Chapter 5: The Battle

At first, there was silence. Then some Kalibri took a few steps back, the Elves following suit. Then Maila looked back and saw the Queen glaring at her. She turned back to look at the innocent and frightened citizens, before raising her sword into the air and screaming "Forward!" . She quickly and silently muttered an apology to the Goddess of Life, Naidi.

She rushed forward on her horse and began to stab at any citizen she saw. Each time she saw a Kalibri fall, her heart shattered more and more. The screams of children and adults alike pierced her ears as she murdered more and more. Each stab bloodied her once shiny armour more and more. Each heartbeat raced with her horse as her blood pumped faster more and more.

SLAM!

She fell to the floor and rolled around, hitting her back on a tree, the dust from the nearby ground swirling around her face. She coughed and blinked multiple times, desperately trying stay conscious, winded from the sudden fall. Slowly, she picked herself up, and gasped at the sight of a poisoned arrow in her horses shoulder. She looked in the direction of where the arrow would've come from, seeing a stone faced elf retreating. She pushed her anger down, it was her fault this was happening. Rushing to Caramel, she saw that the arrow was in too deep. She stroked his mane, before apologising and returning to the tree for her sword.

Maila ran toward some oncoming Kalibri who were running towards her army, clearly warriors. Maila couldn't help but notice how all of them either had two tails, or one tail with two ends, along with small horns, and asic patterns. She learnt about them in books; rare and super rare traits. Stronger than the common Kalibreus, not as powerful as the legendary, who were usually leaders. Basic war strategy.

Without hesitation, Maila ran towards a Kalibreus, making sure to be sloppy. It wasn't all an act though; the impact from the fall and hit into the tree whilst wearing the armour came with terrible back pain.

She lifted her sword and struck the Kailbreus, missing it by inches, and stood her ground as it swiped in between the joints of her armour. Each cut stung more and more and her vision began to swim as she realised its claws were poisoned. She stepped back, not being able to focus. She swung her sword one more time, this time striking the Kalibreus in the neck, so it was half severed.

She dropped her sword and stepped back, her vision coming in and out of focus. Panicked, she ran into the forest to her right, and the trees became a blur as she tripped over tree roots and stumbled across the uneven forest floor. She sat down and applied pressure to a rather large wound on her leg, trying to focus on her symptoms. She knew poisons of Xena; it was part of her first year study. But foreign planet poisons were of her final studies, and due to the large surplus of inhabited planets, detail wasn't common among the studies.

Cursing, Maila couldn't hear the footsteps approaching her until it was too late.

~~~
Maila woke up in a dark cell, the floor damp, the smell dingy. The walls were made of a stone, similar to cobblestone, which had a blueish purple tint. The floor was concrete and was damp as the ceiling was made of stone that allowed rain to pass through. There were purple vines creeping down the walls, of the same colour as the grass on the surface, and there was mould spreading from a corner. Weird; she didn't remember it raining.
Disgusted, Maila made to move, but was stopped by the sharp stabbing pain that erupted from her leg, which was bandaged. Her other wounds were either tended to, or gone completely, and Maila knew at once it was the work of an Elf. She prayed to Naidi that someone would take her out of the dungeon soon.
Her wish wasn't that simple though, and whilst she heard a door creak open, the hard footsteps gave her a feeling of foreboding. Her mouth twisted to a frown as a figure came into her cell and pushed her against the wall.
It was an elf.
He grabbed her throat and looked into her eyes, though she could barely see him as her vision was blurring. He mumbled something and stepped away to the bars of the cell, cursing under his breath.
Maila gasped for breath and struggled to stand up, her leg erupting in sparks of pain, her knees wobbling. Immediately, the elf turned to look at her, and she couldn't help but notice the flicker of pain the went through his face before it turned to a look of pure fury.
"So you're the Captain of the Royal Guard? Pretty pathetic." He spat. He walked out of her cell, leaving her confused and in pain. Before he began walking away after locking her cell though, she managed to cry out a desperate "WAIT!"
He turned, and though the darkness concealed his features pretty well, his golden eyes seemed to glow in the darkness.
"Take..Take me t-to your leader..please..you d-don't understand!" she managed to stutter out, her dry throat crying in pain.
Her glared at her, staring into her eyes intensely.
"Why should I? So you could murder Him like you murdered our kinds?" his venomous words stabbed at her heart, and her head hung low in shame.
"You don't, you don't understand! The Queen, she..she won't stop until she has the planet. I need to w-warn them, please!"
He looked at her again, his judgemental eyes looking her up and down as his arms crossed over his chest. He looked towards a slightly lit up hallway and shouted for two guards. The elf looked at her one final time before saying his final goodbye for the time being;
"You better not thrash. Each word, action or anything similar against us will have another of your men killed."
Confused at his words, Maila didn't stop him as he walked away, instead focusing on the two bulky men that grabbed her by the arms roughly, pushing her along, not caring if she fell or cried out in pain, instead kicking her if she did so.
Maila was forced up a set of stairs and out of a doorway, walking into a large room that had lots of wounded Elves and Kalibri baring their teeth or throwing her looks that could kill. Each step caused her more and more guilt.
But she was getting closer to her goal now. Closer to betraying her people, closer to saving these that were not her own. Closer to the leaders that would most definitely kill her.
Wow, okay, lots of action in this chapter! I hope that Maila gets better, and that Sulon is okay. What do you think of that weird encounter with the elf too?? Who shot down poor baby Caramel?? Where is her father, and how is Talia back on planet Xena?? Let's hope that the Goddess is on Maila's side </3
