Chapter 3: The Man Who Cannot Die

How many years has passed since blood rushed through his veins? For a long time, he felt dead and forgotten. No one is talking about his power and magic. No person alive is talking about how he single-handedly defeated eleven of the Celestial beings. Today, he's known as a man who does favors. Man has forgotten his legacy, but he doesn't want to display his power by terrorizing weak---powerless humans. What euphoria will he experience if he stomped his feet against a helpless human? What joy will that bring to him? Nothing.

For a thousand and hundreds of years, he did nothing but stare at the sky and curse at the cowardice of the remaining Celestial who lives in his house up in the stars. He sent fireballs and crafted potions that can create a humongous thunder storms and cyclones that could damage anything on its path. He created a plague, just to get the Celestial being's attention. But in the end he got nothing. Still, he felt nothing. He thought of his immortality as a curse and no longer a blessing.

Days and nights passed by, he has done everything. He transformed into a civilian and made love with a strange woman. He went to the world and wondered. He created more potions and beings... still, nothing. That's when he began to notice something in him change as well. His flesh was beginning to rot, slowly. His power gave him immortality and deception---perception of youth. But he is still made of flesh and blood. He is still human, and he realized that he will not last long.

After all these years, he was decaying and dying slowly without a purpose. Generations from generations, there are still people coming to him for favors. And when he asked the old woman "What can you give me in exchange...?"

The old woman smiled, and said "Ïn exchange for beauty and youth... I have wonderful news."

The man rolled his eyes and looked completely bored. How many times have he heard this before? But since there is nothing else to do... "Alright, woman. I'll humor you."

Excited for her coming transformation, the woman laughed and cried. She took a step closer to the Undying man, she came closer and closer until her dry lips were a feet away from the man's ears. "A great fire appeared in Florida. The media covered and declared it as Arson. My boy is a firefighter, and he saw everything... that was no Arson. It was a boy... covered in fire shaped like a lion."

The man's eyes widened. The feeling of boredom vanished and his body was filled with ecstacy. His head snapped to the direction of the old woman, and his piercing dark red eyes stare right through her soul. The man slowly opened his hand, a globe of golden and black dust soon formed on the palm of his hand.

"If you lie... after this spell, you die." He said in a low voice and the woman suddenly flew to the air. The man threw the ball of golden and black dust to the woman, and in a matter of seconds her wrinkled skin turned smooth, and her beautiful face as it was in her youth came back.

The woman left in awe, giving praise and thanks to the man.

'The old bag did not die.' He thought with a wicked smile. All the emptiness changed when news came in that a five year old boy inherited Leo's 'Fire of Life'.

Never did he felt so alive after hearing that news. It's the same joy as he felt when he first stole stardust from Capricorn and killed the Celestial beings. It was pure ecstasy.

Since then, he accepted more and more favors without compensation. And all he wished in exchange is something in return for the future.

First, he created small creatures that could spy on the boy. And from small, to humanoid forms of tar and coal. He used his magic to give the creatures not only life but their own individuality as well.

Eleven years has passed, and he heard that the boy grew to a young man---and with his growth---so did his power. From his small creatures, he heard that the boy could create and stop his own Fire. As well as he learned how the Keeper's hid the boy away at the heavily guarded fortress in Arizona.

A few people were training the boy, but the boy was not the only one growing, for he also had a plan. Long nails scratched against the surface of his arm chair, creating a sound that makes a person shiver. A man whose face was expressionless for hundreds of years was now painted with a menacing smile. He can feel it in his whole body. The power, the thirst and the hunger...

His cold and distant voice resounded against the wide empty halls. "Golind. I summon you."

In a snap of a finger a man covered in black cloak appeared just right before the entrance of the fortress hall. The man took quick steps towards the man, and with every step that the man took, tar and fire imprinted against the ground. Half of Golind's face is covered from his nose down to his chin. His eyes were solid black, and there's a symbol on the left side of his forehead.

When he reached the throne, he bent down on one knee and lowered his head. "Creator, you called for me." Was his humble answer.

"The boy is now sixteen years old. His body is different from mere humans. Once he reached twentieth birthday his body will stop aging and have reached maturity. The Fire of Life power inside him may give him immortality..." The man stopped and his already menacing smile turned wider, showing the fangs on his mouth and the rot hidden under his lips. "...I need you to get close to the boy. I need you... to get him for me... I need you to learn more of what's happening."

Golind raised his head and slowly he stood up. He stared at the Creator then immediately looked down when he realized the burden that was given to him. "Creator... I don't understand what you're asking of me..."

The man stood up from his throne and scream. "Imbecile! I just need you to do what I say!" His anger flowed throughout his body, raising his left hand he swiftly shoots a fire blast against Golind, making the creature crash against the paved walls.

Dust subtly fell and Golind coughed as tar came out of his lips. He stood up and immediately ran in front of his creator and begged for forgiveness.

"Forgive me, Creator." He begged out line sincerely. "I am not fit for such great task. The Keepers will immediately notice how different I am from them... and it may lead to the decimation of your plan."

The man stood up and looked down on the servant who is kneeling before him. "You made a point, Golind." He walked towards the creature and when he was a feet away he quickly grabbed a lot of the creatures head and let his magic flow to the creature. "You are weak. But I have the power to make you strong."

Golind screamed as the creator's long nails dig into his head. Yellow to golden dust flowed inside his body---making its way inside through him with his mouth, eyes, ears and nose.

"You will be my greatest creation, Golind." The man whispered, battling the pained scream of his loyal servant. "Don't disappoint me."

======================

A fortress stood in the middle of the Sahara desert. One of the few heavily guarded fortresses of the Keeper's Association. About a hundred individuals are guarding the fortress everyday. Sixty individuals guard during the day and forty at night. No one is allowed to rest while they're inside this fortress, for there is something valuable inside. More valuable than the lives of the hundred.

And it's the Bane of Scorpio.

Nathaniel is one of the five among the youngest Haris to be appointed as an Elder Keeper. He is strong, smart and has the tenacity to create a weapon against the Tar creatures. He is the head guardian of this fortress at only twenty six years old.

He was doing his regular inspections that three o'clock in the afternoon, when suddenly he heard panicked filled screams and calls for help. And the sound comes from outside the closed walls. Immediately, he runs towards the control room and without hesitation he banged his fist against the emergency button.

He was about to leave the run and towards the scene to check if his suspicion was correct. But then he ran against Zebedee and her face was as pale as a ghost and her whole body was trembling with fear.

"A tar creature penetrated the building!" She screamed loudly, making Nathaniel's ears ring.

'Fuck', he whispered to himself as he gently nudged Zebedee to the side and ran towards the entrance. When he reached the door he could see twenty Keeper's trying to stop the creature from coming in and were bravely risking their lives.

Nathaniel grabbed something from his pocket and crushed the enchanted seeds he extracted from the Forest of Zodiacs. He blew against the seeds and as the seeds went against the wind it created a blast that threw the creature away from the door.

A few Keeper's were injured due to the blast and the ones who can walk grabbed a hold of one after the other.

Soon enough the defense team ran outside and carried yellow pouches containing magic dust derived from the Forest of the Zodiacs. Ten individuals grabbed a fist full of the dust and threw it on the air. The ten stretched their arms forward and straightened their fingers. And before the dust lands on the ground, they start to say their enchantment.

"Galia iš žvaigždžių, pastatyk mums tvirtovę. Uždenkite dangų, uždenkite žemę. Neleiskite nešvarių į vidų."

The chants grew louder and louder. Soon a glowing light enveloped the fortress and the creature made of Tar and Coal failed to breach their fortress.

Nathaniel thought it was already safe, but then a humongous ball of fire came out of nowhere and hit the barrier, shaking a few of the ten and interrupting their enchantment.

"Don't stop chanting!" Anukis screamed. "Stand up, and fight!"

Nathaniel quickly called for Tris, and asked him to bring his phone. He dialed the emergency number and as predicted, someone instantaneous picks up the phone.

"Elder Diomedes. We have an emergency."

Again, another fireball came out of nowhere and this one is bigger than the other.

"The tar creature... it's here at the Fortress of Scorpio."
