Chapter 1: The Particle Accelerator

"Deep breaths." I tell myself. "Deep breaths." I have five minutes until I'm supposed to be onstage for dad's speech. People are rushing all around me, making final, minor calculations.

"How the hell are you not nervous, Linh?" Cisco asks me. He's one of my dad's higher ranking employees. With shoulder length, black, slightly greasy hair, tanned skin, and brown eyes, he's one of the few people who talk to me like a person, and not as a famous physicist who happens to be the daughter of the Harrison Wells.

I laugh slightly. "Trust me, I may look calm on the outside, but on the inside, I am going crazy." And I am. Everything had to go perfect.

The accelerator was specifically set to go off tonight, December 11, 2013, because there is going to be a storm with a bolt of lightning that strikes the CCPD; CSI Division. It has to be there because Barry Allen, the future Flash, will be there, at that time, watching the accelerator on the news.

"Linh, you coming?" Dad calls from the door. "Yep!" I reply. I walk out of the cortex, smoothing my navy blue dress. Doing that, I almost trip over my black heels.

Dad manages to catch me. "Thanks." I say, smiling up at him. "Of course." Dad tells me, giving me a side hug.

Down the hall, up the elevator, through another hall, and finally we step outside. Cameras immediately start flashing, trying to get a glimpse of the two most genius scientists of the century. This century anyway.

-

"Good evening. My name is Harrison Wells. And tonight, the future begins. The work my team does here will change our understanding of physics. We'll bring about advancements in power, advancements in medicine, and trust me, that future will be here faster than you think."

Everyone starts applauding, including me.

My eyes are drawn to the audience where they land on a boy and a girl. Barry Allen and Iris West. The future Flash, and his future wife.

I manage to take my eyes away from them and go back to focusing on dad's speech.

"The particle accelerator will be the future of our world. With it, we will be able to change lives. Your lives. Thank you." He finishes.

Everyone applauds again as I step up to the podium.

"Thank you all. Now, as my father said, this accelerator will change lives." I continue speaking, giving the basic rundown of how it works.

When I finish, everyone applauds again. Louder this time. I hear some hollars and some whistles.

Stepping off the stage, I finally relax. The most difficult part is done. But the real task is just beginning.

-

Cisco, Caitlyn, Ronnie, and all of the other employees are around the main desk.

"Dr. Wells, the accelerator is primed and ready for particle injection."

Dad smiles. "Thank you Cisco." He steps up to the screen where we turn it on. "I feel like I should say something profound, but all I can say is that I feel as if I have been waiting for this day for centuries."

He smiles at me, and I give a small smirk back. The pun he made was awful. Puns are the lowest form of humor. But to everyone else, it's not a pun, so I say nothing.

"Now, without further ado." He takes a deep breath and takes a step forward to the screen. He turns the virtual knob, and the accelerator turns on.

Everyone cheers as Cisco says, "I feel like there should be a loud bang."

Ronnie laughs at that. "If there was a loud bang, we would all be in trouble.

"Take that from the guy who helped build it." Caitlyn says, leaning her head on his shoulder.

We all celebrated for about 45 minutes. Popped some champagne. I didn't take part in the champagne, I am only 20 after all.

When those 45 minutes were up, there was a loud bang.

"Was that-"

"A loud bang? Yep." Ronnie says, nervously.

"Cisco, Caitlyn, Ronnie, go see if you can shut it off from the pipeline. Everyone else, get out!" Dad shouts.

I run to the assisting desk trying to shut it off, halfheartedly. My fingers fly across the keyboard, but all for nothing. The walkie talkie next to dad beeps and Cisco's voice comes through.

"Ronnie did it. He redirected the explosion to go up rather than out."

"Well done. I'll be down there in a moment."

Instead he stays. We hug.

"It's going to be fine. We'll be fine."

"I know."

We stay like that until the explosion rips us apart. I am thrown to one wall, dad to the other. I try and brace myself with my hands, but in doing so, I hear a crack. Pain erupts out of my left hand.

I see dad across from me, laying on the floor, unconscious. I slowly try to pick my way across open electrical wires on the floor, but the pain is too much. I black out.
