Chapter 40: The Graceless Ducks

Carpe had immediately sensed something amiss when the Captain had not yet returned within 15 minutes or so.

They pulled on Hale Hopper's ear and whispered.

"Something's a-brewing. Tell the others to stand on their tippy toes and stay alert."

Hale Hopper's already large green eyes bugged out even more, his freckled nose scrunching up. "What a-brewing?"

"I don't know. My belly can just sense when there's something coming our way ahead. You remember the time we looted the French?"

"Yea?" Hale raised an eyebrow.

"My stomach's been grumblin' that time too."

Hale Hopper: ..... ... ..... ...

"And then it turns out that we meet Petit Louis' great-grandma from the mother's side and she got us distracted before they had us running from their guns."

They nudged their companion repeatedly. "Trust me on this. My belly's never wrong."

"... But we ended up getting our guns from the French thanks to that. So this may be a good thing."
