Chapter 2: Chapter2

#Chapter2

Owen

I nodded, /"that’s true. I’ve never really thought about it but mine does still looked like it did when I was 18./"

/"I like you all to have memories when you come home. If you want to change it, we can,/" she smiled reaching for the comforter. We both pulled it to the top of the bed and Mrs. Kelly threw the pillows on top.

/"No. I like it,/" I smile at her, adjusting one of the pillows.

/"Okay then. Well thank you for helping,/" she walked around the end of the bed and gave me a hug. /"You have always been a bigger help than my other children,/" she pinched my cheek. /"You do know I have always seen you as a son, right?/" I nod my head. Of course, I knew that. She never had treated me any different including getting grounded when we were caught drinking her wine one Saturday night. /"Where is Bree by the way?/"

I smiled down at her. She loved Bree as much as I did. /"She is riding up with my parents. They should be here soon./" Mrs. Kelly nodded her head and stepped back from our hug.

/"There you two are,/" Caleb said from behind us. /"Trying to steal my mom again?/" We all laugh and Mrs. Kelly walks toward him, wrapping him in a hug.

/"There is plenty of love to go around./" She pulls away from him and looked toward me, /"I’m going to finish dinner. Thanks for the help again, Owen,/" with that she left us alone in Abby’s room.

/"Man, it's going to be weird all of us here this weekend huh?/" Caleb commented running his fingers through his hair. He never could just leave it alone. /"It will be like we are all in high school again. All of us in our own rooms. I’m sure mom will break up fights between me and Abby and we can glare at any guys that look at her during the party,/" he chuckled. I laughed a little with him but deep down, I hoped that it wasn’t exactly like high school. Hell, he never knew that I glared at guys that looked at her because I didn't want others looking at what was mine. He thought I did it as a brother figure but it was anything but that.

I didn't say anything and Caleb didn’t either. He just turned around and walked out the door, heading for the stairs. I followed behind after one more look around the room when I spent more time than anyone but Abby and I knew, in my last 2 years of high school. I really hope that things have changed more than this room. I never asked about her. As much as I wanted to know, I knew that asking would look suspicious. I knew the basics like her teaching because Caleb had gone to her high school graduation. I was out of the country for a meeting so I couldn't make it but he sent me video. I also knew she recently moved to New York because Caleb flew to Ohio where she had been teaching at some private school, to drive the moving truck for her. I had offered to pay for movers but she told Caleb that she wasn’t waiting money like that and she wanted a little adventure anyways. I knew she really just didn’t want my money. I didn't blame her.

As my feet hit the last stair, the front door swung open and in stepped, Mr. Kelly. /"Look who I found,/" he announced loudly, stepping to the side. He wore a wide smile which told me it was probably his favorite child. I looked at the women that entered in behind him and felt my body go rigid. I couldn't think of anything other than she looked the same yet more beautiful than she did the last time I saw her. It had been at Caleb and I’s graduation party. A party that I didn't stay any longer than an hour at in order to avoid talking to her and making our situation worse. I spent that hour staring at her like a stalker from the corner of the back yard. The same yard that was only out the back yard. She wasn’t the same girl from back then though. She was a woman now and I knew right then it was going to be a long weekend.

I followed her hand to her long brown hair. Where she tucked one of the lose hairs behind her ear. She always had it long but it was nearly to her elbows now. That was the longest it had been probably since she was in the second grade. Back then, it had reached her butt. At least that was before I accidently got gum stuck in it and her mom had to cut it. She wasn’t happy with me that day or even the next several months. My parents had made me apologize to her but I would have anyway. I made sure to tell her every time I saw her, that she was still beautiful. When it was noticeable that it had grown out, she finally started talking to me again. It was the longest period of time in my life with her not talking to me. Until I left for college of course.

I forced myself to look her in the eyes. Her eyes. They were my favorite thing about her. Caleb was right, this does feel like high school again. Like when I would stare at her from across whatever room we were both in together. Just taking all of her in. Back when I was still trying to build the courage to tell her how I felt about her. Back when no one knew what we did when they weren't around. The next thing I knew, she was smiling. I loved her smile too. Especially when I’m the one to put it there.

Caleb stepped past me and threw his arms around her, picking her up and spinning them both around. I guess that smile wasn’t for me. But I will get one. I promise you that, Abby.
