Chapter 6: Another One
"Are we all ready?",asked Eva
"Yes!", everyone replied.
All of the ten children were standing infront of a table with a thin dirty stick on it.
Zane was not sure how that was going to work but they were all ordered to stand there and break that damned stick just with the power of their will. Meaning, they had to break the stick only and only with the help of staring at it and forcing it break with the sheer force of will, definitely without touching it.
"This is stupid",said Natalie suddenly from behind.
Everybody looked at her, surprised. Even Eva suddenly seemed interested in her.
"I am sorry Natalie, what did you say?",she asked
"I-I mean that this is stupid!",she inhaled sharply."NO ONE IS GOING TO HAVE SOME STUPID POWERS ABOUT BREAKING SOMETHING BY JUST LOOKING AT IT! AND WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?! WHY DO SUDDENLY SEEM SO INTERESTED IN ORPHANS?! WHAT IF WE HAVE SOME POWERS?! WHY DO YOU HAVE TO INTERFERE IN OUR LIVES?! WE ARE ALREADY BROKEN! THAT IS WHY WE ARE 'ORPHANS' LADY! WE ARE LOSERS! I AM A LOSER!..... BECAUSE I COULDN'T SAVE MY PARENTS!"
Saying those words, Natalie walked away with tears in her eyes. Every eye in the room was on her. Silence rang in Zane's ears. He knew how Natalie must be feeling, he had been through the same thing. His problem was just a little bigger than hers.
Zane followed Natalie out of the room, gesturing at Eva to wait and she nodded grimly.
Natalie stopped at the window and stared out of it, wiping her tears.
"Beautiful isn't it?",he said, appearing behind her.
She looked startled but tried to hide it instantly.
"Yes",she replied in answer to Zane's question.
Zane went beside Natalie and offered her, his hand.
Zane didn't know if it was strange for humans to be holding hands with strangers but in his culture, when werewolves were hurt or sad ,they held hands,and surprisingly Natalie took his hand.
"Are you okay?",asked Zane lightly.
"Yeah",she whispered, wiping the tears that were clogging up in her eyes and blurring her vision.
"So",he said."You're not human, are you?"
The girl chuckled nervously and said,"I don't know what you are talking about! How can I not be human?"
Zane smiled and said,"I took your hand and I couldn't read your mind.... you're not human..."
"What?!",said Natalie immediately taking her hand back."You tried reading my mind?!"
"No don't get me wrong",said Zane calmly."I did not intentionally try to read your mind but I can hear thoughts when I hold people's hands. I was trying to calm you by the way"
Natalie softened a bit and said,"Alright....But, did you hear any of my thoughts?"
"No",said Zane.
Natalie exhaled, looking almost relieved by that confirmation.
"So....are you gonna tell me what you are?",asked Zane, with a bright smile.
The girl shrugged and said,"Why do you wanna know?"
"Why are you scared Natalie?",asked Zane interestingly.
"What?! No! I am not scared!",said Natalie almost instantly.
"Natalie, please don't try lying to me...I can smell lies....",said Zane
"Are you joking?",asked Natalie grinning.
"No seriously...I can smell when you lie and right now,I can smell lies, nervousness and anxiety....",said Zane, sniffing the air."Lots of anxiety and stress, why is your heart beating so so much fast?!"
The girl looked frozen.
"Umm.....can you try not to smell my nervousness or read my mind or hear my heartbeat for a minute?!",shouted Natalie.
"Alright sorry!",said Zane, realizing his limits."Can you not just tell me what you are?"
Natalie almost smiled at Zane's curiosity about knowing what she was.
Zane grinned and said,"Are you a schenio? A harpy? A desugh? A benace?"
Natalie chuckled and said,"Oh my God ! What is that?!"
"Those are....umm...they are creatures from my .....planet",said Zane scratching his head.
"And you were saying I am not human?",asked Natalie smiling.
Zane smiled back.
"Alright, first you...tell me what you are!",said Natalie playfully."A....des-something"
"A desugh....and no, I am not a desugh....I am a....",said Zane inhaling deeply."A werewolf"
Many expressions at the same time, showed at Natalie's face. Shock, surprise, hurt and fear. Mostly fear.
"You're-you're a werewolf?",she asked again , thinking that she had not heard him clearly.
"Yeah, you know what a werewolf is?",asked Zane
"Yeah of course I know what a werewolf is!",said Natalie nervously.
"So...what are you?!"asked Zane smiling widely.
Natalie cleared her throat and said,"I am a vampire"
The bright colors and on Zane's cheek faded. His lips parted and his eyes narrowed and he backed away from her as if she was a bomb about to go off.
Then she smiled and said,"Hey I am joking! I am not a Vampire!"
Zane's shoulders relaxed. He smiled nervously smiled and said,"you gave me the scare of my life!"
"Yeah.umm..",said Natalie,"I am a werewolf"
Utter happiness glowed in Zane's eyes and he said,"You serious?!"
She nodded her head happily and said,"YES!"
"HOLY APOLLO! How did you survive?! I thought I was the only one alive of my kind!",asked Zane
"Can we please not talk about how I survived?....I am still recovering from it",said Natalie, sadly with moisture in her eyes.
Zane completely understood and he nodded.
"Yeah yeah sure!",said Zane."can you show me your eyes? I mean your werewolf eyes?"
Zane changed his eye color from bright blue to reddish brown.
Natalie nodded and closed her eyes and they changed from stormy grey eyes to hazel eyes.
Zane smiled and said,"They are pretty!"
"Yeah", she replied, grinning widely.
