Chapter 9: CHAPTER 9
It was already midnight, the mansion is so quiet, everyone is asleep except for a little girl who's now cautiously walking down the stairs to prevent the other from waking up.
With intense gaze she scanned the first floor of the mansion, there's nothing suspicious there. With light footsteps, she descended down the stairs without a sound. When her eyes glance at the bottom of the door, she quickly dashed towards it when she felt something. The moment she opened it, she saw a man standing with tobacco on his mouth.
"Hello there little SCARLET, I expect that you still haven't forgotten your real master." He said with a grin.
"I-Yes, let's talk outside m-master" Scarlet said with a pounding heart.
"Why outside? We can talk while sitting on those chairs inside." Scarlet flinch at his suggestion.
"No! I-"
*SLAP*
The impact of the slap the man had given to Scarlet made her mouth bled, the fragile little girl's face turned immediately red. She fell down on the floor, after a few seconds she spit out the blood in her mouth together with her tooth.
Scarlet felt the pain but she quickly dismisses it, she needs to get these men out of the house. She needs to distract them.
"How dare you say no to me, you piece of shit. This was your idea in the first place. I agreed because I like beating you up to go with your plan. So how rich was that beautiful baroness? I heard about your great acting while living here." The man looked at Scarlet with menacing eyes "You can't possibly expect a bastard orphan like you to have a family, you belong to me." After saying that he grab her hair and pulled it closer to him.
"You belong to me, only me, got it!?" Scarlet nodded unwillingly.
"My lord, there are many antiques inside the Baroness' attic." One of the men said on his back.
"H-how did you know that?" Scarlet asked with a frightened face.
"How else? We've been infiltrating this rundown mansion for a week now."
The man said while yawning as if he's bored. He was the noble who beat up Scarlet that day when Blaine and Arabella were at the restaurant.
"Now, Max let's go and meet my Baroness." These words that Scarlet heard made her slap the man's hand that's still pulling her hair.
"We can just take their stuff and go, you don't have to waste your time with those people." She said with trembling hands.
"Oh my, looks like our little max has grown fond of that Baroness. How dare you! You filthy orphan!" Scarlet quickly crossed her arms to protect her head from the hands of the nobleman known as Lord Wen. But, before his hand hit her she heard a glass just broke.
Scarlet quickly opened her eyes and saw the bleeding forehead of the man who was about to strike her earlier.
"Get away from her!"
After she heard that someone grabbed her body away from the man.
"Y-you, why are you here? Go back to the Baroness! Run away from here!" she screamed at him with panic visible in her eyes.
"I can't do that, even though you're the cause of this, you can't possibly hope that they'll let you live after taking our stuff and kidnapping my mother, do you?" Blaine said while glaring at the man in front of him. Scarlet was shocked when she heard him.
"HAHAHAHAHAHA this kid is amusing and smart, if you were my son I'll be so proud of you." With bleeding forehead the man appeared to be more ferocious than he was before, he now looks like a monster that will soon kill them with his bare hands.
"Don't worry, I'll never be your son, it's disgusting just having the thoughts of you being my father. My mother was probably blind." Blaine said mockingly which earned a glare from Lord Wen.
"Very well then, Miro, kill these pathetic fools."
Once he gave his orders, the man called Miro who's wearing a black cloak bowed his head. He slowly walked towards the two children.
Blaine quickly reacted and grabbed the nearest object to him, which is-
"Carrots? HAHAHAHAHHA this kid sure is amusing, I never thought I'll-ack!" Blaine didn't let him finish his words and threw two carrots straight to his mouth, which surprisingly fit into his big mouth.
"Get out of my way Miro! I'll be the one to kill this brat!" Lord Wen said furiously and threw his tobacco at the side.
"Scarlet get back to mother and run away!"
"No, I can't leave you! This is all my fault!" Scarlet said with a face full of tears.
"You're ugly when you cry, just protect mother, that's how you'll repay me."
"I'll never forgive you insolent brat!" Lord Wen unsheathe his sword and was about to strike the two children when Blaine grabbed Scarlet's head to duck and kick the nearest chair towards Lord Wen which made him stumble down in front of them.
"Ughh...Miro! Kill them! Fucking kill them!" Lord Wen screamed at the top of his lungs. Blaine took this opportunity to grab Scarlet and run.
Scarlet got shocked the moment their hand touch.
'He's trembling...'
The little kid just like her who looks so brave earlier is trembling while protecting her. Another batch of tears streamed down Scarlet's face.
No one had protected her like this, no one dared to reach their hands on her when she needed help. No one was there when she had to endure all the beatings, the torture, the starvation she had suffered. No one.
"...but you and the Madam did."
Although Blaine heard her, he didn't turn his head and just went straight to the stair and go up.
'Mother...mother...'
With their scared heart and trembling body they run and run where Arabella is.
"STOP THEM! I'll reward you greatly if you give me their heads!" the humiliation Lord Wen had experienced was something he'll never forget. He's a proud man who never experiences humiliation even when he was a kid. He's the cruelest person when he felt humiliated, especially when those suspects are just peasants
"Mother!!" Blaine shouted, but no one answered. They both run towards her room and quickly opened her door. But...
"She's not here..mo-mother..."
The two children felt the sudden loss and emptiness they felt before, they both froze, all of their senses calmed down but inside there's a riot going on. Their hands that's intertwined was getting sweaty from fear and nervousness.
When they opened the door, all they saw was a clean empty bed, it looks like no one had been here. The window is closed and the candles are not lit up. The moon is the only one who gives light inside the room.
"There they are!"
Blaine and Scarlet flinched when they heard the men of Lord Wen had already caught up to them.
"Scarlet, quick let's get inside!" the two of them immediately shut the door once they went inside.
"Help me push this cabinet!" The crying Scarlet quickly helped Blaine and the two children pushed the cabinet to block the door. Just after blocking the door, a sharp sword suddenly pierced the door. Both of them got surprised and took a step back, but the tip of the sword gave a small cut on Blaine's forehead which made him wince.
Blaine quickly roamed his eyes around the room, and then his eyes focused on the closed window.
"Now, now, little kids, you should open this door you know. Give us your heads so we can have our rewards already." The mocking voice came from one of Lord Wen's subordinates. Although they can't see their faces, both of them can imagine the ruthless faces of those men have.
"Scarlet, once I open the window, quickly jump, you'll fall onto the withered leaves I gathered earlier. I'm so sorry that I won't be able to protect you after this. Please live and find mother, be safe always."
To Scarlet ears, it seems like Blaine is saying his final goodbye to her. She can't leave him, she's indebted to him, although she grew up without any role models, she knew how to repay someone when they've done you a favor. But, this is not just being indebted, she already considers Blaine as family, she can't leave him. Scarlet's determined eyes surfaced.
"As if!"
Scarlet's reply surprised Blaine, he looked at her with troubled eyes.
"We're coming in now kids!" their eyes widen when the door suddenly explodes. Blaine blocked the debris that was about to hit Scarlet's head with his body.
"Your heads are mine!"
Blaine tightened his grip on Scarlet's body and shut his eyes.
'Mother!'
"You bastards! What do you think you're doing to my children!"
