Chapter 2: (2)the silence
"Ashley" it was her mother's calm voice that woke her up from her trance...."Ash, dad will be home soon, just eat, okay"
With a sigh, Ashley picked fer spoon and started eating the mushroom soup and bread.
Mushroom soup was something that dad preferred over a meal in a five star hotel.
'Simplicity', was his character. Ash felt a burning sensation in her chest which was nothing due to the hot soup, it was the memories.After all it was this mushroom soup dinner party that brought mum and dad close.
She remembered her dad saying "When I just started my band at the age if 19, me and my friends, we all were enthusiastic and reckless, so we crossed all our limits in order to save money, eating once in two days, sleeping in one room to avoid the expense of renting more rooms...etc. etc..... its just the difference between knowing that life isn't easy and understanding that life isn't easy... and it was actually fun, untill the day I met your lovely mother." She smiled to herself while sipping her soup. Afterall, she recalled her dad receiving an elbow in his stomach by his 'lovely wife' for being stupid around his kids.
The rest of the meal went in silence. There was only the sound of sipping, chewing and clinking of cutlery against bowls and plates.
After finishing the last of the desert, she realised that everyone was silent, a silence which is never found in this home especially with her sister, who's always upto accomplishing her everyday's ambition of creating a scene, that is to say a different scene every different day. But tonight seems to be different, although she is only six years of age, she quite understands the tension and anxiety, so she is also quiet under the gloomy pressure which is saying something for a cheerful and carefree girl like Grace.
Once the silence becomes unbearable, Olivia reaches out for empty dishes and scrambles up from her seat, moving towards the kitchen to clean the dishes.
Inside the kitchen its a plain sight with super hygienic status, the kind one finds in a hospital. Wallpapers of cute and beautifull lilacs fill the walls. In short it is Mrs Reece's perfect kitchen.
Once the dishes are done sge calls the girls to bathe and be ready for bed, she quickly geys Grace done with her bathing session n dresses her up in a violet pyjamas with smilies printed on it. She looks sleepy so Mrs Reece takes her to bed whilst Ashley goes through her bath.
All the activities are general and familiar yet there exists a continuous silence which no one tries to break.
