Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Harvey

I saw the date on the calendar in my study room. One of the dates had been marked with red ink. Some letters were written on it.

LUNA'S HOMECOMING

I smiled. After having been waiting for six years, I finally could meet her. My Luna. The one who had destined to be the love of my life, The Alpha. The Luna would be the mother of our Sableclaw pack. And the one I've been longing for these years.

She was being kept in a safe house for now but I would meet her soon when she turned eighteenth in a few months.

However, I was really curious about what she looked like now. The only times I saw her was when the Moon Goddess told me who is my Luna through a dream. And that's when I saw her. Her pretty and small face, her petite body, and her caramel hair. Everything was so perfect to the point I couldn't even forget her every day. Not even once.

A guilty confession. I almost imagine fantasizing about her every time. In the morning when I awoke, a whole day, and even before I went to sleep. It was crazy how much amount my mind put into her. And it was even crazier to realize that I had waited for her for so long. Six damn years living with the fantasy of her while all of our pack members getting their mates one by one.

"So how is it? Had you met her?"

Jordan, the Beta of our pack, my right-hand man, asked me with a teasing smile.

I glanced at him with an annoying look.

"You know how it works, Jordan. I should wait until she turns eighteen so I could see her."

He chuckled and leaned on my table.

"It is a shame that you got a way younger Luna, Harvey. The position has been vacant since you became our Alpha. And you still should wait for her to turn older." He went silent for a moment. Seemed like he was thinking about some crazy idea again.

"But hey, I have an idea." He said while grinning.

It never kept me interested in what was going on in Jordan's head. But this time, I thought it wouldn't be wrong to spare him a minute or two to let out that crazy mind. After all, one mad action wouldn't cause much, right?

I arched one of my eyebrows and shot him an expectant look.

"Spit it out."

Jordan smirked, "How about we paid a visit to her? Seeing a bit wouldn't hurt anyone, you know."

I let that thought seep into my mind for a while. That was a pretty interesting idea. I was too tired of keeping her inside my head for six years.

I nodded and Jordan's smirk grew bigger.

And now here we were - standing behind the bushes like thieves while peeping for a girl named Alice. The clock was ticking and it was already past midnight. But I wondered why was she still working in that shabby restaurant.

Poor my Luna. Did she have to work this hard every day? I wouldn't even let her cook or do something so tiring. Let alone working until this late night.

Ah, life surely wasn't fair to everyone.

After playing Thief for thirty minutes, she finally came out from the back door. She had changed her clothes into something more comfortable. A purple hoodie and a pair of jeans that wrapped her long legs nicely. She put on her earphones and strolled to the street when the time was already 1 AM.

I peeked and saw her face. This time, it was real and not some sort of imagination I had in my daydream.

And she was pretty. The prettiest I'd ever seen.

I felt a nudge on my waist and turned over to see Jordan grinning from ear to ear.

"She's pretty, right?" He said.

I bobbed my head. Of course. She is my Luna. The most beautiful one that would be my mate. My heart even froze for a moment when I saw her walking passed us.

And I couldn't let her march alone in this dead night. It was dangerous and the only way to keep her safe was by tailing her until she arrived at her home. Safe and sound.

"We should be following her until she is safely back at home, Jordan," I stated to him.

He agreed and we escorted Alice from behind the bushes. We took so many careful steps so she didn't know two muscular men were following her.

She looked over her shoulder and stared at us. Shit, she must hear the rustling sound we'd made.

We both stopped - afraid that we might be getting caught because of this simple mistake. She glanced with a fear coated her face so clearly. I knew it. She was a scaredy cat and hearing some creepy steps at night would indeed look like some scene in a thriller movie.

And to her horror, there was a howling sound coming not far from us. I glanced at Jordan with a confused look.

"Who the hell was that?" I asked him, knowing it must be one of our pack's members trying to have a crazy night this time.

Jordan shrugged his shoulder. We equally didn't know about that one but Alice definitely would be shaking with fear right now. She dashed so fast from us - and went straight to her home without turning her way to other.

How cute.

I giggled like a crazy man and Jordan saw me with a twisted look.

"You're whipped for her, Harvey."

I tried to dodge his words by quickly hiding my reaction and looking away. But we knew it better than anyone. I was head over heels for her. Alice Knox. My Luna.

After running for maybe fifteen minutes, Alice finally arrived at her home. Safely locked behind that creaky old door. Ah, I felt relieved now seeing her come back in safe and sound.

***

The day went by so slowly. The elders were right, I should never met her before the time came. Hell, I even should have paid a visit and stalked her like a creepy man yesterday.

Jordan's idea was terrible.

Because of that night, Alice was stuck in my head for a whole day. I couldn't seem to stop thinking about her, let alone kick her out of my mind. My whole day was distracted by that short moment of seeing her. Everything about her seemed to occupy my whole head. Her petite body, her pretty face, and even her caramel hair.

Ah, my imagination even running wilder now.

I couldn't wait until her arrival here. And that's mean, two weeks more to wait in hopeless despair. Maybe I was the only Alpha who had a miserable love life. I long for my Luna like a hopeless romantic every day.

How ironic was it right? The leader of the toughest pack in this area must be waking up with blue balls every day.

I brushed my face with my palm. I needed some air to freshen up.

I was walking in the backyard of our pack's house when suddenly, Jordan, bolted toward me. I looked at him with a very questionable look. Did his beard on fire? Or maybe his feet were tangled in vines? Why should he sprint like a horse inside the home?

"Harvey, I have a bad news. A real bad one."

Some uneasiness started creeping inside of me. It must be a horrible one if Jordan acted like this because he rarely did. He was the chillest wolf in our pack. But today, he wasn't.

"What's wrong? Ironmaw attacked us again?"

Of course that was my first suspicion. Our pack, Sableclaw, and Ironmaw had been sworn enemies forever. It all started with our great-grandfathers and the feud still goes on until today.

And Ironmaw, although not becoming the toughest, they were indeed the most cunning ones. Being caught up with one of them would only become a pain in the ass. Like a splinter stuck in your thumb.

Jordan shook his head. It was a no then.

"So? What's wrong?"

He gazed at me seriously.

"Edith's dead."

My eyes widened. It was only two words. But it was powerful enough to send me into a frenzy. Edith Knox, the woman who lived with Alice was dead.

"What's going on?" I asked furiously.

"A natural death, accident at home, and cardiac arrest. She had been weak for a long time too. That wolfbane, remember?"

I nodded. Of course, I did remember every detail of it. But that wasn't the problem now. The only thing I was worried about was Alice. How would she face everything alone? Was it even possible for her to stand up straight at the funeral of Edith?

It was crazy. I couldn't stop worrying about her to the point I wanted to rush out to her. Giving her the tightest hug that would console her.

I gave Jordan a serious look.

"We better get moving now."

***

It was awful. I'd always known that Edith was a loner. But I never thought it would go to that far extent. I went to her funeral with Jordan and I saw no one bid the last goodbye to her.

Well, none other than her four relatives.

I tried to figure out how horrible it must be for Alice. Handling and having all of these unfortunate events happen at once.

I walked to the home and saw a familiar face greet me. Jeff Knox, the long-time member of our pack, and also Edith's little brother. Another relief because I realized Alice at least wouldn't be alone today.

"Alpha." He bowed to me.

I nodded lightly.

"Jeff. How is it going? Everything's fine?"

Jeff nodded and guided me inside the house. I quickly scanned the place to find Alice, but my search results in no avail.

"Looking for her?" He asked me quietly.

"Yeah, where is she?"

Jeff shook his head. Maybe Alice needed some time alone. Maybe she was having a breakdown in the bathroom right now. Maybe, just maybe, if she was already mine, I would embrace her in my hug and let her cry out all of her pain.

But it was only a bunch of possibilities without any way to know whether it was true.

I had a small talk with Jeff. About Edith, her death, and of course, Alice.

"So, she will be turning eighteen in two weeks," Jeff stated to me. The fact that I'd already known. Hell, how could I not know when in fact, I'd always count that day to come?

"I know."

"I hope you're ready. She is a little bit tough to handle, Alpha."

I chuckled. Interesting, right? A cute girl with a grumpy attitude? Sign me up.

Speak of the devil, Alice appeared right when we were talking about her. Of course, she was looking for Jeff. Not me. She didn't even know who am I.

She waited, oh so patiently in there. Standing while her eyes looked to the outside. I could see her swollen eyes, she probably had just cried for the whole night and even a mere minutes ago. The tip of her nose went red and her lips looked pale.

Did she even grab something to eat today? I was truly concerned for her. My mate seemed like didn't have any interest in taking care of her personal health.

I stole a few glances at her. And I believed I should be leaving quickly before I couldn't hold myself back from snatching her away.

Patience, Harvey. Only two weeks left and she will be yours.

"Please take care of her. I'll pick her up as per contract."

Jeff nodded. An obedient gamma if I might say.

And I stride my way out passed her. Only a moment we'd been standing close to each other. Only a few seconds but why it felt like an eternity? I could feel my world stop revolving and the only thing that mattered was her. Alice who was standing beside me.

Again, I looked at her for a few beats and quickly turned away before she realized I was becoming a creepy visitor who staring at her.

A strange feeling seeped into me. It was the first time I was so close with her and my heart jumped out of the excitement. The wolf inside me howled like a dog in mating season. He was so happy that he finally could meet his mate after a long time.

"I want her, Harvey! I want her!" He screamed inside of my head.

Patience, you little dog. We should be taking baby steps for her to open up.

And I could not stop myself to not smiling like an idiot when I was leaving her house.

I, Harvey Adkins, the Alpha of the Sableclaw pack, a hundred percent whipped for her.
