Chapter 37: Dead Ends

~~~(POV: Albus Wolfric Dumbledore)~~~
~~~(Location: Headmasters Office)~~~

~~~(Date: September 3rd, 1991)~~~
~~~(Time: 1:48 PM)~~~

I've read and re-read the prophecy about the Aevum family repeatedly. Time has flown by in my dive into this mystery. What I have deduced is next to nothing, and I'll admit it's frustrating me.

Nothing seems to make sense, no matter how I attempt to decipher the prophecy. I close the book, stopping the maddening search.

I can look in other places since this book gives no new answers, causing me to go right mad. I stand up and make my way toward my bookshelf with the book. I put it away and head back to my desk.

After picking up some papers, I leave my office. I must distribute these papers to the professors and confirm next year's budgets. I used magic to make my job easier, and I'm not ashamed of that.

Budget paperwork is more annoying than figuring out anything about the Aevum family. The school day is about halfway over for the students now, and the few times I checked, Alex was still not in his classes.

Meaning he's in The Room of Requirement. I hope he's found a way to get the class assignments.

I head down the halls for the teacher who doesn't have class in session first. My current destination is Severus. I make it to his classroom and knock on it. The door opens, and I see Snape at his desk.

"How may I help you, Albus."

The same monotonous voice reaches me, and I wave the papers presently in my hand. I walk up to the desk and place them down.

"Next year's budget, I presume?"

A head nod later, I turn around to leave.

"Wait. I need to talk to you about something."

I stop in my tracks and turn around.

Snape has a slightly serious look on his face.

"I have concerns about professor Quirrell. I'm sensing darkness from him. Not to mention his constant absence from meetings and gatherings. I suggest you look into it, Albus."

His monotonous voice has a slight edge to it as he speaks. When Snape takes an interest in someone, that usually means they're no good. Quirrell was a great student during his time here.

If not a little on the weird side. I'm going to take this seriously, though. Snape hasn't failed me or been wrong before.

I take a breath and prepare my question since I'm curious now.

"What makes you so interested in this, Snape? Have you seen signs of suspicious behavior? A giveaway to a problem?"

He nods his head and stands up. We walk over to the Pensieve. He takes his wand, extracts a memory, and places it into the water. He indicates for me to look, and I do.

I'm looking through the eyes of Snape, and he's looking at Harry during the sorting ceremony. The next thing I see is Harry wincing and grabbing at his scar. Interesting indeed.

It seems directed at Snape, but only to the untrained eye. The only person next to him is Quirrell. I raise my face out of the water and look at Snape.

"We both need to be on guard, Snape. I have a feeling that something is starting to happen."

He stays stoic and turns back to his desk, and sits down. I take that as my invitation to leave. I make my way out of the potions class. The rest of the classes today are teaching, so I'll have to interrupt them briefly.

I make my way past The Room of Requirement, and I can feel hints of magic being thrown around inside. Alex is training hard, and while I'd like to help him. This budget debacle is my current concern.

Gryffindor is off pretty well this year and has many talented students. Granger and Harry show great promise. The Weasley boy can show some promise if he just wisened up a little.

However, the stubborn and slightly dull boy is too easily distracted. He'll grow out of it, but not any time soon.
