Chapter 1: I am home

"Zane to your left, pass the ball to Simon," Andrew shouted while running towards the defence.

The students of Macmillan High were playing football in the scorching sun, with the rivalling high school 'Arcadia high school'. They held the match at MacMillan high, so all the students were cheering for the players of Macmillan. There were students of Arcadia among them, but they vastly outnumbered the number.

Currently, the score was Macmillan- 1 and Arcadia- 1, and the match had 5 minutes before it went to penalty shooting.

"Who do you think will win?" asked a member of the crowd.

"Why are you asking me, I haven't been here for long, anyway. So, I don't know how good the players are," said another student in reply while adding" Why don't you tell me, you have been studying here for longer than I have".

"Even though you haven't been here for long, you should know our victory is obvious"

"Why do you think we will win, the score is a tie and the players from Arcadia are very good," replied the boy.

"Shouldn't it be obvious, cause we have Zane of course? Do you ever see him losing a match where he is serious? Just look at him, I bet he is going to score soon." The other boy didn't reply after that, cause he knew Zane's personality all too well. They were classmates, after all. He knew Zane hated being on the losing end of something and that he had always got some sort of plan.

Zane passed the ball to Simon and Andrew stayed behind to guard the midfield.

None of the opposing team members noticed Zane going through their defence to take the shot if Simon passed him the ball.

Simon quick on his feet passed two defenders and was about to take the shot when he saw Zane in the enemies' defence. It's a sure goal if he passes the ball to Zane who was deep inside the d-box. There were fewer defenders inside, so there was a high chance of a goal.

" Simon, pass the ball to Zane Quick" shouted Jordan, the midfielder.

'I can take our team to victory on my own, we don't always have to depend on him. He is younger and inexperienced than us. I can do it ' he repeatedly said it to himself trying to make his decision sound justified.

"Simon here," said Zane with urgency clear in his voice.

Simon quickly got past another defender and took a shot, he was sure that would be a goal. But the goalkeeper of the opposing team didn't let the ball even get past the d-box. The goalkeeper came forward and leapt to catch the ball, to which he did. He quickly balanced himself and threw the ball to one of his teammates.

It took some time for the players of MacMillan to get back into position. They thought he would pass it to Zane and he would score for them.

There were fewer defenders as everyone rushed forward, so the opposing players easily got into their defence.

Two players from the opposing team were inside the d-box and one of them made the shot, the goalkeeper lunged at the right side of the bar and stopped it. But the other payer quickly came forward and shot it in the left side, scoring a goal.

Everyone had stunned expressions including all the viewers. For a moment the entire stadium went quiet until the Arcadia supporters cheered as loud as they could. Zane and all the players looked anxious at this point, they had little time left, only a minute at most.

The goalkeeper threw the ball to Zane to at least ensure that they scored a goal, that was the level of faith and confidence everyone had in Zane. And he didn't disappoint, he quickly got past every defender and midfielder of the opposing team with a breeze making them increase their defence. But that didn't help them as he manoeuvred his way around all the defenders. He got into position to take the shot, at this point everyone's heart was pounding fast. Just as he was about to take the shot...*whistle*

The referee blew the whistle announcing the end of the match, with MacMillan high-1 and Arcadia high school-2. "With this, it's the end of the match between MacMillan and Arcadia high schools. Congratulations to Arcadia high for winning the tournament and MacMillan for playing a wonderful game."

*cheers* *screams* *cheers*

The match ended and everyone was leaving, some with cheerful faces and some with sad faces. After the prize-giving ceremony, all the players left for their team's specific locker.

In the MacMillan team's locker room, the players were arguing over how the match played out at the end. Zane was sitting quietly in a corner, thinking about the match.

"Why the hell did you not pass the ball to Zane, Simon. What were you thinking?". Shouted tedd.

"We could have won the god damn match, Simon, for fuck's sake" screamed Andrew at Simon. Everyone was pissed off at Simon, even the students in the audience were pissed at him.

"I fucked up okay, I get it. You don't have to tell me, why don't you look at yourself relying on a junior to win a fucking match. Where's your pride in being a senior student and the captain of the team," retorted Simon.

"Are you serious Simon? You put your shitty ego above the game. We lost because of your petty jealousy," replied Andrew, just as he was about to say something else, Zane interjected.

"Guys, let's calm down. We can talk about this tomorrow. Now I don't know about you but I am exhausted, so I am going home to rest, " said Zane while leaving the locker room. He got out of the locker room and was heading down the hallway.

'I can't believe we lost because of Simon's trivial jealousy, he jeopardised the entire team's effort. I never thought he would harbour jealousy towards me. He never seemed the type to stoop so low.' Just as he was exiting the school, he saw Julia waiting for him.

"Hey Zane, are you alright?" Julia is my childhood friend and my current girlfriend. I have known her since I was 6, the day I moved into Macmillan. She is honestly the only girl who I ever feel comfortable hanging out with. Every other girl I dated just dated me for the sake of good looks, but Julia, she is different. We have been dating for quite some time now, and I still can't seem to get rid of this empty feeling I have in my chest. Don't get me wrong, I love Julia a lot, but there is this feeling of emptiness that just can't seem to getaway.

"I am fine Julia, just a bit upset over what happened. Don't worry I am going to be fine after resting for a while."

Julia fidgeted for a while before finally asking Zane, "I-If you would like you can come over to my house, you can rest and I-I can cook your favourite curry for you". Her face was literally red as a tomato and was steaming profusely.

I couldn't help but think how cute she looked when she was embarrassed. Honestly, the offer sounds quite tempting and I would have taken it if I didn't have work to take care of.

"Thank you Julia, but I can't today. I have some work to do but if you would like I would like to stay over at your place sometime," I said teasing her. That turned her face beet red while she nodded cutely.

I walked my way home while buying some groceries and other necessary items.

"I am home," I say while entering a silent and lonely house. I have been staying here for 4 years now, alone that is. After my mother died of cancer 4 years ago, I stayed here. I didn't want to leave this place that holds so much of our memories. I never saw my father nor ever heard from him. My mother also never mentioned or talked about him when I asked. So I tried not to bring his topic up.

I cleaned myself up and cooked some curry for lunch and dinner. I don't have much at home as I live alone. I have a mini-fridge, a washing machine. I don't really watch TV so I just sold our one. It fetched a good price; I bought an AC with it. Although this house is just one floored and looks small from the outside, it is quite spacious. There are two bedrooms, one dining a living room, a kitchen and one washroom. I think this house is more than enough for me.

I quickly finish my tasks and get a shower to set out to work. I do a part-time job at a restaurant as a server. It doesn't pay a lot, but it's enough for me to get by.

I was heading home after finishing work, then I suddenly felt it again. I could feel the space being spanned to open a portal. I hurried to check the reason behind the opening of the portal. The portal was still open and I could see clearly that it was closing, albeit slowly. 'I wonder what's on the other side of the portal,' thought Zane. He always wanted to see the other end of the portal but always thought better of it, as it could be dangerous.

Zane was an average kid, just like any other kid. He had good looks, friendly character and everyone loved him. He would seem normal to any ordinary people if not for the fact that he could use magic. He could use magic for as long as he could remember. He didn't have memories past 5 years because of an accident, at least that what his mother Clara told him. So, he could magic since he was 5 and loved using magic. But stopped using it when his mother asked, Zane loved his mother a lot. Her death took a huge toll on her. It took him a few months to get back to normal.

A sudden ruffling sound brought him out of his thoughts. He looked behind and saw mist surrounding the forest. Suddenly, the forest seemed to be quieter than usual. Only the sound of stealthy but heavy footsteps could be heard. The sound came to an abrupt stop as it came close to him.

"Who's there. Show yourself," asked Zane with fear distinct in his voice.

A man in black clothes with gold-covered patches with a golden skull looking musk came out of the mist. The golden mask was from the mouth to the top of his nose, so his upper face clearly was visible.

"Hello there, kid, " said the man with power radiating from his voice.
