Chapter 7: The improbable

Unlike what happens in games where a light surrounds the player, here there was nothing; I didn't feel special, nor my wounds healed... I opened the status screen to see the changes since I didn't notice them....

"Title: The Persistent Effect: When the character is fighting for more than 1 hour, he ignores fatigue and enters a state of special lucidity, giving a critical chance of +25%."

The changes were noticeable in practice, although I didn't feel more alive or healthier. The thing is that now that I had gotten used to receiving attacks, I was beginning to sense them, or at least knew how to react to the most obvious ones...

The previously heavy spear was now lighter in my hand, and I no longer lost my breath with every step...

However, the next death of a rat no longer felt so good; it no longer gave me experience points, or rather, I needed to kill 3 rats to gain a paltry 1 per thousand experience...

The effectiveness increased; even the slaughter from the pulpit began to seem monotonous to me. The rats that had terrified me were now just bugs to exterminate; they weren't that scary, and their chances of harming me were very limited, so I reached the end of round 99... Data's voice echoed...

"Round 100 is the last possible round of the coliseum phase; do you want to continue in the coliseum or advance to the next phase?"

I didn't respond right away; with my previous experiments, I knew that I wouldn't start until I said something... I absorbed the essences of the rats from the group of 30 that I had just killed and got off the pulpit. Being next to the entrance had been an advantage; the enemies couldn't run and had to turn to reach me, but what would come out now? 50 rats? 100? A giant rat?

My experience as a player, even if I was a cheater, was that a final round required a final boss. The problem was that there had been 99 rounds with a linear increase in rats. True, they were the same damn bugs, but there were 30 rats...

I walked to the door where I had followed and chose the pulpit of the statue on the left; this left my shield closer to the wall and my spear more freely to the right; however, I did not fit with the distance that was 30 meters; I had time to fit in if necessary...

The door opened...

"GRROOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!"

A strident but powerful roar neighborhood the sand...

Time seemed to pass in slow motion. Heavy, very heavy footsteps echoed. A polar bear-sized rat came out the door...

From the ground to the top of his back, he could measure more than 1.60 meters while on all fours...

"Shit..."

All the advantage that height had given me against normal rats meant nothing now; in fact, it could make me lose a foot or something when my legs were at the height of a jaw the size of a large pot...

The claws the size of baseball gloves left grooves in the sand, and the acceleration was impressive for an animal of its size... I took cover, resting my leg against the statue... 25 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters, 10 meters, 5 meters...

When I could smell the stinking smell of his mouth, I threw my spear forward, aiming at his eye, and jumped...

The spear between my strength and the momentum of the beast penetrated the right eye socket, and my body, in precarious balance, jumped a little towards that same side. In the end, the spear had a leverage effect, and a huge eyeball was torn out by its roots. With a bloop...

The rat screamed, if you can say that... I won't say that she died or that she turned around with murderous fury, amazed by the unknown pain, and out of surprise, it did the most typical thing for a rat: run away...

The giant rat, or the rat queen if you want to call her that, came out in one direction and I came out in the opposite... I was a cheater, not a warrior; don't screw around. Thinking that I would finish her off immediately was too much to expect... I got up like I could and ran away...

I chose the pulpit of the statue at the door as opposed to the one on the right, as it was facing me, not for nothing but because I hoped that with my back to the wall and the reduced vision of the rat king on that side, I would have some chance of surviving. ...

Thinking back, I can say that I sprained my ankle in the fall. I hit the ground, losing my shield, already torn in the meantime. It was a mass of wood that was hardly usable. To seem more heroic, I will say that I ran, although any spectator would have said that I crawled quickly.

It wasn't even a minute, but it was enough. With a spear, my legs fixed and my desire to clear the 100th floor, I waited for the rat, but things would not be so easy... The damn rat did what its species does: stay in the opposite corner, looking at me with a look between apprehension and fear. I think it was the same look I had...

Since the bastard wasn't getting closer, I moved forward little by little, one step at a time. I would tell you it was a glorious scene, but I could hardly hold the spear; I was almost defeated, dragging myself more than advancing.

We were about five meters away, a more than safe distance. The rat squeaked like a cat, its hair standing on end, facing each other, me without skill. The one-eyed rat with the fear of the man on the front... Now it was a question of who would take the first step...

Being the winner of the first move forward, my spear, held with both hands, stabbed his right front leg. It was not a serious wound, but it prevented her from moving anyway.

Not having the shield, I could not dodge its large body at first, and one of its claws reached my left arm. Although, although due to her posture, luckily her mouth did not reach me, I rolled to my right, surrounding it and managed to open a long wound with my spear on her side...

The rat queen advanced forward. I moved to the right in his blind corner, and she jumped... I would tell you that magically, I dodged him, but it wasn't like that. My leg was crushed by her mouth. A horrible pain, unbearable, reached me. My spear pierced its mouth, and the beast from hell released the prey that was my leg... I was not worried about the infection that its yellow teeth would leave; it was just the sensation of a torn leg... My twins were hanging, showing the bone. The blood was gushing...

One of the damn advantages of anatomy is that if a giant rat on its side is eating your leg, it leaves her neck, her body completely at your mercy, fighting to survive and still with the spear in my hand I hit... the spear pierced the neck... but she didn't let go... while I shook myself to continue tearing myself I hit again, this time I crossed her mouth from side to side...

She let me go, I was able to crawl back... the rat queen was bleeding, I was bleeding more...she chose to crush me... It was her mistake... the entire weight of a 300 kilo rat fell on the spear lodging in his body...

In an epic story my spear would have pierced the heart of the beast and it would have died on top of me... but it was worse... the spear only pierced one of her lungs, mortally wounded yes but no imminent death dragged me towards a side without being able to recover my spear while the rat queen's claws tore my shoulder...

With a spear through her lung, it's not like the rat was at her best, she was spitting blood from her mouth, she could barely move with the spear protruding from her body through her back...

I came out from under her body on her right side, between her front and back legs... from there she couldn't scratch me... She couldn't bite me... but I wasn't much better either, I was bleeding to death... it wasn't fast but it was certain that i would not remain conscious for more than two minutes...

I grabbed the rat's hair and pulled myself up. My torn shoulder hurt, and my body was battered after a thousand rats and this damned beast, but I pulled myself up. With pain and effort, at that moment, I reached the top. From above, the spear that protruded from the other part of the body...

The heroic thing would be to say that I broke the protruding part of the spear and stabbed the beast to death... but I had neither the strength nor the way to do that... so I did what I believed could do the most damage and pain to the monster. ... I began to move the tip of the spear and consequently the entire spear in circles, expanding and applying force against the edges so that each time the circle was wider and the pain greater...

The rat shook in her death throes... spitting blood but with enough force to push me away... and for me to fall to the ground... I had no strength to stop me.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS

I know that the combat has developed in a rather dirty way. I had a German Shepherd for many years, and I can guarantee you that fighting a large beast is never a fair fight, no joke ;P. I hope you liked the chapter, don't forget to support the novel. Greetings, your author.
