Chapter 31: Spell Caster and Elementals

Cassandra stared at the contents. It was a black piece of paper as big as her palm. The edges were torn but judging from its letters that seemed to dance under the naked eye, it seemed like it was still usable. A protection talisman.

Made by the Saintess herself.

What a powerful talisman this one was! Maybe the only one of its kind.

Cassandra looked at the faces of the people behind the king. As expected, the bishops who had joined the opening of the hunt were not that happy to hear about the Saintess and her Knight lover.

Cassandra thought of the history books that called Rhea the Saintess instead of the Sybill. Saintess Rhea was the reason why the church hated Sybills. She was a revolutionary character who had almost ruined Zealandia and obviously changed the dynamics of power in the continent.

The Church hated her… but the Empire had been using the talismans that she had created to gain more followers. It was the cliché case of the power struggle between the empire and the church. And most of the time, the Church would win. But the empire would always use the same tactic to hit them—using the Saintess' name.

Of course, they were not actively using the term Sybill to address the Saintess.

Cassandra thought about how the Saintess had actually controlled her ability and used it to predict the future. Was that really possible? Had someone taught her? Or had she just been brilliant?

Cassandra stared at the King's appearance.

There had been rumors that the Corvus Family were actually descendants of the Saintess and that was the reason they had access to her talismans. Obviously, she didn't believe this.

Saintess Rhea couldn't use elements, and she had not had children. She could inscribe spells on clothing and paper, but that was the extent of her ability. Obviously, she was able to bypass this by using spells that could store magic.

Saintess Rhea was smart enough to figure out that she could use talismans to store fire magic and other types of deadly and powerful attacks. Aside from this, she had also used a different type of talisman that the other spell casters could not duplicate. The language that she had used to create those talismans that could summon fireballs and water spears was not from this world.

For a long time, spell casters had studied her talismans. After all, she was considered a spell caster—someone who could not do any form of magic without chanting. But they had not succeeded in copying even a single one of them. For a long time, many spell casters had started thinking that she wasn't really a spell caster, that she was something else.

To explain further, Spell Casters had two abilities. First, they could use spells to summon weapons and everything that they had seen before. To put it simply, if someone had seen a sword before, they could chant a spell to create a replica of that sword and use it to their advantage.

Higher spell casters could cast and summon elements too.

The Second type of spell casters could inscribe spells into paper or clothing. They called these talismans and they were pretty popular before for making protection talismans against the demons who had haunted the villages all those years ago. People who belonged to the second type were not known to create talismans that could attack people. They were best for defensive magic.

This had changed when the Saintess created some talismans that could attack people. Again, no one could really duplicate those talismans or even use them. Hell, no one had even seen such talismans before.

Now, the major difference between a spell caster and elementals like her was the fact that elementals could only use their elements. They couldn't summon daggers or swords or create talismans.

Since Cassandra was a fire elemental wielder, she could only use fire, and she had no way to use other elements.

People who could use two or more elements existed too. But most of them died because they could not control their powers or just turning crazy from trying to control such powerful elements.

Cassandra flinched when she felt the Prince's hand resting on her waist. The contact was minimal, but she was scared of seeing another vision again.

"Everyone please welcome Bishop Travis!"

Cassandra lifted her head and looked at one of the one of the Bishops wearing his usual black robe. Bishop Travis, the head of the Bishops walked towards the pulpit and immediately started giving them some advice about this year's hunting.

Bishop Travis had the same warm smile on his face. It looked gentle, fatherly even. However, she knew how deplorable the church could become. This wasn't included in the history books, but it was pretty obvious that they were hiding a lot of skeletons in their closet.

"The infected animals are there to kill you. So, I would advise not to show any mercy. Aim for their hearts. Melt them, burn them, impale them. Animals infected by the negative energy are already considered monsters. All they think about is eating and to them, you are one delicious buffet." Despite the Bishop's words, the warm smile on his face didn't vanish. "With this, I want to announce that the Church is going to reward the winner of this hunt. A one month visit to our training grounds with complete access to the tombs of the previous bishops. Each of the tombs has secrets, diaries, histories that aren't included in the books outside of the church."

This immediately piqued Cassandra's attention. Diaries and secrets? It could contain something about Lycans and Sybills and even Dark Ones right? She turned her eyes towards Prince Hunter. She wasn't surprised to see him staring at her.

She blinked at him. "We are winning… right?" she asked.

He snorted in response. "You can burn the entire forest and kill everyone in it."

But that wasn't an option.

Then he smiled at her. "I was kidding about killing everyone."

No, he was not. She could see it in his eyes. But she could only smile back. "I know. Of course, I know." But for some reason… she actually liked his suggestion.
