After school, I opened my door. I overheard a conversation in the living room and huddled by the door to listen.
"Cole, be reasonable." my mother said.
"Jacqueline, you be reasonable. I just want to be in my little girl's life again."
Then, I slowly walked to the stairs and saved myself from tripping over a stair. I finally made it up the stairs when-
"Jaclyn! Can you come here please?" mom said as Grey ran into my arms.
'Shit.' I thought as I slowly went down the stairs.
"Hi." I said as I stood in the doorway of the living room.
A tall male figure looked over his shoulder to me. Grey circled around my legs until I picked her up.
"She looks like her mother." the man said as he looked towards my mom.
"Excuse me?!" my mother yelled as she signaled for me to go upstairs.
"N-now let's be rational." I said in a shaky tone.
"Time for being rational is over." the man said.
"Stop!" I yelled as they both looked at me and froze. "Don't fight. Not here, not now. I don't want to be the reason that history repeats itself."
My mother walked over to me and held onto a side of my face.
"I'm sorry, hun. You know what? The adults will handle this, rationally. Go upstairs and do your homework."
"Yes ma'am." I said as I carried Grey upstairs and into my room.
I did my homework quickly and checked it a few times after. Then, my phone began to buzz down my desk. It was an unknown number. I took a deep breath and impersonated a Russian woman's voice.
"Hello. Markov Zenoviev speaking." I said.
"Hi, miss. Is there a Jaclyn Parker I can speak to?" that voice sounded familiar.
"Heyo." I said after clearing my throat and returning to my actual voice.
"You liar."
"Now, what do you want?" I said as Grey curled up in my lap to... take a nap I guess.
"First off, my name is..." after he finished that sentence, I remembered the year before.
It's not a good place to have a cliffhanger. I know.
