Chapter 4: Attempt

Alexander watched as his parents left the living room, carrying the little girl into his room. He followed them, running up the stairs, worried about Miss. He recalled his conversation earlier with her... It was about the strangest thing he has ever experienced.

"What's your name?" he asked, averting his gaze.

"Miss" the girl smiled, obviously shy, a trait that seemed to irk him.

"I'm Alexander"

For a moment, she was just silent. Her shy smile disappeared, her gaze became blank and she grabbed his shoulder, pulling him close until she could whisper into his ear.

"Beware, little Alexander." she whispered "You will spark the end of Silverstar."

Alexander realized he stopped on his way up the stairs. Remembering what Miss said sent shivers down his spine. He shook his head and continued on his way, trying to decipher what Miss was trying to say. He paused. Was there even anything to decipher?

He entered his room. His parents were checking on Miss, wondering why she would faint.

"Are you alright, little one?" his mother asked, offering to take his hand "She will be okay. She will be with the gods."

Alaster looked up at his wife. He felt a sense of alarm rise from his core and all of a sudden, he felt the need to keep watch on the little girl. However, with another council meeting nearing, he glanced at Alexander and hoped he would suffice.

"I will be downstairs." his wife said and left the room.

"Alexander." he muttered, making sure he wouldn't be heard outside the room "I need to go somewhere and I need you to keep watch on Miss. Will you do it for me?"

After what happened in the living room, Alexander hesitated. However, he knew he had to be brave. Perhaps it would not be the worst thing to know why she told him such things. Alaster was expecting an answer and Alexander just nodded.

"Good man." Alaster praised "Please watch her."

Alaster left the room. Alexander heard muffled voices outside then his father yelled goodbye. He sat near his bed, watching the girl sleep. Her red hair was covering her face. For once, he was intrigued about her. He had never seen anyone with red hair or brown eyes. Everyone had blue eyes and dark brown hair. If they were made in the image of the gods, who did they fashion her from? Who did she look like if she didn't look like the gods?

Miss rolled on the bed, brushing off the hair on her face, revealing her lightly tanned face. It was another thing intriguing about her. Did she spend much time near the sea? She was so unusual he felt uncomfortable around her.

He leaned closer and poked the girl's cheeks... then again... and again.  He stopped. What was he doing? He hated people, let alone touching them.

"What?" he heard the girl mutter groggily as she got up.

She looked lost. She sat on the bed and was surprised to see him. She stood and wandered around the room, muttering something foreign.

"Hey, little guy." she said, kneeling in front of him, as if she was a grown up "Do you know where this is? Where are we?"

Alexander was confused. What's happening to her? Why is she acting like my parents when we attend parties?

"Are you okay?" she asked when he wasn't responding.

He swatted her hand away and stood. "Are YOU okay?"

"Wait... what?"

Alexander walked away, feeling the eyes of Miss follow him. He heard a thud. Looking over his shoulder, he saw Miss passed out once more on the floor. He sighed and walked to the kitchen to tell his mother. After what just happened, he felt the urge to distance himself from her... no matter how much his father would be disappointed that he left his post.

He entered the kitchen and told his mother that Miss woke up and fainted once more. His mother smiled and told him to keep watch in the kitchen while she watches over Miss. Alexander gladly agreed and took the responsibility.

It was not long when his father returned. When he saw Alexander in the kitchen, he immediately rushed to the bedroom.

"What are you doing? Drop that, now!" Alexander heard his father yell.

He heard metal hit the floor, alarming him, making him rush up the stairs. His father was protecting Miss and his mother looked infuriated, telling him the little girl was dangerous.

"Alexander, take the knife! Don't let your mother have it!"

Alexander saw the knife lying on the floor under the bed. He slid past his mother and crawled under the bed, grabbing the knife. Once he got out, he ran past his mother before she could grab him.

"Alexander!" his mother yelled "I'm doing this for your own good!"

Alexander distanced himself from his mother, having a newfound fear for her. He hid behind his father, who was now trying to calm his mother down.  Alaster finally succeeded after a short while and he and his wife both left the room, heading to their bedroom to talk.
