Chapter 18: Sewage treatment plant construction
2 weeks after the meeting
Since Ash got the permission to construct the sewage treatment plant, he decided to first see how the underground sewage system is designed. He went to the archives of the barony and got the designs of the sewage system.
The sewage system had many entrances and the sewage from many houses is being poured underground into an underground sewage stream. This stream is being directed to outskirts of the barony into a pond. The sewage is poured into the stream using huge tunnel ways.
When Ash looked through the design he saw that the stream is flowing west ward. So he decided to construct the plant in the west side of the barony. He went to the west side of the barony and looked for a vacant place for construction. Only after searching for 30 minutes he got a huge place which can be suitable for constructing the sewage treatment plant.
He also understood that entire tunnel from where the sewage stream is flowing through ends half kilometer away. He showed the craftsman of the village 2 weeks ago to make Cast iron pipes and Galvanized iron pipes. The Cast iron pipes are used from the drain sewage entering the plant and Galvanized iron pipes are used as outlet of the clean water.
With the use of magic they were able to manufacture large scale pipes. Ash asked them to bring those pipes to the construction site. Using Earth magic from the baroness's court magicians he was able to built the exterior of the sewage treatment plant. He also asked them to leave several big holes in the plant to install big pipelines by showing them the plant blueprint.
He has been making several parts and pumps of sewage treatment plant with the help of system since 2 weeks ago. System consumed 5 million gold and sold him the parts and pumps required for a sewage treatment plant. Usually the price of these parts would be very high if it was earth, since it is another world these parts and pumps came at a very low price.
He explained the construction guild workers and other magical scholars the importance of these parts and pumps. He lied to them saying that he built these pumps and parts using magic.
The first step is to install bar screens to filter large objects which can damage the pumps and valves. So he used large vertical steel bars and planted them in the sewage stream. Compared to earth the sewage stream is not that big so it required very few steel bars which are big and 20 mm opening sizes.
Ash then installed a pipeline which directly enters the grit chamber. The The time around the sewage stream is temporarily stopped by the system for 10 hours to stop the flow during construction everyday for a month which cost him 70000 gold. The grit chamber is a tank to stop sand, egg shells and other type of waste to stop wear and tear of the pumps.
When the construction is going on his mother Jasmine came to see him and brought him lunch. He talked heartily with his mother and ate lunch. She has been working in baroness's household as a maid and is being treated respectfully. She is in charge of the kitchen as there has been no chef since 4 months.
When the lunch is finished Ash bade farewell to his mother and continued with construction. The pipelines are connected to grit chamber from bar screens. The flow of water is controlled here in the grit chamber. He installed a pump here with pipelines which will send water downstream to a primary clarifier.
The solids are separated in these clarifiers. He then ordered the construction workers to direct these pipelines to an aeration tank. Several pipes are attached to the aeration tank. Most of them are used for pumping air into the tank to convert NH3 to NO3. The main purpose of aeration tank is to perform the process of Organic material breakdown. Using BOD (Biochemical Oxygen demand) as the indicator for organic material present, the efficiency of the breakdown is determined.
Nearly three pipelines are connected to other side of the aeration tank which are connected to two pumps. The pumps send the water through pipelines into Secondary Clarifiers.
Even after Aeration there can be influent left in the water which can be removed in this clarifier. The Primary and secondary clarifiers are very large and are widely build by Ash.
He built a PAC dosing tank adjacent to the Aeration tank where Poly Aluminum chloride which he obtained by experimentation is added to water. he showed the resident alchemists the process to prepare Poly Aluminum Chloride. He also showed them how to supply it by providing large containers.
The PAC dosing tank helps remove bacteria from the water and make it clean from any micro organisms. He installed a ph scaling magical device. He calibrated the the device according to earth's parameters. He also arranged chemical monitor to determine the levels of ammonia, nitrates, phosphates and chlorine levels.
He also wrote a manuals for operation of the plant. Several workers were hired already and they were being trained by Ash. Quinn and Rose helped in recruitment of the workers and they also helped in logistics of gathering different materials for the construction of the plant.
He wrote a book on ph scaling and qualities of different chemicals used in the plants which is given to barony's alchemists which stunned them. They were mesmerized by the chemical compositions of those elements. He also prepared the periodic table for them to understand the sequence of elements. The alchemists found answers to the questions that were plaguing them for so long.
Big outlet pipes were fit to the secondary clarifiers which were extended to man kilometers away where huge digging is done for the clean water to accumulate. The construction is done in a month and then the test is conducted to determine if the plant is working properly.
Everyone is anxious excluding Ash. The system released the water and Ash gave instructions on which valves to direct the water. The workers did the work according to instructions from Ash and after nearly 1 hour they saw clean water accumulate at the dig site indicating the success of the sewage treatment plant. The news reached the baroness and the people of the barony. They were all completely astonished by the scale of construction.
The baroness came to the site of the plant along with Ash and the siblings. She also saw the mechanism and the clean water at the dig site. Since there are no motors in this world, Ash constructed few of them and placed them at the dig site for the water to be directed to all the households of the barony.
The baroness praised Ash for his work saying "You have achieved something incredible Ash with the help of Quinn and Rose. Though you did it for compensation to the punishment I am going to provide you with a monetary reward of 20 million gold for the construction".
"Thank you Madam" said Ash. The news of the construction reached other baronies, counties, duchies, royal palace and even house Randell.
The king Barry Norton heard about the construction of sewage treatment plant and was astonished by the information on its scale and size. He wanted one to be built in the capital as the capital's sewage problem is much worse than any other region. He heard that the illegitimate son of Randell house is the one who came up with idea and materials to construct the plant. He was also shocked to know his illegitimate son Quinn and illegitimate daughter Rose were also involved in the construction.
He felt a bitter taste in his mouth because he has never treated them properly. Though he made a law of providing knight training to illegitimate children, he did it to save face rather than any love for Quinn and Rose.
Even Harvey Randell is facing similar situation because he is very late to find out that his illegitimate son is a genius and he was very angry. He broke objects all over the office and tore his hair in frustration. If he had known that his son had such idea in mind, why would he let go of his son. He would have used Ash for his own gain and give them all to Donald after his retirement. He did not know that there will be many regrets lying in wait for him in the future.
