Chapter 67: Conference

Okay, so it's been around ten minutes since the conference started. The good news is that no one has come yet; I've been keeping a visual of what's happening with security cameras throughout the whole place.

Me and my big mouth. As I think nothing wrong has happened, someone has entered the first obstacle, the infinite hallway.

I honestly don't know how they would escape this in the first place; the whole thing is an infinite loop. There is no physical way to escape until time runs out.

What is that thing the person is holding? Why is it glowing? Hm? The cameras just went out. I guess I'll need to check this out for myself.

I walk to the hallway the possible assassin was in when he was last seen, and he isn't there. Even if you break through the wall, the other side of the hallway is all that's there. How is that possible? I know that this is impossible to escape.

But somehow, the spell has been dispelled! It must have something to do with that glowing object in the guy's hand.

If he managed to dispel the infinite hallway, it would only be a matter of time before he found the way through the next barrier.

The barrier makes anything inside non-existent by cutting it out of space. But therein lies its biggest weakness. A whole part of the embassy not being there will get noticed.

If he can figure out where the barrier starts, he can probably dispel it. I need to find him before that happens. I prefer not to be executed for my failures; thank you very much.

I will set up the infinite hallway trick again, just in case someone else comes, but I need to leave for the next area of the building where the barrier is.

How will I find this guy? I'll wait for him at the barrier. I mean, I can teleport, you know? Just an accurate quick teleport later, and I'm by the barrier. It seems it still hasn't been broken through. That's good news.

Now I just need to wait for the possible assassin to get here and capture him. No biggie.

"So you finally got here?" I say, striking a sick pose.

'Why is that girl doing something so stupid?' The assassin is probably thinking that! I can see it written all over his face!

I try to trap him by upping the gravity around him, but that thing in his hand starts to glow again, and the magic is dispelled again!

How is he doing that? If technology that could instantly dispel magic instantly existed, it would be everywhere; how did he get his hands on that thing?

Whatever the case is, I need to get that thing out of his hands if I want to win. That means I can't use magic, but he probably can. This is going to be more difficult than I thought.

How am I going to get that thing out of his hands? I suck at hand-to-hand combat, and I can't use any weapons. I've just never been trained to. Magic has spoiled me since the Shift, so I don't know any other way to fight.

Maybe that thing has a limited number of uses, but I doubt it. Perhaps I can still use teleportation. It is almost instant, so he probably doesn't have enough time to cancel it out.

The problem is once I use it once, he'll expect it. I need to use that trick when he's least expecting it so I can get behind him and get that magic-dispelling device out of his hands.

To do that, I need to make him let his guard down... this is going to hurt, isn't it. If I knew this would happen, I would've asked for some weapons from Kari.

It seems like he has a knife... perfect. I don't have any way of healing, so it's over if I get stabbed by that thing. I was way too confident coming into this. I'm not some omniscient being; I should have known that there were situations that would put me in danger.

Too late now. He starts to run at me, charging up a fire spell. A fireball shoots out of his palm and starts barreling towards at me, but I jump out of the way. After that, he came from my left to stab me, and I blocked him with my arm.

The knife digs a good couple of inches into my arm. Jeez, that hurts! Great, now I'm going to have a scar. He jumps back, realizing he missed his chance to give me the time to wrap the cut on my arm with my sleeve. It seems like he is planning to use another spell.

It will probably be fire based. Since he's playing with fire, I think I know a way to beat him. I run to the other side of the room we're in, charging for a particular red and white lever.

If I can activate the sprinkler system, I can dull his ability to use magic. Seems he caught onto what I'm doing, though. He's no longer aiming for me.

A fireball whizzes right past me towards the fire alarm burning a hole where the lever used to be, but my plan still works. Right near the fire alarm lever, there just so happened to be some wooden tables stacked up.

Because of that, the area starts to burn, creating smoke. This is just what I need to set off the fire alarm.

He was smarter with his first shot, which, when it missed me, didn't hit anything flammable. This time, he was more worried about losing his ability to use magic than setting a fire, so he didn't consider the wooden tables near where he was shooting. That was his fatal mistake.

Now, you might be wondering, won't this cause the sprinkler to go off in the room where the conference is being held? That is a valid concern, and the answer is, don't worry about it. I'm sure that the diplomats would much rather be soaked than dead.

Also, I think that my magic barrier has kinda cut the supply of water from the outside world. Remember, nothing can get in or out. I don't think the sprinklers work in there. There is also a tiny hole in the barrier for air though, so they can still breath.

Well, now that the sprinklers are doing their job, time for round two. I grab a broom I found on the ground and charge for the assassin. He swings his knife at me but almost slips because he put too much force in. I use this moment to sweep his feet from under him, and he goes down.

I try to grab the dispelling device from his hand, but he jumps back from on the ground and quickly gets back up.

He throws the knife at me, cutting my cheek, but by now, I know his guard is down. I teleport behind him and knock him out with a good bonk on the head.

The fire department should be here soon, so I'll bring this assassin outside and tell them what happened. I grab the dispelling device from him and throw it into 'Singularity' so he can't get it back. After that, I tie him up and put him in a corner.

Luckily no more assassins came after that. I guess whoever tried stopping this conference thought that one assassin who could dispel magic would be enough—jokes on them. I will probably need a hospital visit, though. I got a massive gash on my arm, and I'm soaking wet.

Right after the job was done, I got another message from the princess telling me good job. She sent assistants to come and pick up the assassin, and I told them I would hand the dispelling device to Osiris. I feel like he would be the best person to ask about this strange thing.

She also told me that the next conference I would have to guard will be in two weeks. Hahhh... Next time I'm bringing more preparations. If people are going to bring machines that can stop magic, I need to bring some modern technology that can't be interrupted by that stuff.

Guess I'll need to ask my sister for help; how unfortunate.

Now that I think about it, why was the assassin so willing to appear on the security cameras? He must have had training to avoid being seen or something, but he just walked through the hallways normally. I guess he was overconfident with that strange device on hand.

===

"How did the mission go, agent#1001? Hello? Come in! He must have been captured! Cut off the loose threads, I'll go handle this next conference myself. He was supplied an artifact and still messed this one up!"

That night the captured assassin died mysteriously in his sleep.

Another chapter so soon? Crazy! Anyway, The previous chapter was written like three months ago, and I never published it, lol. Felt like now would be a good time to pick up this story again.
