Chapter 60: Are we there yet?
When the three boys heard the knights outside scream bandit attack, they took a peak at the window of the carriage. When they looked outside they saw that they were already surrounded by a dozen people pointing their crossbows at their party.
A man who looked like he was the leader pf the group, stepped up from the behind the line of crossbows.
"Hey we do take offense if you call us bandits. We're mercenaries you know, mer.ce.na.ries. We're not bandits okay?" The man who looked like the leader of the so called mercenaries, smiled after sighing.
"So your not bandits, but mercenaries, then what? Why are you pointing your crossbows at us? If your not here to rob us, then what do you want?" One of the knights asked a bit confused of the situation, but he still had his guard up.
"Like I said were mercenaries, and right now we're in the middle of a job. We just need to acquire one of those refugees your escorting... Oh don't worry we will compensate you, how about 1 gold coin for each of you. That should be ten times the amount you'll be getting for this sh*tty escort job. So what say you dear knights?"
Two of the knights started to hesitate, but the last one made his war horse move forward to the block the front of the crossbows aiming at his companions.
"We are noble knights of the Divine Lord's Empire, how dare you try to bribe us! We will not betray the ones we promised to protect, this is my... No our knights honor!" When the other two heard the rallying cry of their leader, they stopped hesitating and had there war horses advance blocking the carriage from the crossbows.
The leader of the mercenary group smiled at the reaction of the knights. "Oh too bad then, I wanted to do this without shedding any blood, but a job is a job." The leader snapped his fingers and the crossbowmen backed away. The knights seeing this action got even more confused, were they allowing them to move on?... No based on what the leader of the mercenary group said, they plan to finish the job no matter the cost.
When the leader of the mercenary group saw the hesitating movements of the knights he snickered. Even though the knights were wearing full plated armor and their faces were covered by their helms, their body language betrayed them, showing their confusion for the leader to see.
"Don't be too shocked, obviously we wont shoot with arrows. Our low quality crossbows wont be able to penetrate your sturdy full plated armor. So will smash you to death with this guy." The leader of the mercenary group made a hand signal, and after a moment, some nearby trees started to fall. What came out of the fallen trees was a giant of a man, wearing leather armor, he stood there a towering five meters tall. With his bulging muscles and giant mace, those two things put together alongside his height made him look even bigger.
The knights were perplexed at the sight of such a fearsome looking opponent. The boys in the carriage were in awe and fear of the creature who was about to take their lives.
"Last chance, just give us the boy named Lin and you can be on your way." The mercenary leader suggested once more. The two knights who were hesitating from the start looked at each other and nodded. They then stood by the side of the mercenaries, their leader looked at them dumbfounded by their actions.
"What the hell is the meaning of this?! You wish to discard your knight's honor!" The two knights who heard their leader couldn't respond, and shamefully lowered their heads.
The mercenary leader started laughing at the funny scene played out by the knights. "Hahaha, see that mister knight, even your subordinates abandoned you. So how about you just give up and hand over the boy called Lin."
The knight leader clenched his teeth, he couldn't do anything. He wanted to uphold his honor and pride as a knight, but in the face of the betrayal of his subordinates he couldn't do anything. The three boys seeing their dire situation, started to think of ways to escape. Jason couldn't stand it anymore, went down from the carriage and stood beside the knight.
"Hey you don't need to feel at a loss, bastards like them are not worth it. Don't worry even if they betray you, I will stand by your side." When the knight saw the boy with red hair stand by his side with no weapon at hand, simply wearing some ragtag clothes, he couldn't help but smile. Even in this dire life threatening situation, the boy stood tall courageous and bold.
With no weapon at hand the boy, the knight didn't even know of, stood by the side of a stranger and is trying to protect the boy called Lin which he just met a few moments ago. What compassion wasn't this the ideal he as a young knight once had. With newfound courage, the knight passed his sword to the boy, and readied his lance.
"We face them together then boy." Jason feeling the weight of the sword the knight gave him responded with a nod.
"Okay then are you done saying your goodbyes? Well then I'm sorry but I did warn you. Kill them!" When the leader of the mercenary group gave the order the five meter tall man swung down his mace.
Jason seeing the incoming attack was directed at him, rolled to the side. When the mace hit the ground, the ground actually shook by the force of the strike. Seeing the strength of the opponent the knight dismounted and released his war horse, which ran to a different route towards the Divine Lord's Empire.
The knight tried to stabbed the five meter tall man, but couldn't penetrate his armor of muscle. The stab he did with all his might only resulted in a tiny wound. The giant was ready to smash his mace onto the knight. Even though he could see the incoming attack, the knight was unable to move fast enough to dodge due to the heavy armor he was wearing.
The knight tried to use his lance to block the strike, but knowing the strength of the giant before him, he knew that his was a futile effort. When Jason saw what was about to happen dashed forward and slashed at the giant, yet it didn't even faze the giant. The attack was now in motion, unable to stop the giant from attacking, Jason couldn't help but avert his eyes.
BOOM!
When Jason heard the terrible sound of the mace hitting something, he opened his eyes and tried to look at the aftermath of the attack. He was expecting to see a body flattened to a meat paste, but what he saw was surprising.
The mace of the giant that was suppose to hit the knight was stopped by one hand of a yawning youth. When Jason saw the youth he was sure he was the fellow sleeping in the carriage, but this time the hood wasn't blocking his face.
The boy who held the mace of super strong giant, was a spiky white haired boy. He was yawning as his one hand tightly clasped the mace of the giant. The giant looked like it was trying to raise his mace, but he couldn't lift it away from the grasp of the spiky haired boy.
The spiky haired boy suddenly clenched the hand that was holding the mace and shattered the mace's head into dust. The giant then staggered backward, and fell on his bottom because of the sudden release.
The spiky haired boy faced the mercenary group slightly opening his eyes, the eyes he had were of different color.
The boy then while yawning rubbed his eyes, and spoke to the startled group he asked. "Are we there yet?"
