Chapter 79: The life of an adventurer isn't easy (part 2)

"OUT!"

The infuriated woman pointed her index finger at the entrance and demanded.

"We are no longer a party. They were the ones who started throwing things around, so charge them for whatever it costs. Goodbye."

"You...!"

Finlay used this chance to put his arm over Constance's shoulders and walk out, leaving the pair of stunned siblings behind.

"DON'T YOU FUCKING TO DARE LEAVE JUST LIKE THAT YOU...!"

*thump*

Solange's body trembled, and she shouted after the evacuating pair, grabbing a chair with the full intention of throwing it at them, but the piece of furniture she lifted ended up increasing in weight and returning to the floor against her intentions.

"... what the... big bro?!"

The furious water mage glared at the soon-to-be projectile and ended up gasping in disbelief when she noticed that her very brother was pushing it down.

"Why are you taking their side...?! Eh...? EH?!"

"..."

The girl cried out, but the archer shook his head decisively and motioned with his chin at something in the back – and when the water mage checked out what was in the back, her eyes widened, and she let go of the chair on her own.

"Sir Kazimir, we're deeply sorry for causing trouble in the guild – it will not happen again."

After making sure that his sister would not try to stir up more trouble, Amo let go of the chair and turned around so he could bow his head and apologize to the burly man with steel-gray hair.

The guild master of the adventurer's guild in person.

"You were rather loud, but thanks to that, I could figure out what's going on.."

Kazimir smiled and nodded back at the young archer and his sister, who became intimidated and shimmied her way toward her brother, reaching out and holding onto his sleeve.

"We apologize for causing a scene, and of course, we will compensate for the broken dishes, so please consider leaving the case at that."

The brown-haired young man glanced at his sister and nodded at her reassuringly before focusing back on the burly man at least twice his size and requesting in a tense but polite voice.

Since the guildmaster showed up and was dealing with the case, no other staff member dared to interfere, and the other adventurers were all holding their breath, interested in what direction the event would go.

In the past two years, the reputation of the burly guildmaster began to worsen – only that it didn't mean that he lost respect. The other way around. Nowadays, his involvement with the dark guild, as well as various scandals and recently exposed corruption, was known to everyone even remotely interested in the world around them. That alone should crush any and all respect the others held towards Kazimir... Should being the keyword here.

The thing was, two years prior, the guild master of the Grand Herbal's adventurer's guild completed the requirements to move from being an A rank to an S rank adventurer, therefore becoming one of the most precious resources of the kingdom and receiving almost complete immunity in exchange for pledging his loyalty to the king.

From that point, no matter what he did, Kazimir would stand above the law and would not be punished for anything unless he committed treason or attempted regicide.

"That was my intention from the start. Say... You two are Amo and Solange, aren't you?"

Kazimir nodded and looked between the pair of siblings, smiling jovially at the sight of their faces shocked because of someone like him knowing their names.

"Y-yes, that's right, sir."

Amo gulped down his saliva and nodded, exchanging confused looks with Solange.

"One of my staff informed me that you have been interested in the preparatory quest connected with localizing and eradicating the potential monster village believed to sprouting out within the far-eastern region of our kingdom."

"Yes. That's correct, sir."

Kazimir motioned his head towards the counter and said calmly, making Amo nervously gulp down his saliva and nod in confirmation.

"We could not accept it back then because both our leader and fourth party member... at the time... refused to participate."

Despite the nervousness caused by the pressure the guild master was putting on him, Amo figured out where Kazimir was going with the conversation, so he added on his own.

"That's right, that's exactly what I've been told~"

The burly man's smile became wider as he hummed, satisfied with the flow of the conversation.

"It would appear that your party split up, and the obstacle is gone. Are both of you still willing to take part in the preparatory quest? Unfortunately, we aren't getting the expected number of parties joining in, so we are going to get rid of the 4 members requirement for this particular quest. Are you still interested?"

Kazimir asked, tilting his head to the side and observing the pair of siblings with an amused look in his eyes.

""Yes!""

Amo and Solange changed lightning-fast glances and declared at the same time with almost no delay.

"Hahaha~! That's the spirit! Go and officially enlist to take part in the preparatory quest then. I'm looking forward to seeing your future achievements."

The guild master let out a joyous laugh, reaching out and patting the sibling's shoulders at the same time before walking behind the counter and disabling the door leading to the staff-only area.

"..."

The archer and the water mage hurriedly put the table and chairs back in place and began to clean up the broken dishes, which gained them a few glances of approval from the guild staff members – although their aim wasn't to score some brownie points with them at all.

"...fuck... I thought that preparatory quest would be a good idea until he coerced us into joining..."

Solange scuttled over to her brother and whispered, biting her lips.

"Same."

Amo nodded while carefully picking up the sticky pieces of the broken mug.

"It seems that the rumor about the monster village quest being only a front for Kazimir gathering a private force under his control isn't as farfetched as I thought."

He added, lowering his head to hide a bitter expression from the onlookers.

"We're fucked... unless you have an idea how to turn it around...?"

The water mage sighed, biting her lips before freezing up with her hand on the toppled bowl and glancing at her brother with a hopeful look in her eyes.

"...I do, actually..."

"~!"

Amo nodded, and Solange perked up, feeling better even without hearing the details.

"It's nothing much... but since we're fucked either way, I think that we can try to get as much as we can from the preparatory quest, train the hardest we can but show off only minimal results, and lay the lowest we can. You know the rumors – there are parties that, despite taking part in the preparatory quest, aren't even allowed to take part in the search for the monster village because of miserable results. That's our way out. We get stronger in the shadows enough to travel on our own and then leave Grand Herbal and move to another city. With enough time, Kazimir will forget about nobodies like us."

"Pffft. And here I thought you were smarter than me – but here you are, coming up with the same idea that I did."

The archer revealed, and the water mage snickered at him.

"The complexity of the plan isn't important here – whether it fails or not depends on our acting skills... or maybe we will end up as failures for real because it will be too hard... who knows?"

Amo smirked back, and both of them stood up with a clear idea of their next move.
