Chapter 16: KING TO THE HELP!

KING

I was working late at the night in my office on the ground floor. I had this important meeting scheduled a day after tomorrow with the executives of the pharma company. They were one of the best in their business, but only a few knew what happened under the ground of the company's laboratory.

They had these special kinds of drugs that sent people high quickly, and its effect remained for a long. They claimed that the side effects of their drug were not as severe as the other counterparts in the market.

Their product was quite popular among the youngsters... what do they call them again?

GenZ!

I could never keep on with these modern terminologies young people invented these days.

I felt thirsty, and my hand shot to pick up the glass only to find it empty. The bottle beside it was empty too.

I sighed, rubbing my face. I had removed my dark shades while working. Times of isolation were the only ones where I could breathe freely and without that restraint.

I checked the time to see it was past midnight. I should get some rest before my mind decided to revisit the past.

I left my office and headed to the kitchen. While drinking the water, I felt the pin-drop silence in the large house. Cameron was asleep hours ago, and I hope little Miss Tornado was also lost in her dreamland.

The day that girl has stepped into this house, she had created only a ruckus and nothing else. She had broken almost half of my furniture and electrical devices and the bill I had to pay made me want to strangle her to death.

How could she create so much destruction in such a short time?

I shook my head, feeling disgusted at myself for thinking about her out of all people!

But then I heard something. It was a low sound, almost easy to miss, but I caught it. I placed the glass on the breakfast bar and climbed the stairs to the first floor.

"What the hell?!!" She gasped in fright and placed her heart on her moving chest.

Why I was not surprised?

I stared at her, waiting for her to give me an explanation on why she was roaming in my house like a restless ghost in the middle of the night.

"Your shades are ugly."

I narrowed my eyes at her though she couldn't see them because of the dark shades I wore.

Why on earth has she decided to say that in this situation?

"Is there something on my face?"

Yes... awkwardness!

"Why are you zombie walking at this hour of the night?"

Shouldn't it be me asking that?

She narrowed her eyes at me. "You are dumb!"

I could have gotten angry at her comment but this time, I knew she didn't mean to insult me. Sighing in defeat, she tried to walk past me.

"You need something." That was the first thought that came to my mind after studying her while her mouth spurted out stupid things.

She froze in her spot, her body tensed. Her reaction only puzzled me even more.

Was she spying on me? I got suspicious.

But then I didn't feel her scared, nor did she act like a deer caught in the headlights.

It meant only one thing!

"You are in a problem, Miss Maxwell!"

The stillness in her movements proved me right.

She was indeed in some problem. But what?

"Um-I-no. I am n-not in any problem" She laughed, throwing her head back, and the weird sound of it only firmed my speculation.

But if she didn't want to tell me then I was not interested in wasting my time with her more than I had already done. I turned and began walking towards the stairs to go to my room on the third floor when her call stopped me.

"Hey! wait!"

I turned to face her.

"I-um. A-I... Can you give me your phone for a minute? I - I want to call Nora. It-It's urgent, like super urgent!"

Was that politeness I just heard?

But she was as dumb as I thought because I was sure she didn't have Nora's number. Then how was she planning to call her?

I dialled Nora's number and passed the phone to her. She waited for me to leave I could tell that by the irritated look that crossed her face before she gave up after seeing me standing right at my place.

She placed the phone to her ear and waited in nervousness. She tsked in annoyance before redialling the number. And by the look on her face, it was obvious that Nora didn't receive the calls.

That was probably the first time I saw her quitting something so easily, though I knew her for only twenty days. She passed me my phone back and mumbled a thank you, keeping her head low.

Was she crying?

"I should go now. It-It's late. Thank you again for the um-favour?!" She croaked out.

I wouldn't have bothered to persist more than I already had if it was a different situation... or perhaps a different person.

But something about her voice made me ask her again,

"Are you okay, Miss Maxwell?"

She paused, still avoiding looking at me. My eyes travelled down to see her fists clenched tightly by her side as if she was trying to stop herself from something. Something she desperately wanted to do.

"A- yeah. I - I am all good. Hahaha! um- okay good night" She blurted out before running into her room.

I stood there dumbfounded and utterly confused. What had gotten into that girl?

Whatever it was, she was giving me a headache with everything she did and every word she said. I returned to my room and got into the bed after removing my shades.

Sleep had never been my good friend. It was useless to close my eyes, opening the gate to my soul for the intruders, which were my past demons.

I kept staring at the ceiling like a daily ritual that I was following for years relentlessly. My mind was blank... just like my soul.

Ten minutes passed, and a face began forming in front of my eyes. I thought it was her... but when the dark wavy hair complemented with chocolate brown eyes, I sat up in the bed in shock.

Why the hell I was thinking about Miss Maxwell?

I clenched my jaw until it hurt but couldn't shake off her thoughts. She seemed troubled. I had never seen her hesitating like that. She sounded like she was begging for help but couldn't muster up enough courage to ask it out loud.

What it could be?

I reached for my phone and opened Google.

'I can't believe I am doing this!'

I typed- what can make women cry- in the search bar and within the next three seconds, a list popped up on the screen.

The initial sites had very disturbing titles, and thus, I scrolled down until I found one useful blog post. I tapped on it and skipped the useless part to jump directly on the list given there.

1. Heartbreak

That girl broke only bones, and I doubt anyone would have ever dared to even touch her, let alone play with her heart.

2. Emotional movie/novel scenes

The last time I checked she spent all her day watching some nonsense cartoon shows on the TV with Adam, and the books this place had, were only related to business administration and politics which made her scrunch up her nose.

3. overpampering

Well, this was not her home, and I was certainly not her old man, Benjamin!

4. hitting the orgasm

I would have laughed at that if I knew how to laugh. It was the last thing that came to my mind when I thought about her.

5. period pain

How- Wait!

"Damn it!"

I jumped out of the bed and took the keys to my car and a jacket. Putting on the shades, I jogged to the garage. I could have ordered someone to get it but then... it would have only been uncomfortable for me.

It was only best if nobody found out about it!

About half an hour later and with a heavy head and unrequired knowledge given by the pharmacy guy, I headed to her room.

I stood awkwardly outside the door, staring at the pale green paper bag in my hand.

Was I really doing this?

At that moment, I realised how I acted exactly how I shouldn't and wouldn't for anyone.

'But you are doing it for her though!'

A voice at the back of my head pointed out the obvious. The obvious that I didn't want to acknowledge at all. I gulped the spit down my throat as I rose my hand to knock on the door.

How was I going to face her? And what was I going to say to her?

Fuck! What the hell was I doing this in the first place?!

She may die for all I cared then why?

Anger boiled inside me.

I put that bag outside the door and knocked gently on it. I waited for a minute but didn't get any reply, so I knocked once again. But as soon as I heard the bathroom door opening, I turned on my heels and hurried from there without glancing back.
