Chapter 4: BEHIND THE WHEEL

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: DON'T GO YET~ CAMILA CABELLO]

Back inside the BMW, the man watched as the men ganged up on the girl.

"Raven . . . what are you doing?" A voice said from the other end.

"Shadow, are you seeing this? Pablo's men are here," The man known as Raven replied indifferently.

"They are going to hurt the girl. You need to step in!" Shadow, who was watching the live feed from somewhere else, shouted.

Raven rolled his eyes. "I'll pass; I don't involve myself with physical work and you know it. My job is to retrieve the chip and bounce. Until I see the chip, I'm not stepping out of my car. Let me know when they're done. I'll get some sleep now." He pulled his chair back and reclined on the car seat, closing his coppery brown eyes.

"Raven! Raven! We don't hurt girls!" Shadow shouted from the other end.

Raven who relaxed with his eyes closed said in a tired voice, "I'm not the one hurting her, and for her to stay out at night so late, she must have backup. I just got this jacket, and I won't stain them."

Shadow sighed heavily. "Raven, watching them hurt her is equivalent to hurting her. You promised your handler that you'd change this year, remember? You said you would consider human beings for a second. Raven —"

"Now that's better." Raven smiled after disconnecting the call.

Back at the entrance of the twig and petal flower shop, the young part timer held her phone close to her chest.

"Please don't hurt me, I wasn't calling the cops. I wanted to call my boss, I promise!" Lily begged as the men kept coming closer.

Lily's shoulder stiffened when she heard the men crackle their knuckles like they were about to get into a tussle with their fellow man. It was just her, innocent and weak. Were her tears not even reaching their ears, she thought. Using her free hand, Lily removed her glasses, now smudged with tears, making everything look blurry.

"I can't go down without a fight!" Lily fumed, wiping her glasses clean. She set her small hands in a fist, adopting a fighting stance.

"Bring it on! You women beaters!" She shouted, regretting it almost as quickly as it left her lips. She wasn't expecting it to be so loud.

The men glanced at each other for a moment, surprised at the girl's sudden confidence. Then they burst out laughing.

"She's one feisty cat!" One of the men said amidst laughter.

Lily felt her palm getting clammy, but she needed to defend herself. The men laughing at her made her feel so small. If she didn't stay out so late, if her boss had called earlier. No, if she never looked for a part-time job, and that was all because her father decided he was just a donor and nothing more. All these thoughts flashed in her mind; maybe at the end of someone's life, their regrets flash before their eyes. The young girl nodded.

"Get her!" The leader of the gang shouted when their laugh died down. The smaller person among all the men charged to hit Lily with a bat.

Beep!! Beep!!

All attention, including Lily's, was directed to the other side, where a black BMW was honking noisily, flashing the headlight annoyingly.

Even Lily scowled, almost warning the driver to stop what he was doing, but she noticed the men had their attention on the car. She bit her lips nervously; this was her opportunity to bounce, the party was over.

"You, you. Check who the maniac is." The leader pointed at his two underlings; they bowed and stepped away to carry out the order.

Lily craned her neck; she too was interested in seeing the crazy person who was honking so late at night when the road was free. She clutched her bag to her side, waiting to see the drunk person who was causing ruckus so late at night.

Meanwhile back inside the car, Raven was stunned at the girl's foolishness.

"Shadow, are you seeing the dumb human you asked me to help,"

Shadow snickered on the end of the line. He had been furious when he noticed the line was disconnected, he went further to call through the general office line, still watching the live footage on his phone from where he was.

"I think she wants you to really make it obvious you are helping her; who knows she might think you are a drunk driver just putting on a show." Shadow advised, enjoying the show because he knew very well who Raven was, and all of this was pissing him off.

Raven has never been an outside person; he was the foundation's hacker. Nothing involved him with humans, and he preferred it that way. The little sticky situation Raven found himself in was because there was no agent around the place; he had to go and retrieve the chip. It took time before Raven even decided to go through with the mission, and now he was here, and there's a situation.

Raven stopped honking, "Make it obvious you say? Those men left her, a normal human would make a run for it." He rubbed his temple, feeling frustrated; this wasn't what he was cut out for. Great! Now two of the men were now walking towards his car.

Lily's brow creased when the person stopped honking; she was enjoying the loud sound for some odd reason. She pushed her glasses up again, waiting to know who was behind the wheels.

"Run!" Raven turned his headlight again, "run!" He gritted his teeth.

"I think the person needs help; look he is making an SOS sign with his light." Lily pointed out when the headlamp kept flashing light.

"Really?" The leader of the gang turned to ask Lily.

"Yes, that's an emergency light. We should help the person." Lily suggested; her guards now dropping, feeling comfortable with the men like they weren't just trying to beat her up a moment ago.

Back inside the car, a frustrated agent sighed. "Oh now she's talking with them. Shadow, I'm done with this; I'm leaving the girl is capable of taking care of herself." Raven reversed his car back.

Shadow, who continued to laugh on the other line, said, "I swear that is not how other humans are; she's a little slow? I guess. I'm interested in her now, before leaving can you get her contact."

Raven's eyes fell on the girl's face for the first time; she was just an ordinary-looking girl. Basic, plain. A nerd, maybe because of her glasses, but there was nothing special about her. Including her small body.

Lily furrowed her brows when she noticed the car was about to leave; oh wait! I should run now, she thought to herself. Taking a step back, slowly she bolted out of the place, running like her whole life depended on it. She could hear the men shouting and calling from behind, but she didn't stop until she got to a busy area; then she stopped and flagged down a cab.
