Chapter 1: chapter 1

It was five o'clock in the morning. The place was still wet and cold due to the rain of the previous night. It has finally arrived, the day which Sadik, was to go to one of the most prestigious boarding school in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. He is the eldest son of Mr. Tanko, a tall dark man who was an English teacher from the village of Mazaga. He recently won a scholarship which gave him the opportunity to study far away from home. It's been his dream to travel far away from home since when he was a child but never has he had the chance to. Mazaga is a small village by the road side with a population that barely exceeds five hundred. With that small population, almost all the members of the village can identify one another. The village has only one primary school with no secondary school. For that reason, all the children in the village go somewhere else for their secondary school. Sadik has been attending boys' boarding secondary school that is 10 kilometers away from his village, but with the scholarship he recently won, everything will be changing soon.

He was the first person to wake up, due to desperation and eagerness to go to his new school, feeling like the day was not going to break. He woke up feeling so happy because he's finally going to achieve his dream. He moved to his parents' window and knocked at it. ''Wake up mom, it's already five O'clock'' he shouted. ''What do we have here? Someone who hardly wakes is the one waking the whole family, what a joyful day indeed'' said Mr. Tanko. '' Oh he must be very happy'' replied Mrs. Tanko a fair and a short woman. His mother got out of the room and started making preparations for his leaving while he and his dad went and had their prayers in the mosque nearby. When they came back, his mother had already warmed some water which Sadik will use for his bathing due to the cold weather.

By 6 O'clock, Sadik had already taken his bath, and had eaten the "dumame" (a leftover food usually enjoyed in the morning) which his mother prepared for him.

He was fully prepared for the journey ahead of him. He put everything he needed in a metal box which his father bought him the previous day. His mother helped him in taking out the metal box outside close to the road to wait for a passing vehicle. His father followed them with his two sisters Zainad and Zara. His father moved close to him and held him by the shoulder. "You are going to a big city now, you must be very careful with the people you interact" his father advised. "You should take your studies seriously, and never surround yourself with a bad company of friends" his father added.

Before his father could finish advising him, a truck filled with woods came to pass. "Where are you going to?" Inquired the truck driver. "We want you to take this boy to Potiskum town" answered Mr. Tanko. The truck driver came down from the truck and helped Sadik to put his box in the loading space of the truck. "Come on in, let's go" said the truck driver, and Sadik jumped in to the truck. "Don't forget to do all that I've advised you" Mr. Tanko reminded. "Okay dad, I promise I won't let you down" said assured. The driver started the engine of the truck, and the truck started moving slowly. Mrs. Tanko started shading tears as she saw her son leaving. "Don't worry mum, I will be okay" Sadik shouted. "Goodbye Sadik, you should buy something for us when you are coming back from the city" Said Zara. "I promise I will" Sadik replied.

It took them about 15 minutes to reach Potiskum, and the driver dropped Sadik at a motor park where he can easily get a car to Abuja. A man working at the motor park came to them and asked if Sadik was a passenger. "Yes he is" replied the truck driver. "He has a box at the back, you should help him to bring it down please" the truck driver continued. Sadik came down from the truck. He was helped in carrying his box to the motor park, and the truck driver took his leave. "Where are you going to?" asked the man working at the motor park. "I want to go to Abuja" Sadik replied. "And what are you going to do there?" The motor park worker asked surprisingly. "I am going to attend a school there" Sadik answered. The worker burst out of a serious laugher. "I wonder what school will accept someone like you in Abuja" said the worker while he was still laughing. Sadik kept quiet without saying a word. He took Sadik to the car that will be going to Abuja. "Is he a passenger here?" the driver questioned. "Yes he is" replied the worker."Looks like he's just in time, because I only need one person more for the numbers of passengers in my car to be completed" said the driver. He helped Sadik put his box in the boot. Sadik entered the car with four other passengers, and finally, their journey to Abuja had begun. Sadik was so excited when their journey began; he observed a lot of new places he had never been before. It was his first time he had ever been far away from home.
