Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Night has fallen, the streets remain bare and silent. I breathe heavily, my tired eyes strain to see hidden threats in the darkness. A light breeze drifts between the towering buildings, leaving painful goosebumps along my arms. I shiver harshly and rub my hands together. I rush across the street, jumping over piles of rubble and watching behind my shoulder. I duck into the large doorway of the building and rub the drowsiness from my eyes. Paranoia has me seeing things moving within the shadows and sleep deprivation has made me clumsy. I stumble through the destroyed main hall, the once extravagant floor tiles now covered in a blanket of dust and wreckage.

Continuing farther into the building, light becomes scarce. I open a door that leads into a small office, I pull the drawers from inside the filing cabinets and dump the contents onto the floor. I blindly search for useful items in the modern desk and manage to break into a locked adjacent room. I sigh in discontent as I realize that I've come up empty handed. I lean against a cold wall and slowly slide down, resting my arms on my knees. Supplies have proven extremely difficult to find, most had been destroyed by the initial attack and the rest has been hoarded by survivors. Food is the main concern, its only been a few days after the race of green invaders descended upon Earth, but the energy being expended by searching for supplies has drained me. My mind needs to be focused when evading death.

My eyelids become very heavy and my head feels as if made of lead. My world darkens and sleep encapsulates my mind.

A low growl snaps me from my slumber, I sit up straight, scolding myself for being so stupid. I quickly exit the room, feeling my way through the inky blackness. Another noise rumbles through the hallway, causing my heart to quicken its pace. I freeze as my hand brushes against something with a scratchy leather texture and warm to the touch. I pull away quickly, sprinting in the opposite direction of the creature.

My entire body flys, full force, into a wall and I drop to the ground. My thoughts have become a disorganized mess, I jump to my feet and unsteadily take a few steps. I freeze, staring out at the pale moonlight bathing the large room in soft blue light. In the middle of the room sits another creature. It's long tendrils reaching out from behind it, the vines curl around its boney body and the mouth remains agape, baring its long and jagged teeth. My hands shake and I can't help but wonder why it hasn't moved. After watching dozens of people lose their lives to these monstrosities, I know that they have elevated capabilities than those of a human. They can smell a drop of blood from a mile away, like a shark, and they are capable of using vibrations through the ground to find their prey's exact location.

But this eyesore of a creature remains still, I look behind me to see, to my relief, that the other had not yet come to kill me either. Confusion floods my mind as possible reasons for this behaviour are ruled out quickly. I carefully step over a large tentacle on the floor and make my way towards the exit. My breath gets caught in my throat as a large chunk of debris falls directly onto the sleeping Alien. I brace myself for the bone-chilling screech that these abominations elicit when in pain.

Silence continues to suffocate me as the Alien doesn't react. I grip a rock from the floor and hurl it towards the monster, no reaction. I laugh at my own stupidity before continuing through the glass doors to the outside.

Once outside, I look for a mostly intact building, supplies are useless if they're crushed under tons of concrete. I see more of them, curled up into tight pods, using their own bodies as protection. I feel an eerie uneasiness wash over me, watching them stand perfectly still.

'The obvious explanation is that they are resting or in some sort of Alien equivalent, but that would mean that they can be woken up. It doesn't make sense because a falling chunk of concrete should have awakened the beast, but it didn't. Why are they like this?' My observant brain continues trying to find answers, with no luck.

'I thought I knew about them, the way they act, their capabilities, but apparently I don't.' I reaccess the information I knew of the Alien race, trying to make sense of their weird and powerful properties.

I'm so caught up in my thoughts that I almost don't notice the figure blending into the shadows. I turn into the building to my right and wait just inside the doorway.

'When he comes in here I'll tackle him to the ground and-'

"Hello, sir?" A small voice floats down the destroyed room, bouncing off of the crumbling walls and crackled tiles. I stare at the short shadow standing in the pale moon light. The shadow enters the building, looking around.

"I saw you come in here, sir. Can you help me, I'm hungry." The high voice floats through the air like tinkering bells. "I can help. I know things about the monsters." Her voices gets higher in hopefulness. The child turns directly to me and says. "The monsters are like flowers, they get their food from the sun. If the sun's not out, they go to sleep."

'Large and murderous Alien that photosynthesize?' I hum lightly and quietly sneak my way out of the building through an exit down the hall. I hear the childs confusion as she searches for me in the main lobby of the structure. She continues talking as I heave open the heavy fire exit. I feel a small pang of guilt pierce the back of my mind about leaving the defenseless child by herself. Despite my worries, I continue back towards my hideout to process the new information she gave me.

"This place is so cool, sir! You must have lots of food here!"
