Chapter 5: Shopping
(Morning)
I was currently dressed in my best clothes, which were just a plain T-shirt and jeans and waiting for my mom to finish dressing up.
I sat nervously outside the door for my first day out with mom, in my previous life, I didn't have the time or patience to actually go out with my mom and I was too late to realize my mistake.
An extremely beautiful mature woman who looked like she in was in her early 30s was dressed in a simple white dress. Although the dress was just normal looking white-coloured dress, it gave her the feel of innocence and youthfulness.
My jaw dropped from how beautiful my mother was, I shook my head and thought to myself what an idiot that man was to leave my mother.
She looked nervously at me and said, "What do you think Kai?" She twirled around as her dress also fluttered.
Unable to put words in my mouth, I merely gave a thumbs up and said, "You look beautiful." No further words needed to be said.
Belle Morningstar, a beautiful woman who had given birth to me when she was 16, only to be abandoned by the father. For some reason, her surname was Morningstar, a surname that should've belonged to royal families but for some reason, we have it.
Even with my very high status in my previous life, I was still unable to find out about my family besides my mother. Such things either denoted that, they were extremely powerful, or they had been wiped out.
I was more inclined towards the latter as I doubted my mother's family was that powerful because how our lifestyle was before.
"Let's go son," She said cheerfully as she dragged me up to my feet.
We walked to a main street and I waved for a cab.
Seeing that I had waved for a cab, my mom urgently said, "It's alright, we can just go on a bus." Her old money saving habits had come out.
I shook my head and firmly replied, "From now on, you will be treated like a queen mom."
Memories of their poor life before surfaced in her eyes and she let out tears as she reminisced about how they had to walk 50km just to get me to school. I brought her into my embrace and patted her head while she continued crying.
"I still c-can't b-believe it…" She sniffled as she continued to cry in my arms.
"It's alright mum, from now on, things will only get better," I promised as I hugged her tightly.
After clearing her now ruined makeup, which in my opinion only diminished her beauty, we called a cab went to the centre of the city. Contrary to what people in 2020 might expect, there weren't too many technological advances that were made.
Most of the technological advances were made to military, space-exploration, underwater mining and excavation. The discovery of the Z chromosome naturally halted the development of science as humans started to explore more and more of their own body instead of focusing external objects.
However, there was tremendous progress to health sciences and the standard living age a normal middle-classed person might expect was 120 years. While the upper-class should expect something close to 200 years old.
Although most technological advances were not involved with everyday life, some important everyday appliances were naturally advanced due to other discoveries. For example, cars were now coated with plasma energy to avoid collisions with other cars.
Plasma energy needed a special substance called Cryotic to ensure that it will join together otherwise it will repulse each other, like a magnet trying to force itself on another magnet, it was simply undoable. The reason was due to having all of its ions being positively charged, not a single ion was negatively charged. One of the reasons why plasma energy was so highly sought after.
As the cab drove through constant high-rise buildings and places that with my previous status, I should've never been able to see. Flying neon cars filled the centre of the city as we neared our destination, the Queen Victoria Shopping Centre.
"5 credits," a genderless robotic voice spoke from the car as a fingerprint scanner emerged from the ceiling of the car.
I pressed my right thumb on the scanner then a *ding* confirmation sound emerged then the driver thanked us for our patronage then we left.
When we walked out, countless stares looked at us - a handsome young teenager and a beautiful mature woman. Our similarity in appearance indicated that we were either brother and sister or aunt and nephew. My mom looked too youthful to be counted as my mother in their eyes.
Some men tried approaching my mom but were immediately given cold glares by me. Only someone I find trustworthy and good enough will be able to date my mom.
Looking at the grand high-tech building before us, we walked in through the doors and a scene that would usually come out of a 2020 sci-fi movie – floating elevators, stairs and holographic screens that constantly advertised all the products they had.
"Well mum, where do you want to go?" I turned around and asked her with a bright smile while gesturing to all the shops surrounding us.
Instead of being dazed by all the new and bright surroundings – which was what you would expect from a poor family, mom was unsurprised by the high-tech things.
I made a mental note in my head about what just happened, but it was most unlikely that anything was what I had suspected it to be.
"Let's go shopping," She laughed joyfully, pulling to a shop that sold womenswear. I couldn't believe that 10 minutes ago, this woman was crying about how surreal the whole situation was.
Chuckling inwardly, I thought that no matter what year it was, women never change.
Immediately grabbing multiple dresses from their anti-gravity floating floor, she ran straight to the dressing room and tried on the dresses.
After maybe a dozen dresses, she had finally settled on what she liked however, they were the cheapest of all the dresses she had tried on. Most likely the discounted dresses of the store.
I sighed at her trying to save money, even though we had more than enough for now. I guess old habits are hard to remove.
"Ok, I've chosen them," Mom said as she held up 2 dresses on her arms.
Instead of grabbing the two on her arms, I went over to the most expensive section of the store and grabbed 5 different dresses and went up to cashier.
"I want all 5 in the same size," I pointed at the dresses that hung on her arms.
The cashier was slightly stunned from the expensive dresses I took but regained her professional attitude and smiled.
"Would you like them in a bag sir?" She asked as she grabbed the dressed by the collar put them underneath a small box-like structure that quickly emitted light blue lasers and scanned all 5 dressed seamlessly.
I nodded my head and she folded the dresses and put them in their store bag.
I thanked her and grabbed the bag while mom was still in a daze from the quick turn of events.
She span around in a daze and stuttered, "W-what just happened?" The extreme change from $20 dresses to $500 dresses shocked her into a daze.
The attendant smiled enviously at how caring the young man was to his elder sister.
"Thank you for your patronage," the attendant bowed in thanks and I grabbed mom and we left the store.
I thanked her again then grabbed mom's hand and left the store.
Mom then turned to look at me with a stern expression on her face as she started to lecture me about how I shouldn't be wasting money even if I had earned a fortune.
Helpless to her lecture, I could only nod my head in obedience and thought to myself that even an Arcadian Special Forces Commander is helpless to the lectures and ranting of their mother.
After, we left the store and continued to stroll around.
*Ding*
The daily 1pm sound on my watch clicked as we were in the midst of strolling out of the shopping section.
"Mom, are you hungry?" I turned around and smiled at her.
She nodded her head and suggested that we go eat McDonalds or something similar.
Once again, I sighed inwardly as her money saving habits started to act up again.
