Chapter 2: The Piano Key (Re)

On the moving bushes to her left appeared a bunch of little bugs talking and laughing with each other. There were five of them. Two males and three females. When the girl in the lead spotted her, a smug look fell on her face.

"Oh, if it isn't Luna the giftless little bug," she mocked. Her crew laughed with her.

Luna turned red with embarassment. It was Kariza her neighbor. Their houses were not that close but they live in the same circle. Everyone in the neighborhood were excited, gossiping about gifts here and there, the parent fairies boasting their little bugs around. But amidst all the merrying, the news about one little bug with no gift has also spread.

"I'm sure that next time when we turn twelve, she'll be called the 'flightless little fairy!" She mocked some more and laughed louder. But some of her friends laughed awkwardly and were not amused. They knew she's taking her joke too far.

"That's not true, Kariza!" Luna shouted back and stood up, her hands balled and staring angrily at her.

"Oh really?" she asked raising a brow. "A key would appear as early as five days after a little bug turned five or at the latest a month. But you're almost three months past. What would you call that?"

"I... " She lowered her head. She has no proof to show that she has a gift, but she would never accept to be called giftless, much worse flightless. "I'm still working on it."

"Ha! No matter how hard you concentrate, if there's nothing for you, then nothing will appear." Then Kariza opened her dominant left hand to show her. A key appeared. Luna looked up and stared in awe. She took the key with the other hand and inserted it in the keyhole by her chest. The faries called their chest the "Treasure Chest." Every little bug since birth have a hole above their heart. When the key appears in their hands after they turned five, they would use it to open the chest. After inserting and twisting the key, it will then serve as a handle by pulling it to open the chest like a drawer. It's like a small pocket where the precious gifts are found.

Kariza proudly pulled her Treasure Chest open. A soft light shimmered then faded. She took out two tiny glass circles that looked like marbles. Inside one was a miniature violin and a silver microphone on the other. She place each on her hands and will them to manifest. The marbles shimmered and in its place were a real-life violin and microphone. Her gifts were classical music and singing.

"See?" Kariza picked them up and raised them to make Luna jealous. Luna stared wide-eyed and open-mouthed.
