Chapter 4: Training and promise

A month had passed. They went through rigorous training on basic combat skills.

Their guide was the chief of the magic institution, the strongest mage of Agratha, Azael, and the redheaded woman Tristina who was seen as a hero in the war with the demons ten years ago. She killed one of the most powerful henchmen of the Demon King. Surprisingly, their fighting ability increased dramatically in just a month.

According to Sarila's words, when sent to this world, a lot of things were passed on to the head of Torei's group. Language ability was just one of them.

Haruki was the one with the most insane growth. He'd already know how to use three techniques of previous generations of heroes.

The answer lay in the novel websites that they read. When they read it something passed through their head. Even if no one taught them how to use the skill.

Of course, advanced skills would still require strict conditions but they fully knew how to achieve those conditions.

To everyone, it seems that for each person the content of the web novel was different and the skills they learned also were different.

Satsuki had used more than 20 types of magic and Shizu had increased her Sword Mastery level by 10. Through training, Shizu learned countless sword stances and skills of previous holy swords.

They then began a dungeon expedition.

Sarila said the best way for a hero to become stronger was to fight monsters.

They just needed to know the basics, the skills. About how to use those skills would automatically be etched in their brains.

So heroes did not need to practice as hard as normal people. What they needed most were Lvl and experience points. They were all eager to test their new powers except for one person.

Torei hadn't received any guidance about his abilities.

When he asked Sarila, she shook her head and said that the content of the instructions resulted from collecting memories of past heroes but in his case, there weren't any heroes that were Thief.

Torei didn't think Sarila was lying, she always encouraged him during practice, even sending two instructors from the Scout and Assassin profession to teach him. Although their job was not like his, there were still many similarities.

After living here for a month and through Sarila's narrative, Torei understood the problem with his class.

In Agratha and other kingdoms, Thief was a profession for criminals. It left such a bad impression that all families with children who unluckily awakened this profession lied that their children were incompetent (Born with no class). They'd rather their kid not have any skills than be a Thief. Different from Scout whose job specialized in exploration and traps or Assasin who specialized in assassinating.

Thief was considered a vile profession that specialized only in stealing and pickpocketing, it didn't have any combat or dodging skills compared to the two classes above and didn't provide help for any expeditions.

Moreover, those who had this profession must be forced to wear an alarm necklace to avoid crimes. Since Torei was a member of the hero team, he was excluded from that. Even so, he couldn't avoid the detest gazes of the soldiers and the instructor Tristina of the group.

His role today in expeditions was to detect enemies because he was the one with the highest Vision stats but that was it.

The trap removal was done by a skilled Scout adventurer who was also the mentor of Torei, Stukoff san.

" It's for the best, you should just sit still and don't move a finger until my signal." - Stukoff said

Thus so Torei waited for hours.

Apparently, Stukoff had no intention of allowing Torei to participate in this quest at all.

He only taught him decently when Sarila watched. Torei could see that this guy didn't like him one bit.

It was true that Torei had a very good vision but it was not enough. Stukoff's Vision was not inferior to his, only about 5 units difference, making up for that a Scout had many other abilities such as listening or hiding, even a body heat sensor but the most important thing was the knowledge of monsters and enemies in this world.

An amateur like Torei couldn't dream to compete with a skilled adventurer. So to be honest, Torei was just dead weight to him.

Torei felt uncomfortable and wanted to enter the Dungeon, but he was scared. This was not a game but a reality, if he got caught in danger he could die.

Unlike his group, he did not receive any guidance about his profession. And thus Torei obediently waited for another hour. Just as he predicted, Stukoff considers him non-existent and returns with a report on enemy numbers, roads, and traps and the party begins with an expedition.

The main enemies of this dungeon are Orcs, they have large bodies and boar-like heads. Even though they were bigger than ordinary people, they were only weak opponents compared to Torei's group.

[Margna Burst]

[Quick Slash]

[Divine Slash]

[Barrier]

With a slash from her sword, Shizu cut three Orcs in halves, one of Satsuki's spells flattened the terrain, and one slash from Haruki the Orc chieftain fell down in an instant.

They couldn't even touch Mitsuru, who cast Barrier and casually charged toward the Orcs, the useless otaku Okuta mumbled while walking, Midori saw this expedition like a walk in the park. Not a single one of them hesitated to deal with the orcs. Torei looked at the tangled flesh under his feet, it was hard to believe it was once a creature.

A sour smell came to his mouth, and his face paled. How the hell were they supposed to do these disgusting things without flinching? Maybe it was the effect of the information they received, as Sarila said.

While in deep thought, he did not realize an Orc was faking its death. It reached for an ax and intended to attack Torei from behind.

" Watch out!"

The Orc was split into chunks of meat in an instant and Torei didn't even see the movement of Shizu until she stood behind him.

" Hey Torei, be careful! Do not be so dazed!" - Shizu

Torei said nothing and stared at the Orc's corpse. He was almost dead.

" No need to say thanks. Just please use your eyes. " - Shizu

Shizu frowned at him and then returned to her group of friends.

" Hey Shizu chan, you are amazing! I didn't even realize it." - Satsuki

" Yeah, it is also a function of the Intuition. Like I can feel the killing intent from that thing." - Shizu

" So badass! Just like a manga!" - Satsuki

" Hehehe." - Shizu

' How can they be so calm?' - Torei

Torei shudder as he almost died.

" Hey Torei kun, it looks like there's nothing for us." - Okura

Okura put his arm on Torei's shoulder and sighed heavily. He had always been lazy in recent months and had always been nagging that the protagonist's strength only comes out when going through adversity. These training sessions were just in vain blah blah blah…

" I thought my power would awaken soon, it seems like this trip was in vain." - Okura

" Hey Okura, if you want to level up, why don't you give us a hand? You have something like a buff, right?" - Shizu

" Hahaha these minion monsters are not worthy of my action." - Okura

Even a coward like Okura could speak normally. But Torei couldn't utter a word, he felt his whole body heavy. Thus so the Dungeon expedition ended easily, from start to finish all he did was go for a walk.

The sky went dark, after attending a banquet with the king, Torei asked for permission to return to his room. He couldn't bear the annoyed eyes staring at him all the time. Even though he barely did anything, fatigue still enveloped him. Could be said that he was the one who lost the most stamina of all of them. Torei was lost in thought, he regretted his choice. He should have listened to Sarila san. Jealousy had blurred his eyes, now he just felt really tired.

A moment later, a knocking came into his room.

" Who is it?" - Torei

" It's me."

" Haruki?" - Torei

When he opened the door, not only Haruki, but also Shizu, Satsuki, and Midori were there. Though he was surprised, he immediately felt annoyed, he wanted to find an excuse to kick them out.

But before he could say anything, Shizu and the others spontaneously jumped into his room, they brought a pile of food and casually displayed it on the floor.

" Hey!" - Torei

" Be quiet, Torei! If they find out we take the leftovers, it's gonna be awkward." - Satsuki

" Why my room?" - Torei

" Hehehe, it's because Shizu chan keeps begging!" - Midori

" Hey Midori!" - Shizu

" What?" - Torei

" Torei kun. Are you okay? Shizu was very worried." - Haruki

" Ah." - Torei

Torei was completely taken aback by this situation. He always thought that he was just an outsider.

" T-This idiot, you don't even realize that these days you were always avoiding me, you are not even looking at my face right now!" - Shizu

Shizu looked upwards, her eyes were glittering, a few tears dripped down, but she still stared at him.

' So that how it was, she was always paying attention. Yet I...' - Torei

Torei did not notice the feelings of those around him, he always thought he was alone.

" Although I'm not as close to you as Shizu, we have been friends for many years. You don't have to try to endure everything on your own. We will always be on your side." - Haruki

Torei felt something stuck in his throat, he didn't know what to say. It took a long time before he could utter the word "Thank you".

" Shizu brought you these things you like, you left the party so quickly." - Satsuki

" Hehe don't overthink, we've got a pretty good start. According to the king, maybe two years from now, we will be able to confront the demon king." - Midori

" Two years? Will we have to stay here for two years?" - Torei

" About that, Sarila said that in this world time passes much faster than ours, as long as we can return, we will be right at the starting point and there was another wonderful thing. Although we will no longer have magic, some of our skills and knowledge will be kept intact." - Midori

" Really?" - Torei

" Those who return will be stronger and probably will be more intelligent." - Satsuki

" Don't expect too much Satsuki." - Shizu

" What's wrong with this? I'm a magician, a magician! Maybe when I return to the earth I will become a successful businesswoman." - Satsuki

" Hahahaha."

The chatter lasted until late at night and everyone returned to their room except for Shizu who stayed behind. Being with her alone on a night like this made his heart want to jump from his chest.

" Hey, Torei...." - Shizu

" … You hate me, don't you?" - Shizu

" What! That's never gonna happened!" - Torei

" I-Is that so. I am always too irritable. Always complaining, now thinking back, you must be very upset." - Shizu

" Well, it was a bit annoying." - Torei

" S-So that was true?" - Shizu

Shizu looked down sadly. This timid side of her made him almost couldn't control the urge to hug her.

" But thank you. You always paid attention to me." - Torei

" Of course we are friends." - Shizu

" …"

" …"

" Torei, do not be sad, I know that in this world the class called Thief or something was not respected, but it's only a matter of this world. When we return, everything will go back as it was. Do not take matters too seriously here, the most important thing is that we return safely." - Shizu

Shizu approached, she grabbed Torei's shoulder.

" This time, I promise, I will definitely protect you." - Shizu

" Yes, I can count on you." - Torei

' Everything will be all right. I'm not alone.' Torei told himself.

" Everything gonna be alright. We will go home together. " - Shizu

?? time later

' So why did it turn out like this?'
