick motions. Morgantus hummed softly as he continued playing like had many times before.

The carriage was not that silent anymore as a pointy-eared young boy's humming and strumming was added into the mix.

Morgantus' eyes were fixed upon the window as he thought about what lay ahead.

Teckleville had been the place of his birth. He had grown up there and lived his entire childhood in the small town.

Morgantus loved the little town with all of its green fields and forests. It was a quiet place that allowed him to do his own thing, at his own pace.

Now however, Morgantus was returning home after spending some time at his grandfather's place. He had gone there to visit him for a few weeks before returning home to continue his schooling and to perhaps truly learn magic one day.

His parents hadn't taught him much of anything when it came to magic. They only knew how to use basic spells that didn't require much thought and could be performed by nearly anyone with enough energy.

What Morgantus wanted though, was more than just learning basic spells. He wanted to understand why things worked and develop his own set of unique skills, just like others had before him.

But first, he needed to go back to Teckleville Academy. That would hopefully get him closer to his goal.

His grandmother always used to say that nothing worth having ever came easy and that everyone had to work hard for everything in life.

And if she were still alive, Morgantus knew she would tell him that yet again. She used to take him into the woods behind her house to tell him stories about magic.

One of the things she loved to tell him was that he was going to go to places he had never imagined if he worked hard enough.

He looked up from his lute, gazing out the window as the scenery outside changed to a more familiar one.

"We're almost there," he said, turning his gaze back down towards the lute.

As soon as he thought about the word 'home', something clicked inside of him.

Something warm spread through his entire body. He smiled to himself and closed his eyes again, humming as he began to play a peaceful tune.

Abruptly, the carriage turned the corner, throwing Morgantus against the back wall. He grunted, feeling the pain radiate throughout his entire being.

After a few seconds, the carriage turned again and his head launched forward, hitting the door with a bang.

"Are you comfy back there, youngster?", asked a gruff voice from the front.

"Yes, it could be worse...", Morgantus sighed, rubbing his finger across the bump that had already started to form on his forehead.

He heard the coachman chuckling slightly, followed by the thud of the horses pulling the carriage faster. Morgantus sighed, letting his mind wander again as the rhythm of the wheels beneath them drowned out his thoughts.

It felt like hours went by before the carriage finally slowed, making Morgantus wince as the carriage came to a stop. He opened his eyes, squinting as the bright sunlight forced its way in through the window.

"Home sweet home, I guess.", Morgantus commented, standing up from the seat to look out of the window.

He saw several houses lining either side of the road and he recognised his family's cottage right away. As the carriage stopped, Morgantus stepped out into the sunlight, smiling widely as he stretched his arms. He stood there for a moment, breathing in the fresh air, before starting to walk towards his family's house.

"Well kid, hope you liked the trip back home.", spoke a deep voice from behind.

Morgantus blinked and looked backwards. The carriage driver had come out of his cabin to greet him, wiping a cloth over his brow.

"And the payment?", the carriage driver said nonchalantly.

"Ah yes, sorry about that.", Morgantus took his money pouch from his backpack, opening it and taking out three silver coins. "This should cover your fare."

The coachman nodded and stuffed the money into his pocket, walking off.

"Now then, where would I be if I was Fediluv.", Morgantus muttered to himself. He walked towards his house, whistling a happy tune as he did so.

Inside the small house, the smell of cooking food filled the air. Morgantus' mother was bustling around the kitchen, chopping vegetables while his father was busy preparing their dinner.

His sister was sitting at the table, looking at a book. She barely looked up as Morgantus entered the room, letting him pass by without saying anything.

"Mom, Dad... ", Morgantus started to say, but he was interrupted by his little brother running past him carrying a plate full of meat.

"Here we are!", shouted his father, coming in from the dining room with a plateful of bread and potatoes. Following closely behind him was his mother, who placed another plate on the table.

"Welcome home, Morgantus!" cried his mother, as she hugged Morgantus. His father joined in too, patting him on the shoulder.

"I missed you both terribly. It's so good to be home.", Morgantus said, smiling broadly. He sat down at the table next to his sister, helping himself to the food provided. She glanced up and gave him a nod before quickly resuming her reading.

Im currently still writing my first novel, but I really wanted something else to write about as well and I have had this story idea for a good while too.

So I hope you'll stick around and enjoy the story, maybe I'll get to play around with ideas I haven't had the ability to try in my first novel xD
