Chapter 4: The death of Abbigail Miller

The Undertaker's gaze was fixed on a small building at the far end of the town square. The hut was built out of old wood and looked like it could collapse at any minute. It was the house of the Millers Marjoe realized in the exact moment the crooked door was pushed open, and Jack Miller stumbled out onto his porch.

His exasperated shout echoed over the empty plaza.

He stormed down his stairs, running toward the dark figure by the fountain.

"What have you done?!" he shrieked, wildly waving his arms around.

"Give her back. Give my Abby back to me!" His voice broke with the last word, and he stumbled, falling to his knees a couple of steps away from the fountain.

"What have you done, you monster. How could you do that to her?" His moans grew more and more quiet until finally, there was nothing left but a soft weeping.

Until now, the Undertaker hadn't moved at all, almost like he hadn't even noticed the broken man in front of him.

Never averting his gaze from the small hut in front of him, he suddenly rose from the steps of the fountain, unfolding his spider-like legs.

Interlacing his fingers behind his back, he strode towards the house like he had no hurry in the world, ignoring Jack completely. The moment he walked by him, Jack stiffened, and his breath hitched in his throat. When he raised his hand to his neck, it looked for a second like he would suffocate right there in the middle of the street.

But as soon as the Undertaker had passed him, he sucked in a shallow breath coughing as he looked around him frantically.

The floorboards creaked under his shoes as the Undertaker crossed the small porch and made his way into the tiny house of the Millers. It took only moments until he reappeared, but this time, he wasn't alone. A young woman was draped over his arms, her arms dangling from her slender body like the limps of a mannequin which strings had been cut.

Marjoe didn't know Abbigail Miller very well and had only really seen her on the streets a couple of times since she spent most of her time at home. But he still recognized her almost instantaneously. She wore a baby blue dress, her feet were bare, and her honey-colored hair gently moved in the breeze.

She looked almost like she was asleep hadn't it been for the dull look in her wide-open eyes and the way her neck was bend a bit further than should be possible.

"Oh, no. Isn't that Billie's mom?" a breathy voice asked directly next to Marjoes ear and made him almost jump out of his skin. He hadn't even noticed when Susanna had moved next to him. Turning his head saw that Danny, as well as Yuma, were pressed against the shutters, eyes wide, to stare outside, both captivated by the scene in front of them.

The Undertaker carried Abby Miller with wide steps like her body weighed nothing at all. He crossed the town square and moved along the main street that led out of the town and into the woods. Knowing that he would disappear out of Marjoe's viewpoint any second, he stormed out of the room. His mother sat in a chair directly opposite the door, looking startled when he rushed into the room. To Marjoe's surprise, she held an enormous kitchen knife in her small hands.

"Get back in there!" she whisper-shouted at her son, her eyes filled with terror.

Marjoe wasn't usually the kind of boy that ignored his mother, but this time, he barely recognized her words. His small feet hit the dirt road, as he nearly tripped in his hurry before he could level his gaze at the back of the Undertaker.

At that moment, the creature at the end of the roar turned his head in his direction. Goosebumps spread over Marjoe's body like a flood wave before the Undertaker turned back around and continued his path along the road. When he had passed the last house of the town, he swiftly stopped in his tracks and waited. After a few seconds, the air around him started to vibrate, and then, in an instant, he disappeared like he had never even been there to begin with.

And he took Abby Miller's body with him.
