Chapter 2: Fairbreeze Village

Magic… As beautiful as it is dangerous… Magic is the source of our culture, for we have given everything for it… we gave up our past lands… our past glories… to hide our past shame… through the use of arcane we learned how to harness raw power… but the price we paid for such power… was more than we could bare…But… how could we have known… that it could be… so addicting!

Day 2

[Layla Sunstriker! {see comments at the end for picture} What have we told you about riding on that "gnoll"! He's not some dog you can ride about for fun! He is an important experiment and one that could even hurt you if you are not careful! What would your mother think if she saw you doing this or worse other Elves…] said the Layla caretaker.

[ Sigh… look here "Alanus Boldspell" I'm six years old now! So, there's nothing to worry about! He's been magical spell bound to me since the day he was born! The eclipse even helped fortify the spell! There's no way he can hurt me! Look, I'll show you!]

Little Layla then comically slapped poor Lanthios across the head, A gnoll who was twice her size! She then said [See even when I slap him across the head, he does nothing! Not even Growl!]

Worried Alanus said [what does you being six years old have to do with anything? Also didn't we already teach you that the more silent a beast is the more dangerous it is? Who knows what's going on his mind now that you slapped it!]

Lanthios thoughts: {see comment at end for picture}

{???.. what she hit me… I didn't feel a thing... I mean she is six years old with tiny hands… Also, I'm a thirty-year-old man! How the hell would a little slap like that even hurt? If anything, it was adorable…

Sigh, is this what my life has come to now! Taking care of brats and to be nothing but a slave to a baby so she can suck out my magic juice? To make things worse if anything happens to "said" brat... I'm a dead man! If she gets hurt, I get hurt but not the other way around!

It's really inconvenient when you're a slave to a curious child, who likes to get into dangerous situations. But... as far as reincarnation is concerned it could be worse… At least when I died as a 30-year-old fat virgin man living in my basement, I got to be reborn in my favorite fantasy world, war of Warcraft! Shit, I still remember when I was first born into this world!

Covered in blood and in the muck… damn that was some sick gunk! But it was the best start to a novel if we were writing one… But on the other hand, it was very traumatizing! If I wasn't an old bachelor but a young man, I probably would have lost it in that situation... I'm also grateful I wasn't reborn as an ugly orc or troll with back problems!

But, my favorite underused race, the gnoll.. But it would have been nice if the person who adopted me was a night elf and not a blood elf... But I should still be considering myself lucky that I wasn't raised in a gnoll society or any other horde race for that matter or I'll probably be dead.} Lanthios pauses thinking for a second before continuing.

{I mean, hell if I was with the orcs I'd probably be eaten, with the undead I would… definitely be eaten, as for the trolls I'll be used in some voodoo shit, while the "cow" people I'll... Probably be fine and better off! But then again... I wouldn't have access to cute blood elf hotties like I do now! Sure, they all look at me in disdain but… it's a start!}

But as Lanthios was lost in his fantasy the caretaker Alanus wasn't as amused and glared harshly at Lanthios, as if warning him not to do anything stupid... Which of course went unnoticed by the latter for his head was filled with thoughts of beauties. Until he felt the ends of his fur begin to heat up!

Quickly jumping to the left while holding onto Layla, he crashed and landed on his back while keeping Layla safe on his stomach, while at the same time growling as he stared upside down at his assailant that just threw a fireball at him!

[ clap, clap, Good, Good, your reaction has improved… and this time you even remember to make sure your master was safe to boot. At least one of you is paying attention!] said Julia with a pleasing expression, while looking annoyed at her daughter.

She then continued to say

[Layla, you can't always depend on him to protect you from everything! Even here in Fairbreeze it's not safe! I thought I taught you that already, you know the trolls are just waiting for us to slip up along with the mindless undead who walk the tainted scar!]

[I know mom... I just… it was a mistake... It won't happen again!] announce Layla proudly

[It better not! You have no idea the lengths I go through day by day just to keep you safe! And I'm not just talking about fighting the troll or the undead! Even my very own are mad that I let you have our best test subject to feed on! If you're not careful they may find an excuse to null your contract with him!] replied Julia sternly

Scared of what her mother just said, Layla inadvertently hugged tight Lanthios arm and said, [ No! They can't have him! He's mine! They can't just take him away!]

[Then don't give them a reason to! Remember only the strong get to keep what's theirs or take what they want! If you can't provide results, then he will be giving to another! After all he wasn't just giving to you for food but to see if he can also increase your own magical talents. Remember resources are thin at the moment… if you can't keep up... Then another more promising child shall have him.] replied Julia distressingly.

But as they were having their mother daughter moment a guard came running up to report something urgently. Exhausted from the run the guard said [lady Julia, the trolls are attacking one of the caravans heading to Tranquillien in Ghostland's! They are calling for aid!]

Responding to the guard inquiry Julia said [Layla, it looks like I have to go but when I get back, we need to rethink your training! And you mongrel… you will start your magic training in the ways of the paladin! Rejoice for your trainer is Jesthenis Sunstriker, one of my brothers!]

But as Layla looked at the fleeting back of her mother in uncertainty Lanthios placed his arms around her while resting his head on top of hers in some vain hope to comfort the poor child, but little did he know such a simple act would spark a little flame in her heart.
