Chapter 7: Before Meeting
The stress consumed me. I invited my brother here without prior arrangement and without obtaining the consent of the kings. If it weren't for the fact that, Alia and I live in the palace, there would be no problem with that, but that's what it is. And I invited a stranger to this area, that closed to ordinary people... Even if this stranger is my brother, I shouldn't do it.
I just panicked and didn't think about the consequences of my words... Of course, I was happy that Lian accepted my invitation, but I should have obtained approval for this beforehand. Now it was troubling my conscience.
Eh, Lian always made me worry about him. And when I moved, leaving him alone in the city, my worries and fears about him grew into a huge monster with sharp fangs...
My brother was damn smart and intelligent since he was a kid. He had a quick and unique mind, but at the same time, he was quick-tempered and irresponsible, sometimes downright terribly reckless.
He loved to have fun, and out of annoying others, he created a specific art, always explaining himself with his fox nature. It was his eternal excuse for everything - It's because I'm a fox. These words were even his motto. In addition, he often behaved self-destructively, which was predominantly incomprehensible to me. Sometimes I had the feeling that he was afraid to deviate from his imaginary assumptions and principles because then he wouldn't know how to find himself.
I really would Lian would calm down a bit, find a place he could truly call home, and to which he would like to come back. And such a place is not only about walls and equipment, it is much more than that.
It was also my secret dream that my brother would finally find a partner, his mate with whom to settle down and who would take care of him. Unfortunately, he didn't even want to hear about longer relationships, let alone a mate or settling down. It gave me a headache. Just like the fact that he loved trouble and often thought there was no fun without it, and by this, at last, someone will catch him, and it will end badly for him.
I hope he calms down a bit here and will find his stepping stone for everything, including the life he leads. It engulfs him. It is like a drug with which you know you should finish, but at the same time, you know that without it, all reality will change.
Or maybe, I'm just really worried and panicking too much, as Lian says...
Taking a deep breath, I knocked on the office door, trying to control my nerves. Despite the fact, that the sister of the Fae kings was my mate whom I married, I didn't feel comfortable entering their office.
I was could to enter the royal family through marriage, but I didn't consider myself to be one. I was a simple wolf.
- Calvin, come in. You know you don't have to knock and wait for permission. You are family.
A deep voice snapped me out of my thoughts, at the words of which I sighed and opened the door.
Even though it was late at night and even the dawn of the next day was slowly drawing in, Vein and Verin were still working instead of sleeping. They did almost nothing else for several days. Most of the time, they were in the office enormously busy with something. And although I was curious about what they are so busy with, I didn't dare to ask.
I took a cursory glance around the cozily furnished, rather spacious room. At the words of one of the kings, I sat down with my head lowered on the couch that was located opposite the two armchairs on which the kings sat.
- What's happening? You're awful upset.
I swallowed the saliva that had accumulated from nervousness, and taking a deep breath, I told them everything without leaving anything out.
I told them about my stepbrother being targeted by a dangerous vampire, and even how self-destructive he was until I finally got to the heart of the matter, which was inviting him to come to me and Aliy's.
I was so nervous that it felt as if I had stepped back in time and was once again a wolf pup rebuked by the pack leader. It made me forget even mentioning my brother's name.
- I don't see any problem with it, let him come. After all, how much trouble can one shapeshifter cause?
- He's a wolf too?
I ran my fingers through my hair and shook my head at the words of kings. Especially on these first ones. One Lian can cause more trouble than ten people.
- No, he's a fox, and he can be... unpredictable. Additionally, even when he sleeps, he makes up intrigues and does it only to be fun and to annoy others... - One time, out of sheer spite, he broke into the FBI and forged an arrest warrant, exposing it to a person who upset him strongly. To this day, he doesn't want to say why he took such serious steps toward this person... - He is my brother and I love him, but he is like 'living' trouble. I will be greatly amazed if his stay here goes smoothly and without any disturbance.
Saying this, I sighed and solemnly promised that I would keep an eye on him.
My loyalty was shared between my brother, my mate, and her family, which became to a great extent mine as well. Although my words might put Liana in a bad light, I thought that I had to highlight as precisely as possible what kind of person he is and how he can bring chaos with him, while not revealing his secrets and not making him a walking apocalypse which he was not, however. Because he could be described in various ways - As a sudden hurricane or storm, or a natural disaster, but until Armageddon, and even more so until the apocalypse, he was a bit short of it. Fortunately.
Eh, but whatever you saying about him, there's no denying that he also had his advantages. He was proud and treated matters of honor very seriously. In addition, he had his own rules, which he adhered to, and he was extremely loyal. Not to mention his intelligence and cunning which unfortunately were also often the cause of his troubles.
- Don't worry. I think we can deal with one fox, even if this fox can be extremely troublesome.
- Exactly. We're more interested in whether this vampire thing is serious.
- In my opinion, rather yes, but according to my brother, it is not. This vampire is Julius, who luckily doesn't know that my brother is the one he's looking for. Or at least he doesn't know it yet... Just in case, I just prefer to take him out of sight for a while until everything is quiet.
- We understand your feelings, Calvin. You are worried about him, and there is nothing strange about it. After all, he is your family and what's more, your younger brother, which makes your protectiveness towards him even greater - Verin smiled reassuringly at me, after which he continued in a warm voice - He can stay here as much as he wants. And if he can really mess up, as you say, just try to keep an eye on him so that he doesn't get bored here and 'crash' everything around. We would prefer for our kingdom to continue to exist after his departure.
After these words, Verin laughed, and Vein followed him.
I breathed a sigh of relief at their words and consent. Being happy, I thanked them and then got up from the couch. With a big smile on my face, I said goodbye and left the office.
After all, I was able to breathe normally. Finally, everything things started to fall into place. The kings were forgiving, and my brother will be here soon. With his arrival, all thoughts and worries in my head will completely calm down.
Now I only hope that my kings and my brothers-in-law will also everything will start to go well, and that strange shadow in their eyes that has recently appeared will disappear...
