Chapter 5: Finally Free

Running down the long stone hallway, I finally see light at the end of the path. As I approach, I can see a figure of a man is standing in the middle of it. "I don't believe that..." Before he can finish is sentence I slash at his head with the gladius I stole from the guard.

He ducks back avoiding the blade and waves his hand at me with a menacing look, three Firebolts fly towards me as I try to doge back, but the explosion from the blast sends me crashing backwards into the wall before landing on my back.

From the potency of the mana in the spells he is using, it seems that he is only a Bronze Tier mage at best. Unfortunately without magic, even a bronze tier mage was a challenge.

Flipping to my feet and dodging backwards another three Firebolt's blast where I had just been just standing. I switch the short sword to my left hand and draw the three foot long silver hilted Leaf Blade in my right. As I draw it it turns white and the word Arondite appears engraved on the blade.

A slight smile escapes my stone cold expression. Now that I look closely, the man who opposes me greatly resembles a butler. "You killed the master." He snarls, "Die you insignificant muck spawn!" He shouts as he lashes out with a small blast of lightning.

Holding Arondite In front of me, It attracts the lighting to it, dissipating it as soon as it touches the blade. Getting within striking distance, I slash with the gladius which he deflects with a magic shield. I flawlessly follow up with a 360 degree turn bringing Arondite around with me in a backhand slash, tearing right through the shield, and removing the mans head.

Without wasting a second, I head outside and begin to look around. Luckily, I see two fine black horses that were likely brought by that butler. Score! I think and genuinely smile for the fist time in years freedom is finally mine. It's a good thing that the butler panicked and used Shock Dart, if he had used Firebolt again it would have been trouble for me.

I untie the first horse and tie the second one to the saddle of the first one, and ride off east to put some distance between the enemies and I. After riding for a few hours, avoiding military barricades and soldiers I can't take any more and need to rest.

The sun is setting, and I don't know how much more of this I can take. Plus the sun is setting, If I don't sleep soon, Riding tomorrow will be impossible. After riding through the hilly terrain, I finally find a small clearing to rest. After tying up the horses, I climb high into the tree which I tied my horses up, and lay down in a bunch of branches that were close together. "Well sleeping in odd places for four years is actually useful." I mutter to myself.

After lying there for a while, I begin to drift off to sleep when faint rustling noises come from the nearby brush. I look down and see a small figure dart out from the brush and towards my horses. I leap out of the tree from around 20 feet, and land right behind the cloaked figure, as he/she tries to untie my horses. I then strike her with the side of my hand in a chopping motion just behind the neck, knocking him/her unconscious.

I then pull back the hood to find a girl, around my age. She has short Raven black hair, pale skin, and her build much resembles that one would expect to see in a assassin. After carefully searching her to make sure she is unarmed, I reach into the horses pack, and luckily find some rope. Eureka! I pull out a thin yet sturdy rope which I use to tie her to the base of the tree.

After tying her to the tree, I sit down on the ground in front of her waiting for her to wake up. Around 30 minutes later, she finally stirs and comes to. "Where am I?" She asks groggily.

"Who are you? Why did you try to steal my horses? And why should I let you live?" I ask with a stone cold face

"What did you do to me? As she looks all over for signs of abuse.

Growing weary, I draw the gladius and slice her cheek. "Answer the questions and you will get a painless death."

Blood now flowing out of the wound, she snarls "My name is Historia, no second or last name. I was stealing your horses to sell them, that's all."

After observing her for a few minutes, I don't see any reason she has to lie. "As promised your death will be swift." I begin to raise my blade prepared to swing.

"Wait, don't kill me, I can be useful to you." She desperately pleas.

"How?" I ask stopping the blade at her neck. Mildly relieved I might not need to murder her in cold blood.

"I have a job, it pays really well, I can't do it alone. We can work together and share it 50/50." She spits out obviously begging for her life.

"80/20." I reply calmly.

"Like hell I a doing 20/80 no 45/55 is the lowest I will go take it or kill me." She obviously ticked off and needs the money more than almost dying.

"Deal," I then begin climbing into the tree to get some shut eye when she gets annoyed.

"Aren't you going to untie me?"

I continue climbing. "Nope."

"I taught we are partners." She says obviously getting irritated.

"If you wanted to be set free should've added it to the deal." I state as I finally reach were I was laying earlier. After a few minutes of ignoring her ranting, I finally close my eyes and drift off to sleep.
