Chapter 1: Just like my aunts

Bai Yi's POV

In my younger and more vulnerable years, my mother told me a truth universally acknowledged, a girl child belongs to another family and can never be heir and if a woman is to bear that burden then she is to abandon the furs and the frills, the rubies and ribbons and become so hard that the weight of the world is not enough to make her bend. With that truth I have prospered for the last sixteen years, the other family's child, any one of my awards could cause families to offer incense to their ancestors and throw a banquet for days but I have a room full of them. If I should say so, I am a walking success, so you my dear readers should understand my anger at an eighteenth birthday, organized by the said mother filled with frills and ribbons, balloons in blue and all the silly things I have been raised to detest.

The most annoying thing is the cluster of women gushing over the miracle baby, my hateful grandmother running after him, that annoying smile in my father's eyes and the confidence in my mother's shoulders, one that 348 major awards had not been able to instill. I could bear it all if they'd worked a little bit harder to make me feel less like wipes, to be discarded once used but it was my birthday and not one of them cared enough to say happy birthday to me, they only cared about their miracle baby that was born the same day as his sister, as if his intention of replacing me had not been clear enough.

Mrs Song's POV

Everytime I look at my daughter, my heart breaks a little, before she was born I just wanted her to simply be happy but severe complications during delivery, my husband's unwillingness to find someone that would birth him an heir and my in-laws unfeigned disinterest, especially my mother-in-law's hate meant my wishes for my precious baby had changed, Xiaoyi now had no reason to be just happy, she had to be stronger, strong enough to show them that we had a place at the table.

My Xiaoyi won awards locally and internationally, she's smart and beautiful and most importantly she stood tall in the midst of her mates, something her parents were never able to do. My husband, the only son of his parents was raised until he was average, other than his love for me everything was done within the accepted boundary, and he was as proud of our daughter as I was. It is easy though for everyone to only see results, but I had seen her struggles, I saw her even as child go against her base instincts just to be better and I chose to do the same, search for other methods and various ways to ensure that my Xiaoyi doesn't bear this burden alone. Thankfully, I now have a son, born the same day as his sister, he signified rest for my family and finally my precious baby can be a girl again.

Old Mrs Song 's POV

The greatest regret of my life is only having one son, after birthing money wasting things two times in a row, the birth of Chen Lin was libration for me. He was not particularly outstanding but he is my son and that is all that matters. When Chen Lin brought Jing Fei home, my mothers instincts told me nothing good would come of it and I was right as her first birth was another money losing good, to make matters worse, she had injured her body and my son refused to take a new wife. Old Song had almost given inheritance rights to thedarn girl Jing Fei bore but at the last minute, Jing Fei got pregnant again and bore a boy, as if to cover my shame, he was born the same day as the money losing goods and I promise to raise him well.

Writer's POV

I am only documenting and would never insert my feelings into the Song family's story. I have been asked to start the story from the joint birthday and just like that I would start:

The Song family birthday party was lavish, even by the standards of the under rich. The location, the decoration, the lights and even the food, usually a part of the decoration was out of this world. It was to be expected though their dazzling daughter and their new son would become an adult and a one-year old on the same day and all of the attendees acknowledged that the family were winners in life, an accomplished daughter and a son to carry the family name were things to envy but the Song family like all humans, refused to see what they had and had instead started a silent war on inheritance.

The undercurrents of the battle was brought to the front of high society by a splash, everyone turned to look at the pool and froze because Song Bai Chen had fallen into the water and his sister had dove in immediately after him. Old Mrs Song stood by the pool shouting at anyone to save her grandson, whilst Mr and Mrs Song had also jumped in to save their children. Guests eager to get on the good side of the family also dove in and for a while the scene was quite chaotic. Mrs Song finally brought out Bai Chen and CPR was administered, the family quickly drove to the hospital and this was how the birthday party ended.

Bai Yi's POV

I watched Bai Chen toddle towards the water and an evil part of me hoped he fell in and drowned like my two aunts when they were young, but when he actually fell, I realized that I didn't actually hate the kid and jumped in after him. My mum was the first person I saw underwater and she quickly took him out of arms, I guess out of agitation, her leg hit me and the more people that dove into the pool, the more I was hit, I knew I should have honestly learnt how to swim and not hide my fear of water.

As I lay there, slowly sinking to the bottom of the pool I laughed at myself for dying just the same way the aunts I never met had died, pushed underwater by their own mother.
