Chapter 4: Who’s Teaching Who?

Elena walked with me to a room on the second story that was across from Zeph's. She gave me a fresh set of pajamas, "Here, this'll do for now. We can go shopping in the town tomorrow."

I responded, "Thank you for giving me a family." I hugged her for a short while.

"Good night Nova, sweet dreams."

"Good night mom," I said with a smile as bright as a sun.

I got undressed and put the clothes in a hamper near the door. I stared at myself in the mirror above the dresser and admired my perfect snow white skin, feeling at one with this new body. It was like we were made for each other, body and soul. First I put on some clean underwear and pajama shorts, then I put on my pajama top and glanced at myself once more. I looked really cute!

I got into bed and tried to remember who the person in this body was before me. All I could figure out was a name; Melody. It seemed as though the owner of this body cherished whoever had that name. As for who that was, I have no clue. After a few minutes I drifted off into a deep slumber.

***

I woke up from a peaceful sleep, one of the only peaceful ones i've had. I looked at the clock beside my bed and saw that it was only 8:00 in the morning. I got out of bed and went downstairs. A similar seen from the night before, Elena was cooking breakfast in the kitchen while Markus read the daily newspaper. Zeph was not awake yet but I wasn't surprised because he was only eight years old.

I called out from the bottom of the stairwell, "Good morning!"

They both replied, "Good morning, Nova."

I walked to the dining room table and sat in the chair next to where Zeph sat yesterday.

The smell of food intoxicated the air, "What's for breakfast, mom?" I asked.

Elena replied, "Eggs and hash browns."

She finished cooking and put plates full of food on the table. I glanced at the empty seat next to me, "Can I wake up Zeph? I've been wanting to try something since yesterday."

They both nodded in approval. They both looked at me as I mouthed the words 'Zeph, Wake up' and thought their ears had failed them but sure enough, after a few seconds, Zeph walked downstairs and sat next to me. Both Elena and Markus looked at me with disbelief.

I saw their expressions and explained, "Since I am able to do song magic I can manipulate how people feel but thats not all song magic can do. I manipulated the sound waves created from my voice so that only Zeph can hear it. I guess you could call it a mixed spell between song and sound magic. Watch, I'll do it again."

I turned to Zeph, "Okay, Zeph. I'm going to turn around and say something, after I say it can you repeat it?"

Zeph smiled at me, "Yep!"

I turned around and after mouthing the words 'Mommy and Daddy are so cool' Zeph repeated what I said.

Zeph smiled, "Mommy and Daddy are so cool!"

I smiled in Elena's direction, "I can teach you if you want?"

Elena laughed, "Yes, you can definitely teach me that. That's so much easier than trying to wake Zeph up in person."

Markus just looked at me with a dumbstruck expression that read, 'What the heck! Didn't you just learn song magic yesterday!?'

Markus spoke up, "If everyone is done with their food lets head outside for some training."

Since everyone could do sound magic, everyone was able to train. Markus would train me and Zeph in sound magic and Elena would teach me different ways to sing that would effect one's emotions. During a break, I would help Elena with learning the spell I used during breakfast. This was the regime that Markus had set up.

Elena sat on the porch watching the three of us train in sound magic because she did not like violence. Markus stood in front of me and Zeph with a stern look on his face. Both of us were excited to learn some new spells. We stood at attention for an order.

Markus stated, "I want you both to tell me what sound magic is."

I locked eyes with Markus firmly, "Sound magic is the ability to manipulate sound waves that are made by other things then ourselves."

"That is correct." He gave an approving nod and then continued.

"Today we will start with a simple spell that will test your patience. It is called Sound Barrier. It is exactly what it sounds like, you both will create a sound proof barrier that can last for at least one minute. When we finish, Nova, you can teach Elena that trick you learned."

I had indeed thought about this as well. this is a good spell for stealth missions since it blocks out sound in a certain radius, including our voices.

After he said that, he walked over to the porch and sat next to Elena. He looked at us and yelled, "Begin!"

The first thought that came to mind was that he had not told us how to do it. Quickly though, I realized that him telling us would amount to nothing. We have to figure it out ourselves.

An idea popped into my head. I had once read that the sun emits a sound so deep that to hear it, a sound recording for a week had to be sped up into a few minutes. The Reason for this is because the sound waves emitted from the sun are moving so slow that the sound being emitted is almost negligible!

Of course, I would be able to figure this out but for Zeph, an eight year old, this was unlikely. So I explained it in simpler terms, "Zeph, do you see that stick behind you and the flower in front of you?"

Zeph looked up at me, "Yes."

"Okay, imagine a circle around you, the two ends are the stick and the flower. After you have that image in mind, imagine that there is a glass dome around you, meeting at the point a bit above your head."

After a bit Zeph said with his eyes closed, "Okay, I got it so far."

"Now, instead of glass replace it with sound at a super low frequency and hold that for a minute. Simply put, make the sound waves slower."

Zeph looked like he understood it well as he went quiet for a while so I started to try my explanation out too. I sat on the ground cross-legged and closed my eyes. After picturing the sound dome I put it into practice. My whole body felt tingly but that meant it was working! After a minute I opened my eyes and looked to the side. There, Zeph was still attempting to do what I had explained. I got up and walked over to Markus feeling proud for getting the spell down in a short time.

"I finished the spell," I said resolutely.

Markus did not expect results so soon and with doubt looked at me, "Really? Show me."

I did exactly what I did before and Markus was stunned. He had such a prodigy as his daughter? He was overjoyed but at the same time resentful, as it took him a year to complete this spell. He was truly proud to have a talented daughter.
