Chapter 2: The Birth of Terror

As days passed the future became closer and the townspeople had no idea what misfortune was going to befall them without warning. Soon after the boys thirteenth birthday, a certain day came that seemed to be just like every other. It was a peaceful day, nothing out of the ordinary. It was a warm day of about sixty degrees. There was no commotion in the village, only a few groups of adults talking and all the kids going along with the proposal to play a game as they have always done. This boy...oh that's right, you don't know his name yet. I guess I should tell you then. His name was Merlin. Don't get ahead of me with the name, at least give me some time to tell you the story. Anyways, on that nice day, everybody was as happy as they have always been. Everything seemed normal as was expected. However, Merlin's father came home after a few days of hunting and came back with a much smaller haul than normal. This was odd however because it seemed that the animals hid much more often and became ever more vigilant. But, it didn't bring up much discussion due to the fact that they had enough food for many days ahead of them. Merlin shrugged it off and went home as everybody did when the sun went down and he decided to go straight to bed. Later that night, it is unknown what time, Merlin awoke in a cold sweat full of fear and being ever so alert when he heard a sound from across the village. He put his ear to the wall and listened when it became clear to him what it was. There was a woman screaming but as fast as it had come it was gone. Being completely awake and curious at this point he decided to go outside and investigate. Everybody did the same almost as if it was rehearsed. As soon as he got into the cold outdoors he could smell something burning right before a huge flame engulfed one of the houses near where he had heard the scream from. His mother and Father quickly joined him. The Father instructed Merlin to stay with his Mother and ran off towards the fire with some of the other men. They watched in horror as the buildings one by one caught flame and very vividly heard the screams from their friends drowning out all other sounds. After not being able to move for a while stunned by the horrors taking place in front of them, his Mother told him to stay put while she went to find his Father, not knowing what fate lies ahead. He just stood there and stood there for how long he knew not, all he knew was his life was never going to be the same.

Hey anyone reading this. This is my first novel and hopefully not my last. I'm very inexperienced with writing, but I hope you can still enjoy this story. If you can, leave a review so I can see what others think and how I should improve my writing.
