Chapter 3: 3

John found himself in the dead center of the First Floor. Suddenly, a powerful energy surge assaulted his senses.

"Oh, boy!" said John as his eyes spun in the sockets, making him dizzy. His eyes became unfocused, and ever so slowly, he slipped into unconsciousness, his tongue sticking out of his mouth.

Coming around, he felt a warm pillow pressed against his cheek. He found himself in a vast house, where beds were laid out along a long corridor. The whole place looked like a hospital ward. There were so many people of a wide range of ethnicities and languages lying on the beds. Some were just coming around, like John, while others were still unconscious. It was a mystery how John got there. He felt relatively normal again. Perhaps his body had adjusted to the enormous surge of energy that had assaulted his senses upon teleporting into the First Floor. Getting up, he rushed outside to start his journey of exploration. Around him, people were continuously teleported into The Tower as well. They were all more or less, reacting the same way John had. Some instantly fainted, others staggered but then regained balance, and yet others were throwing up. The area was getting congested quickly, with the teleported people bumping into one another, their heads banging together like coconuts. The stench of vomit diffused throughout the enormous space. John began to suffocate and feel claustrophobic; his face went green. He made his way through the crowd, looking for a people-free site where he could easily breathe. But there were just too many people. John ran into them and kept falling to the ground again and again. A mingling of many languages carried through the air so that an indecipherable sound was heard everywhere he went.

Additionally, there was the problem of the communication barrier. That is, there were people from all over the world. Hence, upon bumping and tripping onto each other, people could not express their frustration and anger. So, tempers were running high, and there was a threat of rioting ever lingering in the air. One gentleman, mainly, was loud and aggressive. He was making angry gestures at people who mistakenly bumped against him. John caught sight of him as he produced a pistol from his overcoat. His face a crimson color, he brandished the gun into the air. Panic spread like wildfire through the crowd, which instantly dispersed out of fear for their lives. Men and women both screamed. John, like many others, fell flat onto the ground. To assert his complete dominance, the angry man with the gun attempted to fire a shot in the air for further intimidation purposes. The shot rang out loudly, reverberating in the entire area. In a gesture of bravery, one man stood up and came face-to-face with the gunman, who pointed his pistol at the vigilante's chest. Everyone was shocked, but the vigilante, the rebel, the fearless hero, simply smiled at the gun. Furious, the gunman fired one shot after another. Everyone gasped and screamed, but amazingly, the "victim" merely giggled like he was being tickled with a feather. Anger replaced with bewilderment; the man gawked at his gun. Slowly, everyone began to laugh their heads off. John himself chortled, as he remembered that injuries were impossible in the First Zone. Humored, the crowd began to quickly disperse as new people teleported in. John dashed off to find an area with fewer people.

Finally reaching a less populated area, John caught his breath and looked around. Just as he had heard, Zone One was a vast circle. It contained the Main Tower Entrance and the Administrators' office. With the spirit of exploration taking hold of him, John started looking around the First Floor, taking in all the details. Stretching way beyond the limit of eyesight, he realized that it would take many weeks, even months, to explore it in its entirety. All the other Floors above, appearing small from a distance, were indeed shaped like disks. He knew well enough that the Administrators' office contained the pathway to other floors, that it was a kind of common channel through which every floor could be reached.

John scanned the crowd around him, hoping to find an administrator that could guide him to Zone One. He knew that they were rarely seen in Zone One, but they weren't wholly non-existent. John wanted to kick-start his life in the Tower by going to Zone Two and getting himself registered, earning his small sum of initial points, and getting his spirit card made. It was really tough to earn points, so John was looking forward to acquiring his first set of them. If only a friendly Administrator could help and guide him through all of this. But all John saw were crowds upon crowds of people, milling about and chatting in all sorts of languages that he didn't understand. He decided that no help would come his way and that he would have to keep roaming around to find the way to Zone Two. There were arrow signs in the way, but they were too difficult to read. Wandering around open spaces and streets, he regularly bumped into people who cursed and made furious remarks that John couldn't understand. He continued to search for the entrance to Zone Two for hours on end. John kept track of time by looking at clocks or asking strangers through sign language about the time. Then, he met some people that could speak the same language as John. They told him to look for a giant wall, which would allow him to go to Zone Two. But still, they weren't able to give him any directions.

Finally, after three long hours of searching, tripping, falling, and being lost, he saw the vast wall loom in the distance. A large sign near the wall said:

"Entrance to Zone Two: Dedicated to Entertainment and Commerce!"
