Chapter 2: Ashcroft's Murder

The rain lashed against the windows of the mansion, the wind howling like a banshee. Inside, a fire crackled in the hearth, casting long shadows on the faces of the five people huddled around it.

They were all suspects in the murder of Lord Ashcroft, who had been found dead in his study earlier that day.

There was the beautiful Lady Ashcroft, her face pale and drawn. Her husband's death had left her a widow and her stepson, the handsome but arrogant Charles Ashcroft, the heir to a vast fortune.

Then there was the loyal butler, Mr. Finch, who had been with the family for over twenty years. His face was etched with concern, and his eyes darted nervously around the room.

There was also the enigmatic Dr. Harris, the family physician, who had arrived just moments before the murder was discovered. His face was calm and collected, but his eyes held a strange glint.

Finally, there was the young and inexperienced maid, Mary. Her eyes were wide with fear, and she trembled uncontrollably.

The detective, Inspector Davies, surveyed the group with a keen eye. He knew that one of them was a killer, but he had no idea who.

"I have gathered you all here," he began, his voice grave, "because I believe that one of you is responsible for the murder of Lord Ashcroft. I will not leave this house until I find the culprit."

A tense silence descended upon the room. The suspects all exchanged nervous glances, each wondering if they would be the next to be accused.

Inspector Davies spent the next few hours interviewing each of the suspects. He listened carefully to their stories, looking for any inconsistencies or signs of guilt.

As the night wore on, the storm outside grew worse. The wind howled louder, and the rain lashed against the windows with renewed ferocity.

Suddenly, a bloodcurdling scream pierced the night air. Everyone jumped up, their faces filled with fear.

Inspector Davies grabbed his gun and ran towards the source of the scream. He found Mary, the maid, standing in the hallway, her face contorted in terror.

"Someone tried to kill me!" she cried. "It was him! Dr. Harris!"

The doctor, who had been standing nearby, looked up in surprise. "That's a lie!" he exclaimed. "I would never hurt anyone!"

But Mary was adamant. "He attacked me from behind," she said. "I saw his face in the moonlight. I know it was him!"

Inspector Davies arrested Dr. Harris and took him into custody. He then turned to the other suspects and said, "I believe I have solved this case. Dr. Harris was the murderer. He killed Lord Ashcroft in order to inherit his fortune."

The other suspects were shocked by the news. They had all suspected each other, but they had never suspected Dr. Harris.

As the police led Dr. Harris away, Mary looked at him with a mixture of fear and hatred. "You will pay for what you have done," she hissed.

Dr. Harris, his face pale and drawn, simply looked at her and smiled coldly. "We all have our secrets, Mary," he said.

And with that, he was gone. The mystery of Lord Ashcroft's murder was finally solved, but the secrets of the mansion remained buried deep within its walls.
