Chapter 539: The Red Scream (3)

The town stood before them as a dark and desolate testament. The stench of decomposing corpses filled the air, penetrating their nostrils and leaving a bitter taste in their mouths. The atmosphere was suffused with oppressive humidity, as if the town itself were shrouded in a pall of grayish mist.

The streets were littered with debris and remnants of collapsed buildings, silent reminders of the devastation that had befallen the place. The extinguished lights and tilted lampposts gave a sense of abandonment and hopelessness. Darkness swirled in every corner, creating unsettling shadows that seemed to take on a life of their own.

Walking through those streets was like entering a labyrinth of nightmares. The mostly ruined buildings stood like silent tombs, with cracked walls and broken windows. Shadows danced mysteriously on the facades, as if they concealed unspeakable secrets that were only revealed in the darkness of night.

The constant patter of rain created a somber symphony, as if nature itself was mourning the loss and desolation of the place. Every step they took was accompanied by the squelch of soaked earth and the splash of puddles forming in every corner. Moisture seeped through their clothes, chilling them to the bone and dampening their spirits.

As they advanced, the town seemed to devour any remaining hope within them. Silence was only interrupted by the occasional howling of the wind, which seemed to whisper sinister warnings to those brave intruders venturing into its territory. Every corner, every dark alley, became a tangible reminder of the fragility of existence and the horrors that lurked in the shadows.

The once vibrant and lively town was now engulfed in darkness and oblivion. It was a place where the whispers of the dead echoed in every corner, where hope had faded away, leaving only a desolate echo of what it used to be.

"It doesn't seem like there's anything here. Maybe it was just a passerby," Airon said as he climbed into the front seat of the Humvee. The children had been moved to the back seats, alongside Victor, who kept an eye on Jimmy.

...

The two Humvees cautiously advanced through the deserted streets of the town, their engines roaring in the midst of the sepulchral silence. Airon was on high alert, his eyes scanning every corner for possible threats. Suddenly, without warning, the deafening sound of gunfire filled the air.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Speed up, increase the velocity!"

"Zz... They're in the corners, don't stop."

The sound of gunfire and the clink of bullets against the protective metal of the Humvee filled the air as the group members ducked for cover. Bild, who was driving this time, pressed down on the accelerator, trying to evade enemy fire and reach a safe place.

Bullets hit the vehicles' armor with force, reverberating inside like a whirlwind of metal. Airon reacted instinctively, calling his team to take cover and return fire. The mounted machine guns on the Humvees responded with a barrage of bullets, attempting to deter their attackers and provide protective cover.

However, before they could escape, a taut metal cable, skillfully placed between two buildings, obstructed their path. The front Humvee collided with the cable, flipping violently and tossing the occupants inside the vehicle.

The strong impact jolted the people inside, and those who were unprepared were thrown forcefully. Airon, who hit his forehead against the glass, lightly touched his forehead and, seeing the blood flow, opened the door with a special button while listening to the gunshots.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Everyone, out of the vehicle! Quickly!" Airon shouted with a slightly affected voice.

The team, dazed and disoriented, struggled to exit the overturned Humvee as the gunfire continued. Airon, with composure, directed his comrades toward cover on the side of the Humvee, while observing the figures attacking them, seeking refuge and assessing the situation to escape this predicament.

"Stay undercover! Return fire and help the wounded!"

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The group members dispersed, seeking defensive positions and returning fire against their attackers. Airon, with determination in his eyes, led the resistance, coordinating the team's movements and looking for an opportunity to counterattack.

"Don't be afraid, we're okay! Let's defend ourselves and get out of this ambush!"

The tension in the air was palpable as Airon and his group faced an invisible enemy in the desolate streets of the town. Every shot, every strategic move, aimed to escape the deadly trap they found themselves in and uncover who was responsible for this sudden attack.

The impact was brutal, and Bild, one of the front passengers, was severely injured. He screamed in pain as his foot became trapped under the overturned vehicle, suffering an obvious fracture.

"Ahhh! My foot is broken!"

"Bild, stay still! We'll get you out of there."

Airon hurried towards Bild, along with the rest of the team. With effort and dizziness, they managed to free his trapped foot and place it in a safer position. However, the fracture was evident, and Bild struggled to bear the pain.

"Come on, hurry up!" Shouted Víctor, who was manning the vehicle's mounted gun, protecting them from most of the attackers.

"Stay calm, Bild! We'll find help as soon as possible."

While Airon and his team struggled to rescue Bild, the gunfire continued around them. Shots echoed through the deserted streets, creating an atmosphere of terror and tension. The occupants of the remaining Humvee, armed with their machine guns, responded to the enemy fire with relentless ferocity.

The cannons of the machine guns spewed fire and lead, sending a hail of bullets towards the unseen attackers. Each burst of gunfire was a desperate attempt to repel their assailants and gain some time to find an escape.

"Hold your position! Return fire and take cover!"

Daryl, who had a large wound on his right shoulder, emerged with some very important bags that were taken to a nearby Humvee. This weaponry was too crucial and couldn't fall into the wrong hands.

"We're going to blow up this Humvee, we can't leave it to the enemy!"

Airon's team clung to their training and survival instincts, remaining calm amidst the chaos. Their bullets found their targets, silencing some of their attackers, but others seemed to emerge endlessly from the darkness.

As the firefight continued, Airon quickly made a decision.

"We have to get out of here! Keep advancing and search for an escape route!"

With that order, the team reorganized, using nearby buildings as cover as they slowly advanced through the narrow streets of the town. The sound of gunfire resonated in their ears, constantly reminding them of the dangerous reality they were facing.

The fight was fierce and desperate, but Airon was unwilling to give up. With determination in his eyes, he led his team through the chaos, desperately seeking a way to escape the deadly ambush and uncover who or what was behind this surprise attack.

The firefight raged on as Airon's team made their way through the streets of the town. With Bild now in the Humvee in a safe place, the group focused on keeping the attackers at bay and ensuring their own survival.

"Grenades!"

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Bullets whistled through the air, exploding against the facades of buildings and shattering windows. Airon and his team responded with precision, taking out several of their enemies with accurate shots. The metallic sound of casings hitting the ground mingled with the agonizing cries of the attackers.

"Stand firm! We won't let them catch us!"

With each onslaught, the armored vehicle became a protective shield for the team. The deafening noise of the machine guns filled the air as bullets were fired in controlled bursts. Airon skillfully maneuvered the steering wheel, avoiding obstacles and zigzagging through the narrow streets to make it difficult for their pursuers to aim.

Smoke and dust filled the air, hindering visibility. Airon relied on his experience and quick reflexes to maintain control of the situation, while his heart pounded in his chest. Every second was crucial, every movement could mean the difference between life and death.

"We have space, let's get out through that opening while the grenades and explosions delay the enemy."

The road stretched out before them, desolate and filled with dangers. George accelerated, feeling the adrenaline rushing through his veins as the Humvee made its way through the darkness of the morning. The sound of gunfire gradually faded as they left their pursuers behind, but the tension in the air remained palpable.

"Let's go, stay alert! We can't let our guard down."

The Humvee's headlights illuminated the path, revealing a lonely and desolate road. The sound of the engine resonated in the nighttime silence, mixed with the survivors' heavy breathing. As they sped forward, the cold wind whipped against their faces, constantly reminding them of the unforgiving reality of the world they lived in.

"Let's divert towards that building, it has an indoor parking lot where we can tend to the wounded..." Paying no attention to the wound on his forehead that grazed his left eyebrow, Airon got out with a silenced weapon to eliminate the walkers.

The pursuit was over, but the sense of danger persisted. Airon remained on high alert, aware that they could encounter new obstacles at any moment.
